This is my favorite Elvis song everything is just the right feeling from the string bass thumping the tickle in piano to the Jordanaires I believe singing background there’s such a sadness in this song you feel the pain in Elvis‘s voice and then the remarkable joy I could put this song on repeat and listen to it over and over I never get tired of it because “I memorize every line!”and let’s not forget the Organ

A side note: The piano section here is played by Floyd Kramer, in his original, "slip note", style. I think it adds a certain "tenderness", maybe. Love this song...great reaction.

Patrick, I think this maybe David Briggs on piano. According to A Life In Music (Ernest Jorgensen) “ “The first song he wanted to do was ‘Love Letters,’ which is all piano,” Briggs recalls. “So I had to play on it. I had just met him, and five minutes later I was sitting on a stool beside him at the piano.”

Elvis has the most beautiful ballad voice. Others have sung this song but no one can equal Elvis' version. You are right about his soft voice., singing with skill and control. Yes, it is poetic. Elvis shows his romantic side. I had the original 45 single record with picture sleeve. Nice reaction.

I had a strange thing happen on a cross country trip. We stopped off in Memphis for the night and in the morning swung by the Graceland Mansion neighborhood for a look. Suddenly there was this notable frenzied activity and I found out that morning was the release of the first Elvis postage stamps. Not sure why they needed to be right there, but we were suddenly mashed up with dozens of the most devoted fans wanting those stamps ! The Elvis store which sold every Elvis thing under the sun was a crazy place to be that morning !

This is the earlier version, Elvis sang this with much more of a falsetto type voice. When Elvis' re-recorded this in the 1970's - he deepens up the tone and adds a little bit of a different emotion in the song. They are both very good - I personally prefer the 1970's studio version :-).

He may be deceased, but The King lives on in spirit. This song is perfectly relatable for being away from loved ones, and keeping in touch through "love letters", and let's not forget about the backing vocals by The Jordanaires. The musicians on this song are also good. According to the AFM session logs, the lineup for this song consists of Scotty Moore on electric guitar, Chip Young on acoustic guitar, Floyd Cramer on piano, David Briggs on organ, Bob Moore on bass, DJ Fontana on drums, Buddy Harman on percussion, Boots Randolph and Rufus Long on saxophone, and Pete Drake on pedal steel guitar.

Dani: Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I notice your fan club of admirers is now 15,000. One way to get your head around how many people are watching your lovely songs and reactions is to imagine Elvis during the “Elvis on Tour” 1972 movie. The April tour was 15 cities, usually one night stands. Four of the cities were filmed and edited to create the movie. Each one of those auditoriums sat about 15,000 people. Try to imagine that you are the person the 15,000 came to see. In actuality, they have. You should feel quite proud of yourself. Your talent, your knowledge of music, your delightful personality, and your beauty are the magic that is the “Dani Show!” Congrats on what you have accomplished. And always remember those arenas of 15,000 people. They are for you!

That is such a beautiful song Dani. I'm glad you reacted to this one. It's one of my favorites. There is beautiful ballad with an amazing vocal intro by Elvis called "That's Someone You Never Forget" that I want to recommend to you. Apparently in 1961 Elvis asked his friend Red West to come up with lyrics for that title. So Red sat down at the piano and did just that.
Some think that this song is about Elvis' mom. But it's just speculation. When Elvis' marriage to Priscilla fell apart in the early 70's Red wrote "Separate Ways" for Elvis and then suggested "Always on my Mind" to him. Elvis told Red, "You're killing me with these songs, man." Red didn't write many songs for Elvis. But the ones he did seemed to be incredibly personal and resonated deeply with Elvis.
Red West, was a long term Memphis Mafia member (bodyguard) and had small parts in many of Elvis' movies, usually fight scenes. Unfortunately, he is probably mostly remembered now for his part in the infamous book published in 1977 "Elvis, What Happened?"

Ditto my feelings on the Love Letters 1970 version.....I like the '70 version more, too. It's a more mature version, later in his career. As I recall, there's better audio mix...fuller orchestral working. He's later in his career, at his peak, so he's had time to re-work it. Elvis must have felt the same way, or he wouldn't have re recorded it.

Hey Dani, A quick story about Love Letters. It was the piano man's first recording session a guy by the name of Tony Brown, he would later become the head of MCA Nashville in the 80s and had a legendary career in the music industry. Anyway the story goes Floyd Cramer who was Elvis' regular piano man at the time was late so Tony was filling for him and when Floyd got there he could not replicate what Tony was doing so Elvis said something like let the kid play.. According to Tony the re record of 1970 was his idea because he thought he could out do the 1966 version. Elvis' would also start singing this live in 1976 when Tony joined the live band.

Belated thanksgiving from here in the UK. I love listening to your channel Dani, maybe I'm bias but your "Thank you very much Thursday" is simply the best I love all music yes including Oprah namely Pavarotti, Jonathan Antoine (BGT runner up)
Would love if you gave him some air time his version of country road is tribute to all NHS workers & all front line workers world wide. Anyway Happy thanksgiving again x

Happy Thanksgiving Dani. Check out the stripped down version of the song without the over produced vocals and background. It’s delightful how he delivered it vocally and with emotion. Peace my friend
