Wonderful wonderful performance of this great sonata. The fourth movement was played with an incredible mix of lyricisim and ferocity. Thanks very much.

I had no idea the 4th movement had so much life and passion in it and I am stunned. Thanks to Radu I have a better idea of what Beethoven was trying to get at with that movement.

Очень эмоционально играет этот пианист, с тонким вкусом. Его туше такое выразительное , а звучание рояля так ласкает слух! Интерпретация этой сонаты просто восхитительна! 🙏❤️Спасибо.

Maybe Beethoven at his most poetic and profound. To me it is about a spiritual and/or cultural transcendence of the natural cycle of physical-biological birth and death, transcendence of mere nature, rebirth through culture and the metaphysical, as if through art we overcome the limitations and short life of the physical realm and connect to eternity.

It’s an amazing sonata, but compared to the last 3 nowhere near his most transcendent and profound.

@@joshyman221 I’ve thought about this a lot. I’m not saying I have an especially authoritative opinion, but I know the last three are generally considered to be very spiritually profound, the profoundest of LVB’s 32. My limited personal opinion on this, however, is that however counter-intuitive this is, that op. 28 surpasses op. 109, 110, and 111 in this regard. Beethoven was older, was approaching his personal final stages of life, along with the inward reflection, introspection this entails, as he wrote op.109-111, but I suspect his sharpest, most penetrating philosophical insight may have peaked with op. 28, which seems to me the purest and noblest statement of his general outlook on music in relation to the human condition. I believe op.109-111 have different kinds of strengths, and op.111 I think may be marred by mental illness and depression, especially the 1st movement’s “beat you over the head” (i.e.m 'fate knowing on the door" like in the 5th Symphony) approach to profundity. I tend to be very ambivalent about op.111, including the way Beethoven appears to be trying to illustrate something about his declining hearing and turning inward away from physical sound toward something more spiritual. In the end I have doubts whether that works or not in op.111. I often vacillate in my feelings about the final 3. But I absolutely love the Hammerklavier, and certainly love all of the Sonatas from op. 31 until op.106. I don’t “not love” op. 109-111; it’s just that I have certain mixed feelings about them.

Everyone plays the predecessor of no. 15, the "Moonlight." The "Pastorale" is more interesting, imo, for lots of reasons. One key reason is that there are four movements rather than three, meaning more music, thus, much greater contrast from one movement to the next, and so on.

    • @pianoplaynight

According to this logic, op 111 is boring cause it only has two movements.
However I agree that this is really underrated compared to overplayed Moonlight. Though both are beautiful!

Очень хотелось бы послушать в исполнении Раду Лупу 14--ю Сонату Бетховена. Что-то она мне нигде не попадалась. Буду очень благодарен.
