Spain is my favorite Western Europe faction. You don't really get a lot of heavy infantry and spears in the beginning, but late in the game, you do get powerful swordsmen and gunpowder units up the wazoo, plus they have super-fast, anti-armor javelineers.
@gamezonic I'm Latin american and that it's not really fair; Spain didn't hold any proffesional army in america (except for 300 men of the talavera company in the Bio-Bio Frontier) only loyal militias, poorly trained and equipped, much the same as the independist forces. The 1814-1816 conflict was mostly a civil war between those who wanted a commonwealth-like system and those who wanted that the administration keep being same as always.
@gamezonic The "restauration process" forced those who wanted the commonwealth to fight for a full independence; and the clumsy (a delicate way to say blind and stupid) politics of the vindication tribunals, turn many people loyal to spain, to join the independist forces. There were people who wanted the independece in the first place; but the vast uncultured majority, didn't care for it, as it was just a abstract concept. The restauration proces upsetted them because it hurt them phisically

@maniacmoviemaker wrong, at the 15th century, France is the more powerfull. Even when France wanted to take Naples, Spain decide to do nothing because they dint want to enter in war against them.
@TalonMercenary Nop, the fact that the Spain Empire could not take interest whit the gold and other ressources. Make the tresurary unable to grow. The admistration of Spain during the 15th century, oblige them I colonize the Americas in search of Gold, to pay the army.
@maniacmoviemaker portugal got conquistadors they have everything that spain have but better elite units like aventorus wich are the best pikemen in the game
@vegm1992 realy? Viva espana? well why did they surrender to almost all invasions during the war where the natives beat the crap out of the spanish. They yelled "Viva mexico!" and they ran in large army. The spanish surrendered in most of those fights. Oh i guess when the natives used guns now they win!
but the turks are still better. the varangian guards cannot match the janissary musketeers from afar, or the janissary heavy infantry from hand-to-hand combat. and the byzantine empire doesn't have monster bombards like turks do.

it has all the factions (except aztecs, mongols, timurids and papal states), but you have to unlock most of them vanquishing them in the campaign mode
@maniacmoviemaker I agree, but i find that most the European countries were neer even around 1600 but Spain had a slight edge.
You can unlock all the files just go into the game code and change some stuff and you can play as all of them
