The lyrics are deep. Barks interview on Forbidden Tale; KANAMI: Actually, SAIKI had been telling me for a while that she wanted a song with a lot of development. And when I was making this song, I happened to have experienced the death of someone close to me, so I was thinking about things like "What is life?" and "What does it mean to live?" So I thought I'd like to try to express things like "What is a person's life?" and "Life has ups and downs" through music. Even though there are ups and downs and many changes, there should be a core that never changes, so I expressed that in the riff... I'm kind of embarrassed to say this myself SAIKI: Don't be embarrassed! (laughs) Miku Kobato: That's cool! Barks: So in other words, the riff is like a fixed point, and it feels like it's watching over the changes in life, right? KANAMI: That's right! SAIKI: This is a song that I thought was very wonderful from the first time I heard it. I got a lot of images when I listened to it. This is exactly the kind of song I wanted. Barks: The lyrics of this song were written by SAIKI. It's a little different from "life has ups and downs," but it seems to express a view of life. What did you want to express here? Saiki: Every day, I realize how wonderful music is, and while I was researching the history of music, I learned that there were songs that were forbidden to sing long ago, and stories that were forbidden to tell. But now, with modern technology, we have the chance to restore them and listen to them, and the reality is that we can now read stories that were once forbidden. That made me realize that art is something that never disappears, and I thought that this in itself is very romantic and beautiful. When I thought about what would happen if I expressed life in music, while asking the question "What is life?" that KANAMI asked, I thought that "living" means "we are here now." I wrote this song with the hope that even if our bodies were to disappear, someone might someday pass on this music. I was thinking that it would be nice if our music would remain in the future. I thought it would be wonderful if people in the future who would never know BAND-MAID would find out about us through this song, and if our music could give someone a push. I've experienced something like that myself. There are many musicians who were no longer in this world when I started to like music, right? But their music gave me courage, taught me the greatness of music, and gave me a push, so I wrote these lyrics hoping that I could do that someday. Akane: When I listened to this song, I got a bright future and a positive and beautiful impression, so I didn't want to ruin it by filling it with clutter in terms of the performance. I wanted to make a song that would stick in people's ears and resonate with their hearts, so the drums are unusual for BAND-MAID songs, with the same rhythm repeated. Even though there were changes for each section, there were parts where the drums were focused on highlighting the melody, so that it would fit in the ears. I just had a strong desire to deliver the melody. MISA: I felt that this song had a story and the development was interesting, so I played it while being conscious of making the different characters in each section while keeping it simple. I tried changing the touch of my picking and things like that.
I love this! Thank you! It shows that they do, indeed, put an enormous amount of thought into their writing. I love the idea that the disparate sections revolve around an anchor - whether it be Kanami's riff, Akane's narrow attack on the kit or Misa's keeping it simple while still being conscious of each character in each section! Rock On!
Always a treat to watch one of your videos. Just a great blend of thoughtfulness about the artistry without having to get too in the weeds like it’s music school. There’s a whole spectrum of reaction channels, some too superficial, some so fixated on the note choices or technique that they lose sight of the art and spirit of the music. Glad you always keep it in perspective. Right in the sweet spot for me.
The songs already released earlier in the year are just Band-Maid awesomesauce! The six new songs are so tightly integrated and complex, it's going to take a Tokyo minute to assimilate. But I know I will end up loving them just like all the other 130 songs! 😉🤘 btw - We should all wish a "Good Luck" to Band-Maid's new self-run management company: Maidit, Co., LTD! Thx, John!
I think your opinion as expressed is awesome - each part makes a lot of sense. In the preparations for song, Saiki was apparently also ruminating about people in the future discovering them after they`ve gone (as she herself had discovered a lot of music by people who are no longer around) - singing loud for hundreds of years - nothing can stop us.
These reactions are so enjoyable. Thank you 🙏🏻 I agree your view 100 %. For me..Band-Maid is there own league when it comes to greatness of songwriting etc. Lovin’ it 🔥❤️
Thanks, RC, couldn't agree more that this is a masterclass in songwriting. They've said in interviews that they're interested more in stories, and with FT in particular, you get short chapters that link together beautifully.
from JAPAN. Thank you for your immediate react. As ever, we were impressed by the depth of thought and analysis. BAND-MAID has not stopped moving forward, and seems to be climbing the stairs step by step towards greater heights. If possible, I would like to know what you think of the new album as a whole. On 25 September, BAND-MAID became independent from their office and set up their own company, MAIDIT CO. We look forward to further success.

Just when I think The Maids cannot possibly get any more special (and they are UNBELIEVABLY special), they go and construct this absolute MASTERWORK. "Forbidden Tale" blows me away. It's EVERYTHING Maid while somehow jumping to new, unforeseen heights. We are damned lucky to be a part of it. GREAT analysis, RC! 🕊
It's one of my prize possessions! You can't know how happy I was when you sent that to me! I have my eye on a turntable from Amazon. Other items for the channel had to take priority but soon! BTW, you can't see it because of the screen but my #1 guitar is hanging below it! Rock on!
Really good analysis. You get a lot out of a first reaction as usual. My favourite band for years now because of the detailed writing and presentation. No wonder I get goose bumps.
Mr. Rock Candy, I have listened to this song several times, but never "got" it until your reaction. Thank you . These ladies are truly incredible, absolutely incredible. They write songs that are just so so so unfathomable. Thanks again.
Kanami is the other rhythm (and texture) guitarist like Kobato is the other vocalist. Two of the secret ingredients that take B❤M over the top. Thanks for making me have this thought and reminding me that I should go back and pay attention to legendary lead guitarists when they're NOT playing a lead 😊

Such an interesting way of looking at the songband video. Really enjoy your perspective
So Kanami shows us her beautiful new guitar, and she doesn't treat us with a solo in the song. What a tease.Ha!Ha!

I’m ready for a Band-Maid rock opera album with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra backing them up.
Thank you for your insight!
Great reaction yet again. Good job.
