Hey hey PV Peeps! *QUESTION:* What are your experiences with each of the big brands? Which are you rocking in your shoot day kit and why? (Or which do you WANT to pack in there one day 😉 ) Keen to hear if you have a different perspective or if you agree with my take on it! We always get some awesome suggestions & insights down here - and yours may help someone else make their decision 👊🏻💯
I have been watching a ton of your videos I have learned a lot about cameras lights and video in general Will the Nikon d3300, canon SL 1, Nikon d3400, or canon t6 work for youtube videos like this ua-cam.com/video/AgfK9NdvYbk/v-deo.html I love your videos and I rlly want advice from the pros please help me!!❤
I use Panasonic because you can record up to 4k 30fps at UNDER $500! The camera I'm talking about is the Panasonic G7 14-42mm lens and its SO worth it! (I use the G85 cause it has IBIS)
Thanks for the video but there are a few glaring mistakes when it comes to Nikon. 1st, Nikon has a MASSIVE range of lenses. In fact, they are renowned in the photography world for being able to put a lot of manual lenses from the 70's and 80s straight on to modern bodies without hassles (if you focus manually). This is unlike Canon who have changed their mounting systems quite a few times, meaning more adapters. Secondly, Nikon are better than Canon when it comes to dynamic range. Again, they are well known for trouncing Canon in this area. When it comes to Canon and Panasonic vs Sony, you should mention that the latter two have a bigger range of cameras with fully articulating screens. Much better for filming yourself vlog-style or shooting above your head like you may do in a crowd in a concert or just want to film something from a different angle. I'm a fan of Sony but it frustrates me they only do the tilting lcds for most of their serious cameras.
I know nothing of video, but I am surprised about Nikon being not that good in low light; in photography environments I was always told they were excellent.
All my stuff is Panasonic. I discovered not to use continuous focus and I've been fine since. Had Sony a6500 but it over heated so I returned it and got 2 panasonics. One gx8 and a g7. More than happy. (You may recall me as Chilupian, this is my new tech channel which I haven't uploaded to yet. When I do a lot of what I have put to it will be from all the knowledge you've imparted us! ) 😊
I shoot Nikon. I went with Nikon in the beginning because of name recognition. I stayed with it because of my investment in glass. I'm satisfied with my D7500 but if I had to start over... I'd shoot Panasonic.
My Nikon D750 with Sigma Art 35MM is an awesome combo for video. It shoots great in low light and I can shoot 60fps. Also I will mention I can see the audio levels while recording. Recently the price has been cut about $500 CDN from when I bought about a year ago. I good cheaper option especially if you already have Nikon glass.
I don't necessarily agree with some of the stuff he's saying. Nikon are usually not the cheaper camera. Usually they're more expensive especially when compared straight across to the competition. Also the video options are actually great and I've had mine for 2 years and still not used everything I could be using. The lenses options are also limitless. I chose Nikon for not only the image quality and overwhelming sharpness when compared straight across brand lines but also the number of lenses- both Nikon and other brands- that were offered when compared to other camera's having way less. Just not sure all this info is accurate.
I have a Nikon D3500 and I would say, go for Nikon, Im not a die hard Nikon fan or something, I know sony and canon are way better for video but Nikon is way more budget friendly. You can get great lenses starting from 200$, Nikon has a lot of cheap and really good lenses The only real downside for me is, the autofocus for video is not good. But you can always manual focus or keep distance
ok yup...I tuned out the moment you said Nikon had poor low light. That alone told me you have never actually used a Nikon. You can go as far back as the old Nikon D5500s and get great low light. The new ones are so much better.
didn't agree ..nikon lowlight is doing well but other brand will do much better ..so its depends how much you want the quality to turn out ..and also how you use it either commercial or recreational play a part
Nikon video features are bad, but for still photography , i think nikon is the best so far, the DOF are amazing. And nikon camera's have great built quality, most wildlife photographer use nikon
Hey Justin, thanks for the info, great video. I have experience with Canon and Sony. What you said is so true. I love Canon because of the great colors and ease of use, but I have to use Sony because of $$$. I shoot most of my videos at 120fps in 1080, and Sony provides that feature in its cameras at a much lower cost (I have RX10 and a6300) than Canon does. But, Sony colors are not even close to Canon's. Thanks again my friend.
some of my favourite videographers use the 1dx mark ii but you just can't beat the features of the gh5! I'm trying to convince myself to buy a 1dx mark ii for video but i can't justify the price!
best CAMERA IS THE CANON 1DX MARK 2, IN MY OPINION, I GOT BOTH 5D MARK 4 AND 1DX MARK 2 AND IF MONEY IS NOT THE SUBJECT BUT QUALITY IS A DEFINITIVE CANON 1DX MARK 2!!
Thanks for this. Just a quick note. It is beginning to drive me crazy when I hear the explanation of depth of field being "That blurry background look". Depth of field actually refers to the part of the image that is in focus *in addition* to the subject that has been deliberately focused on. This means that, with a shallow depth of field, with the camera focused on a subject (for example) 15 feet away, anything in the background or the foreground would be out of focus, when using cameras in which the sensor is parallel to the lens. With some view cameras, however, which can have the plane on which the sensor is mounted, varied (set at an angle) from the plane that the lens is in, the depth of field can be set to cut across the image at an angle. I realize that you, and others, may be using the 'blurry background' explanation as a kind of 'shorthand' to give people an idea of what a shallow depth of field does visually, but you end up confusing the issue by limiting the idea to describing only the background.
Firstly I think you should differentiate between DSLRS and mirrorless. I have used several camera systems and find each has its own color science. To say that one is better or one is inferior means one does not understand the leaps of processing in color science. I get excellent results on different lenses from different camera systems because after learning the cameras, lenses, kinds of white balance, exposure possibilities etc. If these are not configured properly colors will not be in synch. Further color harmonies are subjective. DSLR design grew out of the film slr, hence both canon and nikon have a huge lens array, Canon has also developed a mirrorless aps-c system which is quite reasonably priced but does not give the better hybrid features that Sony gives. Panasonic has had a long development in camcorders and their mirrorless systems draw from it - hence they are specialized mainly for video. The main choice in going in for a new system is sensor size, then dslr or mirrorless. The third aspect is still/hybrid/video, then lens selection both native and adaptability and lastly other features like ibis etc.
This is a good video. I would add that Panasonic has bad autofocus - better than nikon though. ISO is limited. Native mics for Panasonic are very good. Canon primes on aps-c bodies are not that good at short range and the Sigma 18-35 is noisy when autofocusing - you have to use a lav mic. Sony primes focus silently - much less hassle. Getting used to the Sony menus although not as easy as Canon, are no harder to navigate than Panasonic and takes little time to get used to. Although older canons like t6 and t5i have autofocus it does not work with primes like the dpaf that is in their new range.
Yes I can imagine you would have loads more to say! Your coverage of the Panasonic app was really worth putting in - I've not seen it done in a video as well as this. But can imagine you had to cut that down too!
Great video. I like the way you talk and explain things. And what other people oftenly don't notice or attache a value to is the structure. A lot of youtube videos aren't really good structured, but yours. Hope to see more :)
In the end you don't talk about the Fuji cameras, even though you mentioned them at the beginning of the video. What do you think about Fuji ? And Perhaps the X-H1 model ?
I am very excited and impressed with the amount of information you have give out...I have used and loved canon cameras and lenses for the last 20 years for still photography. I have used Panasonic cameras for Videos. In the Last 4 years I git involve in using DSLR to shot Videos. I am happy with my Cannon. I am now at cross road after watching this UA-cam video. I will take you advise... Thanks see more of your video
first time i go with canon for run n gun shoot ,, i meet a big problem because i just have a canon camera with a lens kit, video very noisy,, and even i try a nikon camera with lens kit , then i saw the result,, omg , that was very amazing video, very sharp and good color, but canon have smart autofocus , just my opinion
Wow so much content in such a short video. As someone with good canon glass and 4 Canon Cameras the info is spot on. I'd add think about you will use your camera for above all else. I found the info on the other brand really valuable.
Thanks mate! Investing in great glass is a good option, and getting Canon glass will give you a heap of flexibility in camera upgrades in the future. 😀👍
Another great video. I own a Canon T5i and love it but I was I wish it had the Wi-Fi control. That is an amazing feature. You don't need anyone to help you and can save money.
Don't buy Metabones speedboosters, they are too expensive! Viltrox makes great speedboosters that cost 1/3 the price of a Metabones. The Viltrox EF-M2 (Canon EF to Micro 4/3) has no apparent difference in quality or reliability and you can buy 3-4 Viltrox speedboosters (for multiple camera mounts) for the price of one Metabones. Comparing the two, some users have found that Metabones speedboosters don't mount well on the camera, and result in a bit of play...way more play than their Viltrox counterpart!!!
TL;DW - Canon and Nikon are the most famous and revered prosumer brands for still photography. They video capture is scarce and very limited. Sony is the best brand of Full Frame cameras capable of great video capture, but they suffer from many technical problems which have been known for years. Panasonic is considered the most advanced brand nowadays for video capture. Their GH5 and GH5S are the best (while cheapest) cameras you can buy today that will capture impeccable 4K 10-bit video (VFR and lots of other features) and can be compared to the results of RED and ARRI Alexa cameras. Most image quality and dynamic range tests have shown that the best cameras for still photography are the less known ones. Fuji, Pentax, Leica, Hasselblad and so on are on the forefront of photo technology and are surprising photographers worldwide. The professional models are very expensive though.
I know it's an old video, but is it worth upgrading from Panasonic TZ40 to Canon 70d. The latter is a DSLR but is a lot more to carry around. Is the increase in quality enough to make it really worth it?
Hey thanks Justin. A really good general round up that someone of my level (novice) can comprehend. I have a question. You use a canon lens because it gives you the Canon autofocus capabilities. Is any of the autofocus controlled by the camera itself or is it all done by the lens?
Thanks Alex! The amazing Canon autofocus only works on the canon cameras themselves. For me, using Canon lenses on my Panasonic I'm still stuck with Panasonic (actually a bit worse as it's through an adaptor) autofocus. For these videos though I just use manual focus and set it using my tablet controlling the camera 👍
You stated that Nikon cameras are poor in low light?!? Have you used the Nikon D7100/D7200 or the D500? All of those cameras are beast in low light. As for the selection of lens that you mention are limited, I guess Nikon is prevalent in your country. Thanks for your opinion.
This video was clearly a generalization of the brands as a whole, there are definitely exceptions to everything mentioned for each brand, but as a whole, these are my thoughts 😀
Well about low light, I really agree with Hoop, Nikons are beast... I owned D7000, and going throug D7200, D500, D850, .... low light seems to be a flagship for Nikon.... About lenses, I feel like this: 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 what else do you need (if you don't got for wildlife shooting). Any brand of cameras nowaday (sony, canon, nikon, Panasonic, leica,...) got all that primes lenses, and fast zoom. I don't think the "more lenses choice in Canon" continue do aply in 2018 (and you got all the 3rd party lenses as Sigma, Tamron....) - For video, I agree, I don't think Nikon is best, well neither is canon... I would go Sony or Panasonic mirrorless.
Generalization? You gave next to no PROs for Nikon, which, is one of the LEADING camera systems out there. It's ridiculous. You made them sound like trash, shame on you.
This is a great Video Justin..Im looking for a good camera for recording music videos/ commercials... and i was leaning towards Lumix vs Sony... But I also want to record at night and I really want the faded out background look.. and now i'm leaning more towards the Sony again. Your explanation broke it down and I hope the sony is worth the money.. Im going for either the A7I or A7II. Currently have the sony a5100, and shoot sometimes with the nikon d5500... pretty good cameras.
Great video! I think Nikon is the best... but that because I've only used Nikons! Got my first Nikon for photos (D5000) in 2010 and now on my third (D5600) which has been very useful for my vlogs which I only started a month ago.
Hi Justin, this is a sort of related question, maybe an idea for a video. I want to make some videos and I'm wondering if I just upgrade my phone to maybe a Huawei P10 (meant to have a good camera) or am I better to spend the money on a DSLR?
This video was very informative. I have past experience with Sony, Cannon, & Panasonic camcorders, and for DSLR video it sounds like the models you profiled continue the same historical qualities of all these brands camcorders & pro video equipment. Sony invented small video, Panasonic followed, and all three were camera of choice in making indie films in the 90s. I agree with you on Nikon, there great for photographers, but video not so much. My vote is for Canon. Every Canon camera I own from low end to higher priced ones, has great video, color, depth of field for cinematic look. Most anything from Canon that has a video option does great video and sound.
Yes Nikon Cameras Especially Those Professional Ones both in Full frame and Apsc eg D500 has a good low light performance with high ISO performance, Shoots 4k at 30fps and records it for 29.9mins and 144 video bitrate with a rich colour. So he's just talking trash about Nikon
Hello Justin, please let me know if Canon EOS 700D DSLR Camera and 18-55mm & 75-300mm III Lenses is worth to pay £500 as I want to use it for my cooking channel. Thank you
Hi, great info and presentation. I love the simplicity of your videos. Did the Panasonic wifi allow you to turn on and off the video recording? Thanks!
Awesome job!!! very useful review!!! canon 70D and 80D have really cool color and autofocus but I don't know why 80D don't have 4k. Very disappointing... I want to start a youtube channel but I don't know what camera buy...
This is the first question I've ever posted on UA-cam, so hope you can give me some advice. May I know if it's still worth investing in DSLRs as there are a lot of amazing mirrorless cameras to choose from in 2018? I have owned several compact cameras before but usually, focus on withstanding weather conditions, but as I'm growing up and getting more interested in photography, I wanted to take pictures with much better quality for picnic/travels/vlogs, so I'm placing emphasis on both vid performance and pictures (wildlife, scenery, portraits & sports event). I have an HTC RE for wide angle vlogs (not very good image stabilisation) and an iPhone 8+ which can act like a decent point-and-shoot for daily pics but I have been doing a lot of research and is deciding between Canon G7x Mark ii, Canon T7i/800D or Canon 77D. I never own a DSLR so it will be a first for me if I get one of those. These three cameras are the ones that seems to suit me but I'm still in a dilemma. What do you recommend?
hi there, I am planning to make some blogging video mostly out on a sunny day. Should i go a Camcorder ( like Sony FDR-AX700 which has a 1-inch sensor ) or a mirrorless camera ( like Sony A6400 which can shoot for more than 29 mins )? Which one will produce stunning video footage? Please note that i am not trying to become a professional videographer but i want to make some blogging video with stunning image quality! Your kind advice will greatly be appreciated . Thanks heaps
Amazing review!! I WAS thinking of getting a Canon thanks to the amazing autofocus but I didn't know they also had the recording limit like Nikon. I may end up going Panasonic, thanks to the removal of the recording limit :)
Great Video information. I personally have been using a Canon T3i for the past few years and am either thinking of upgrading to better lenses that will be better for low light situations , say 2.0-2.8 F/ in@ 1080/30 ( but would perfer 1080/60 with a lens that would be able to get a 2.0 F/. The Panasonic Lumix GH4 may be something that would be of interest, but I'm not sure at this point.
If you have the opportunity to test a few out at a local camera shop that'd be the best way to see what works best for you. Most of them these days will let you have some time with the cameras before purchasing.
Very informative video! I am interested in the Panasonic Lumix because they don't have a recording limit for video... However, I live in Germany and the model numbers are different over here. Is there an easy way to roughly translate the model numbers?
trying to decide whether to go for the GH5 or G85 or something else altogether. coming from Canon D550 and wanting to upgrade to 4K.... tips welcome as it is a difficult choice! Love the colours of Canon but they don’t do 4K....
Hi Justin, great video again, I am right now in a bit of hurry for some short film shootings. being more of a script writer, i decided to direct a couple of
Excellent, informative video! I'm an artist who will be doing lots of long form content, with the camera in hard-to-reach places. Panasonic sounds like a great choice. Do you have any knowledge or resources on how they would stack up for still and stop-motion photography?
Justin am new to video editing and I want to buy a camera, and i think Panasonic are the best..but i can only afford to buy lumix gf5 for now..will it be helpful or i should save more money and buy a new brand..please advise me for your experiance
I haven't personally used that model but it's got some great reviews. If you have the opportunity to test it out before you buy to see how easy it is to use and if you're happy with the quality and workflow that would be a good idea. 👍
I would say any lower priced or used DSLR or even Power Zoom cameras from Canon. Canon has great video and sound period. You can get older Canon DSLRs on EBay for 100-200 Dollar range. Also to start out with a new camera at that price, buy a small Canon power zoom like the Canon SX170 is, or other similar Canon for 99 dollars at a Black Friday or closeout sale...
I have a Nikon D90 , it’s my moms. Con: it doesn’t have a mic port. And I have to get an extra piece that plugs into my cameras cord so that I can use it with my tablet as a mirror to see what I’m doing. So super annoying! I’m 17 so getting a new camera is no where in my budget. But I want to get a mirror camera, something I can use for vlogging as well. But I don’t know which camera is he best one to get.
Any thoughts about doing a review on the best camcorder for video? I know DSLR's are all the rage but I I would have thought camcorders, being made for video, would be worth exploring too - or are they no longer relevant?

Should I get the Canon 80D or Nikon D7500? Which is better for video?
nah, if you ever used a sony, you know the af is much superior to anything in this world,

You are the first camera reviewer claiming that Nikon is bad in low light situations and has very limited range of lenses. And cheap as well LOL.
actually , nikon cameras with same category more bit expensive than canon cameras,, hahaha LOL,, i have booth of nikon and canon
agreed
yeah, he probably know nothing about nikon.
i have a nikon d7200 camera ,, thats a fantastic in lowlight,
@USA ASMR yes, exactly. People are dumb man.
Once I heard your tone of voice when speaking about panasonic cameras I knew I could predict which brand you use lol. I have a GH5 and I love it btw
I do currently use Panasonic. .yes :) But I also own and use other brands too
Bruh you just did a video that solved the meaning of life. Forever grateful!
haha thanks Michael!
Just bought a Panasonic Lumix G7 for my first photo/video camera!
Nice! Good luck with the filming!
I knew I could trust Panisonic their just great
👍

Thanks Marcelo! You should be able to use a USB cable to control and monitor your Canon camera to achieve a similar result.

Thank you for your review I always look to you for everything.
Aww thanks Living Randomly!
Muchas gracias Justin!!! Muy útiles tus consejos como siempre. Un gran abrazo desde Argentina.
Thanks Mario!
I know it's an old video, but is it worth upgrading from Panasonic TZ40 to Canon 70d. The latter is a DSLR but is a lot more to carry around. Is the increase in quality enough to make it really worth it?
I'm looking to buy a DSLR this video really helped me thanks 👍🏻
Glad the video helped you out! Keep us posted on what you end up with 😀
One day you'll reach A million subs trust me, great videos continue the grind. Ps. I'm here before you blows up.
haha thanks for the support John!
For these videos though I just use manual focus and set it using my tablet controlling the camera 👍
really well made and easy to watch video, great job man
Thanks Retrograde!
Nikon are good
Generalization? You gave next to no PROs for Nikon, which, is one of the LEADING camera systems out there. It's ridiculous. You made them sound like trash, shame on you.
I once asked a Japanese lady I know how to pronounce Nikon. It's not exactly as you do, but very close. Certainly nothing like Niekon.
Which one is better for music videos?
Lots of useful information, I'm currently using a Panasonic compact camera...might need to check out the GH4 for an upgrade
Nice! Also check to see if your existing camera has wifi control 👍
Hello Justin, I have a question. I looked up Panasonic GH4. My question is....Will the Panasonic G7 perform like the GH4?
Well made video. Lots of information. Thanks!
The best Channel ever
+black monster thanks mate 😃👍
Hhahaa good joke
Nikon has also slightly bigger Megapixels than Canon.
Which camera is best in photography and video recording in lowest price
Great video! I think Nikon is the best... but that because I've only used Nikons! Got my first Nikon for photos (D5000) in 2010 and now on my third (D5600) which has been very useful for my vlogs which I only started a month ago.
Awesome! That's a fair reason to stay with Nikon 😀 All the best with your vlogs!
LemonHeadGames not with the D5600. The D5300 I had previously had that issue
Nikon is for wusses, real men shoot Canon.
Tekin Sahan you just fanboy and know nothing about camera then
Hi Justin, this is a sort of related question, maybe an idea for a video.
Thanks Bob! Appreciate the input 😀 Congrats on the growth of your channel!!
Nikon sensors are little bit bigger than Canon.
G7 or T6i for video/short films? What if I can only afford a T5i?
overall canon is my favorite, however my favorite camera all time is a panasonic
Thanks!
Thanks Bike Teacher! Yep, all the important camera controls can be done through the app over wifi (including start and stop recording) 👍
always loved canon watched this considering changing to sony but don’t think i will now think i’m gunna get the 7d mkii for video
Thanks heaps
great video bro . this video is really helpful .
Thanks +ck bhall 👍😀
Hi Justin, very informative video for someone like me who wants to start on this filming path. :-)
Thanks mate!
Love your analysis, Justin! 👍👍
Thanks Shubham Dalvi 👍
Amazing review!! I WAS thinking of getting a Canon thanks to the amazing autofocus but I didn't know they also had the recording limit like Nikon. I may end up going Panasonic, thanks to the removal of the recording limit :)
Thanks! Yes I love my Panasonic GH5, it works well for our videos 👍
THANKS MYAAN .......keep up the gud work....
No problem!
Thank you for the video, very informative.
No problem! So awesome to hear it! 😀
thanks, great blog, very important info for me!
Thanks Frank!😃
Is there an easy way to roughly translate the model numbers?
savin lives out here .Thank you!
Hey Justin, does the G85 come with that amazing ipad app you are using or is that only available with the GH4/5? than,s
I'm 99% sure it works on the G85 too
Justin Brown - Primal Video thank you!
trying to decide whether to go for the GH5 or G85 or something else altogether. coming from Canon D550 and wanting to upgrade to 4K.... tips welcome as it is a difficult choice! Love the colours of Canon but they don’t do 4K....
Hey Justin, great video! What lens you use on this video, when you sit and talk? (I see three lenses in your equipment list).
The main one I use now is the Sigma 18-35mm EF Mount - I use it with a MetaBones SpeedBooster adaptor for the Panasonic GH5
Thanks, very interesting, hope you don't mind I shared on Reddit
Thanks +Adventures in Fabrication! Appreciate the share 👊🏻💯
Hi Justin, great video again, I am right now in a bit of hurry for some short film shootings. being more of a script writer, i decided to direct a couple of
Have you reviewed the best lenses to shoot video? For DSLR?
Check out Chris Winter or Think Media TV's channels for lens reviews and comparisons 😃
What software are u using? Great content by the way
We use a mix of Premiere and FCPX
Excellent, informative video! I'm an artist who will be doing lots of long form content, with the camera in hard-to-reach places. Panasonic sounds like a great choice. Do you have any knowledge or resources on how they would stack up for still and stop-motion photography?
Wow! Fantastic video
thanks justin
Can you tell me which is the best canon camera at low budget for new youtubers.
Look at the Canon 1200D
Amair Khan HT Canon Rebel SL2/200D, recently released, might fit your requirements.
+Amair Khan HT really comes down to your budget. For a starting point check out the cameras we linked in the description to see if one suits 👍
Justin Brown - Primal Video thanks
But I don’t know which camera is he best one to get.
very honest and true review
😊
Any thoughts about doing a review on the best camcorder for video? I know DSLR's are all the rage but I I would have thought camcorders, being made for video, would be worth exploring too - or are they no longer relevant?
Nikon poor in lowlight and limited amount of leses? Excuse me what?
