R9 is the best player I've ever seen. There was just nobody like him. By the age of 20 he was the best footballer on the planet by far. I remember crying when he suffered that gruesome injury. That he was able to come back from that and still remain one of the best... speaks not only of the talent but the spirit of the man. God bless R9!!!

Remember Ronaldo played in inter Milan Barcelona and Madrid. These are 3 iconic clubs in Europe and won with them all. Injuries were less of what deprived him, I think the fame were too much for them to handle and couldn't take great care of their bodies. I miss him tho Ronaldo delimma

I believe R9 had hypothyroidism as well I read somewhere. Makes a lot of sense especially later after all of the injuries.
R9 at Barca and Inter was the best player ever. The fact that he had threatening career ending injuries and still came back and won a World Cup and still did what he did for Madrid (including the champions league Hat-Trick at Old Trafford) might make him even better!
Ronaldo and Ronaldinho both loved to have fun, and they put enjoying life before their career. Maybe that cut short their careers, but maybe that's also why they were so good to watch. Because they were free on the pitch in ways others weren't - they would try things others wouldn't even think to do, and they had the talent to back it up.

I have yet to see another Ronaldo the real one. He’s was scary and lightning fast with his feet. It hurt me even more as an inter fan and then he left us. I’m just glad he still was the best even with those career ending injuries and the two world cups. If only he never got hurt who knows what else he would accomplish?

He was fantastic as player, never dive, excellent in passing players either by fancy dribbling or speed, and this cost him, because it was almost impossible to take the ball from him clean.
Robert Prosinecki one of the best talents I’ve ever seen who didn’t reach his potential. At the time he was sold to Real Madrid he was the most expensive transfer in World football.
Balotelli completely squandered his potential, he never really achieved much outside of brief periods of excellent form. At least Hazard was a great player up until 2019 and then seemed to stop caring.

Back in the 90s footballers were built like a tank because they have to train the whole body to endure the tackles and hard falls as well as the direct running game.
These days footballers are slimmer and lighter because they can get away with falling over at the slightest of nudges and falling with that weight isn’t an issue.
So when your body is heavy with muscle and falling from hard tackles, over time Ronaldo became injury prone. Nowadays, footballers are protected so the less brave type of players become successful.
Back then, it was the toughest that rose to the top, not so much a matter of too much skill etc….. because it is a man’s game.

You’re one of the few who remember. Balon d’or used to just be European footballer of the year not a global award. I think the problem was merging fifa and balon d’or which gave balon d’or more credibility and reduced the fifa award. Ronaldo is the finest player in the 90’s. The FIFA World Player of the Year award was the most prestigious individual award back then just as the Ballon d'Or is now. The FIFA The Best award has as much prestige now as the Ballon d'or had back then.

Besides the fragile Patellar Tendons which gave out in both of his knees, Ronaldo R9 (most of us die hard fans still call him Ronaldiñho... the other guy is Ronaldiñho Gaucho to us) he suffered from Hypothyroidism which caused his weight gain issues. I think this more than anything did him in, because it came to the point where he just couldn't perform to his unbridled capacity. Still had the skill, but just couldn't execute. It's unfortunate, but what incredible memories he left for us to look back and enjoy.

Please check fat ronaldos numbers before injuries. Check also he's running at players and taking them on. There's a good chance you won't but you can make an estimation of what would have happened if he was injury free. I'm assuming you are a reasonable person.

In his first season at Inter Milan he scored 34 goals in 47 matches. Next season he score 15 goals in 28 matches. Together before injury in Inter Milan R9 scored 49 goals in 75 games. Also another fact was that he got rare disease in his career which he have to retire in 34 age. He should never went to Inter Milan. So wrong career moves destroyed his career.
