Hi car wizard I'm the original owner of that kitt. the builder was Scott Benson. nice to see it in good hands. The door handle should work. I believe you have to deactivate the alarm button twice. The dash does a lot more but it's got a lot of buttons to figure out. I'm missing my baby already 😂

My brother made a replica from a 1982 trans am. He had to sell it due to buying a house. Once he put it up for sale, it somehow got to David Hasselhoffs ex wife, Catherine Hickland. She came all the way across country to look at the car in person than a few weeks later, sent a carrier to pick it up. So the car that was in some of her videos, I actually rode around in with my brother.

The KITT we built was built with screen-used parts from the show and cost $160,000. A lot of people need to learn about what screen accuracy is and such, but it's a great video! We also made molds of all our screen-used parts from the show. We own a ton of screen-used parts and toys from Knight Rider.

Knight Rider Historians has a screen used KITT and they found the original truck and trailer, which is currently under restoration. The strobe light came from the Cylons, from Glen A Larson's other TV show Battlestar Galactica. The strobe light in this instance was a scanner for KITT. Hopefully my comment doesn't get deleted again...

This show came out right at the peak of the Dukes of Hazzard. For the earlier part of my childhood I was torn between old school muscle of a '69 Charger or new high tech design in the Trans Am. It was a great time to be a formative car enthusiast.
Kids today have no idea. Our generation and older were really the last ones who couldn't wait to start driving, desperately wanted to learn how to drive stick, and spend our summer days under the hood of a cool car. For me, by the time I was 12, I left the bike riding and football playing to all the other kids in the neighborhood. I wanted to just hang out at my uncle's shop to work on cars, run for parts with my Grandfather, and get to wrenchin on something.
Can't do that on some electric bathtub.

Same here. My brother and I could not wait to tear and engine down and put it back together. Both of us later became jacks of all trades around the house. Our dad was a self employed plumber who built his own house from the slab up and we grew up on a heated slab, which was great in winter. No heater motor, no feeling of air blowing around and very little dust in the house as a result. Men who could fix and repair and not be intimidated by a screwdriver.

Ha - even tweaked the theme for this one, nice. Yeah, at almost 50, that show was a huge part of my childhood. When it came out, one thing younger folks might not realize is that the 1982 Firebird Trans Am, _especially_ tweaked for the KITT build, looked like *nothing* else on the road. That was a time that most cars were still very boxy. KITT looked like something out of the future, and with all that added stuff inside, yeah that was just so hi-tech looking. The company that did the conversion sure did an excellent job on it. I mean even that license plate trick; that was something the KITT in the series could do, so kudos to them for such attention to detail.

Born in 80', Knight Rider was easily one of my favorite vehicular 80's action shows. I thought I was dreaming as a kid, when I got to sit inside and talk to KITT at Universal.
So lucky to have met the Hoff in 2010 in a bar and grill as he was about to shoot a scene for his reality show in Malibu. I approached him as he sat with his assistant in a closed bar area near the restrooms. I discretely whispered to him, "excuse me, but I'm a huge fan. I hope I'm not bothering you, but I was just wondering if it would be ok to take a picture with you if it's not too much trouble." He had his glasses on and was reading. He still paused for 3 more eternal seconds, then he turned with a big smile, got up, and said, "Sure absolutely, no trouble at all. My assistant can take it" He was very nice. Asked where we were from (omaha), He then exclaimed "Oh, Your Big Red! How Bout them Skers. I got family out near there". Unfortunately his thorny beoch assistant took the photo on a 1 count to 3 and refused to take another even though I was not ready., but Hoff was beaming with his arm around me looking surprised when I was actually saying OK to his asst when she snapped it.
Needless to say, Best decision I ever made. Later an old lady coworker told me she knew of someone who babysat Hoff's nieces and nephews.

That tracer light is intersting in that it is a common feature across a couple of TV shows. The first place it was seen was in the original 1970s Battlestar Galactica show, the Cylon Warriors had that same type of light in the eyes of the their very highly polished suits. The next time it came up was with KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), in the "eye" of the car. How this happened is both shows were created by Glen A. Larson who did a number of very successful shows both in the SF Genre, Buck Rogers, and in more mundane realms with shows like Quincy MD, The Fall Guy and probably his best known show, Magnum PI.

Awesome! Just so viewers are aware, those seats in the car are not aftermarket... they're the stock 1982 Trans Am seats. 'PMD' stands for, Pontiac Motor Division. Also, the wheels and black hub caps are stock for the 1982 - 1983 Trans Am.
That looks like a nicely built replica! I would love to buy one that's already built, but it would have to be absolutely perfect. Hopefully the perfect one that I know about will come up for-sale again in the near future and I'll be in a position to purchase it.

"I don't know why all the gripes"
It was pretty much the first electronic fuel injection system used by GM, and required some actual skill and thought to diagnose and repair things, which really upset mechanics used to working on carbs. Once you actually understand it, it's really simple. The single TBI version of the system was used on the Fiero Iron Duke 4 cylinder, and other GM vehicles of the time. A good scan tool like the Snap-On MT2500 makes diagnostics and repair of the system a breeze.

Thanks for a nice video. I have owned a 1982 Trans am since 1989 and the first thing I did was add the custom Kitt bumper ,scanner and driving lights.I do question this one as being a 1984,as the cross fire system was only available in the f-body Trans am and Z 28 Camero for the 1982 and 1983 model years. 1984 only offered the base lg4 carburetor 305 and the l69 h.o. carburetor 305 engine, the only cross fire engine in 1984 were on the all new c4 corvettes. A really nice part of this replica is the parallalla cloth on the viscount (pmd) seats.the aftermarket seat upholstery offered by all of the suppliers has an incorrect velour fabric with a color which is much too light. I am looking forward to seeing your progress with this project.

The black wheel covers are factory items, you can still see the Pontiac arrowhead that has been painted over. The seats are factory Pontiac as well. PMD stands for Pontiac Motor Division.

I think the determining difference is stock chassis or not. There are rwd drag cars that don’t have a stock chassis but are still road legal that have done over 250mph in a standing quarter. Roll racing cars are impressive for how fast they go while still maintaining so much of the stock car/chassis.

Been getting notifications. No problem. I love Knight Rider. This KITT replica is very authentic looking. Kudos to the owner of that car. The Tesla comparison is a little unfair. A Tesla will not leap fifty feet in the air. A Tesla will not have a conversation with you. Tesla "Full Self Driving" will NOT break you out of jail either.

i remember hearing that pontiac donated all the trans am for the show but the deal was they HAD to be destroyed after the show was done for good..a guy that worked at the junkyard where they were crushed saved a bunch of parts before they went to the crusher...one of those front red LED lights went for big money...

    • @fixman88
      @fixman88 10 місяців тому +1

That was because those cars were damaged during rail transport when the vehicle transporter railcars derailed. Because of that GM considered them not road-worthy and required their destruction. Not all of the cars used in the show were involved in the rail accident which is why some are still around.

There are a few things that can be done with those radial compressors. Someone does or did make O-rings from a different material that seal better. There are a few other things that can be done to rebuild those compressors better. Another option is some engines can be swapped to the Frigidaire A6 compressor, just requires a bracket. For example I have done that swap on an Oldsmobile 350 diesel, using a compressor bracket off an Oldsmobile 350 gas V8. The A6 compressors never seen to have any kind of issues. Another thing that can be done is a swap to a Sanden/Zexel/Denso style compressor. Various companies make adapter brackets and kits with those and a compressor and line adapters. There are also 12v electric compressors now that are not too expensive and perform well, although you aren't going to run one on a stock 60 amp alternator, so you would want to upgrade to a CS130/CS144 to use one.

Top down solutions sells (and makes) head light actuator rebuild kits. The passenger window the outer window sweep is held on with several hex head screws the window will catch and eventually chip on it. Best is to replace with button head torx or Allen. (Have owned an 89 since 97 so I've rebuilt everything on that car)
The PMD seats are not aftermarket they were a GM option (now highly doubt that car was originally equipped with the PMD seats but it could have been)
If you convert to R134 the 91-92 condenser works better than the 82-90.
Also if putting on a lift the fender pinch weld is not a lift point.

A possible modernization/upgrade for the R4 pancake compressor would be a Sanden unit, the 508 I think. There are conversion brackets available for pretty cheap, and you can either find a compressor that comes with a line kit or find an adapter plate that matches the original hoses.
