Replacing wiper blades on our Hyundai Ioniq Electric (throwing away new Bosch Aerotwin)

  • In this video, I'm replacing the wiper blades on our 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric. This had Bosch AeroTwin wipers which were fitted by the original owner only a matter of weeks ago. These juddered, particularly on the longer driver's side wiper and the mountings also had too much play in them.
    I much prefer a hybrid wiper blade to the Bosch flat blade design. So in this video I fit some new Heyner hybrid wiper blades which are almost identical to the original OEM wipers, but about half the cost.
    The Ioniq has a 26" (650mm) blade on the driver's side and a 18" (450mm) on the passenger side and uses the standard hook type mounting.
    Heyner Hybrid 26/18" only £20.72 on Amazon amzn.to/3O80V0z
    (even though these are for a Jeep, they are the correct set for the Hyundai Ioniq)
    or direct from Heyner heynershop.co.uk/

      Aerotwin's or any flat blade style wipers aren't ideal when over about 20". Hybrid wipers are far superior on modern cars with long wiper blades.

    Huge thanks for this video Matt. As someone not very handy with cars I managed to change these myself today - just following along with your instructions. I bought the same blades too. Although mine didn't come with the protective red plastic on them. They look and behave just like new though. Many thanks again mate.

    Part of the issue seems to be that the wiper arms are designed for the old style wipers. So it's a retrofit adaptor to fit the flat blade bosch.
    With arms designed for the flat blades they have a sturdy pin that the wiper slides onto and pivots on. You literally lift the arm and pivot the wiper to change it in seconds and it gives a really sturdy fixing helping to elimintate the flop that allows the judder.
    I find the bosch flat wipers work better and last twice as long (at least) as the old style blades.
    Admittedly the longer ones may be more prone to judder but if there is play where they attach then any blade will perform badly.
    If the screen has any contamination on it that will also make things worse (wash and wax for example).
    There really is nothing wrong with the bosch wipers in most applications but in this specific application with a long blade on a retrofit adaptor, they perform poorly.

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  Рік тому

      Yes, you're spot on.
      But I do find that flat wipers when longer (say 20+ inches) do have a tendency to judder easier than a hybrid wiper. But you're right, the mounting type is key. With the hook type arms being the most common, the Bosch Aerotwins are not the best.

  • @Hanoitami
    @Hanoitami Місяць тому

    Bosch seems to be decent because of the nano layer that guarantees smooth wiping. Many wipers do indeed loose that layer a lot faster than the Bosch. Especially when there is a lot of dirt on the windshield, or when often visiting the carwash.

    I used to find the mechanism too bulky on the Bosch which defeated the purpose of it somewhat. I've followed your suggestion and went for the Heyner wipers for my Toyota Auris (now the wipers are hybrid as well as the traction). Much lower profile install and the juddering hasn't reappeared after 3 months of use. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Ordered the set you linked from Amazon - drivers side fine but the passenger (short) one has to be fitted with the 'aero' the other way round. The cover has cut-outs for the ridge and to latch would be arse-about-face if it's fitted that way.

    i find it strange that they claim its combining the blade style with the conventional when all its doing is putting an aero cover on the conventional and taking nothing from the blade style

    • @stephenwakeman3074
      @stephenwakeman3074 Місяць тому

      The only benefits to the flat blade style is that it's more aerodynamic than an open frame design and not vulnerable to being clogged by ice during winter. By having an aero cover over a conventional design, it makes it look better (subjective), more aerodynamic and protected from ice and debris (objective).

The supplier then sent me Michelin & there was no hood to keep the blades on, so now they’re going back too & I’ve bought the Vipa brand which look similar to yours. I’ll be fitting them tomorrow but if they’re no good I’ll go with your recommendation. £20 vs £33.50 lets see whats best!
