Homeworlds are the best module ever added to the game - they feel like they're right at home, they add unique depth and possibilities, without being too small and subtle like the Tokens, which are useful to have but don't change the flavour of a game nearly as much. In general, XP3 was by far and away the most well-rounded package yet, and I can't wait to see even more.
The wildest variant yet. Immensely fun but also really taxing. Changes the game at a such fundamental level it's a whole new experience to learn and unravel. Has been a delight testing this expansion and can't wait to see what absurd plays people come up with
I’m glad I watched this because our group found all of the expansion rules combined to be overwhelming and I’ve just learned that some of them are *variants*. Glad to learn that, because I like leader skills and love home worlds, but I couldn’t do both at the same time and I thought it was expected to use them all! This is my favourite addition with the expansions, thank you for the creative ideas with this one
A question: If you decided that someone needed a second Emperor-style homeworld, who would get it? From the top of my head, the most sense lore-wise to get it are either CHOAM, who has multiple 'Tupiles' alongside THE Tupile, and Ecaz/Moritani who will get another shared mechanic among them in form of Planet Ginaz, over which they will fight all over again.
Mind = Blown. Don't take your faction ability for granted. Somebody might challenge you. I really like the idea. I'm very curious how the games with this variant will play out in general. 🤩🍿
Really excited for this whole expansion, ran into a situation late game where some players didn't know what to do due to spice blows spawning in the storm and everything else getting occupied. There will be plenty of incentive to fight over stuff even as the bigger players duke it out for the victory.
I've resisted watching this video because my play group has only dabbled with the expansions I currently have but damn that's too cool I got to get it someday
Quick question on homeworlds: had an interesting situation where Emperor and Mortani both jumped on Fremens empty reserves because the spice blow was doubled and Fremen was about to gather a motherload. We actually weren't sure how many people could be on someone's homeworld and didn't see anything specifying that we couldn't, so since Fremen weren't even there Emperor and Mortani fought to occupy it. Was this correct? And would it still be correct if Fremen were also there? Making three factions fight on one honeworld. Was still an interesting thing to happen even if it wasn't allowed.
It’s true the rules don’t specify one way or the other. The original intent was to use stronghold rules, so maximum of two factions, but with no Fremen present, your example would have been perfectly legal.
Hey Jack! Thank you for this. I’m so excited for this part of the expansion. I’ve got three questions! What planet do you think has the strongest homework’s advantage? What’s the biggest change you have seen to the game with this variant? And is there any hint of a release date? I’m so keen!
Should be out in two weeks. Biggest change is players being more cautious early. They want to milk their new high-threshold advantage before incurring possible low-threshold penalties (and opening themselves to attack). BG getting to swoop in with more advisors early is pretty huge.
@@jackredathewarp Thank you for responding Jack! Two weeks! That’s awesome. Do you know by any chance if the pre-order is cheaper than what the normal price will be, or if it’s benefit is getting the game ASAP. Interesting game change. Less troops on the board will be cool change. I’ve got an Emperor friend who will almost immediately put 5 saduukar on one of the bottom two strongholds to be a pretty intimidating force in those areas early on- but this would now leave him open to attack on his home world. Very interesting to see how it changes play styles. Go BG. Doubling the advisors just adds to their Machiavellian ways.
Are these variations modular, Jack? I like the basic premise of homeworlds and especially that they help buff some factions, and make others a bit more interesting. I like the high threshold and low threshold concept, makes it an interesting balancing point. A couple of q's: 1) Does this finally make the Guild's power to ship back into reserve something that is actually useful and actually happens?? 2) I'm a bit concerned about battles in homeworlds. I worry that it will add to the game length, and cognitive load, without adding as much to gameplay. Yes it's thematic that nowhere is safe in the Dune universe... but I worry that it adds a large new factor which will bloat the game too much. If we really dislike it, would it be very unbalanced to simply not allow attacking other players' homeworlds? 3) on the issue of balancing the base game and the expansions, would you be interested in making a video specifically on that topic: - how you test new ideas? - how you balance new cards and mechanisms? - how much feedback from the community do you take? - How much of the balancing is presumed to be done by the table, as opposed to mechanisms (a la Cosmic encounter) - How do you balance for Strategy/skill vs luck and chaos eg a larger treachery deck makes it more chaotic BUT the Atreides power to know the card reduces the chaos. BUT they might not be in a game! I feel like Cosmic Encounter can be more unbalanced and chaotic and get away with it. But Dune needs to be a more strategic and skill-based game. Regards, Salman
1) So if you occupy one of the Emperor's two Homeworlds (gain half the spice from Market Buy's), can you bid on something in Market and will get back half your spice for that purchase (the Emperor keeps the other half)? 2) If you have a planet Occupied, and a Nexus occurs, and you form an alliance WITH the person whose homeworld you have occupied.... what happens if you are not Ecaz :P? 3) Will you ever produce a 'Heart-plug' promo treachery card? :P 4) Have you considered alternatives for Spice-Combat? My group dislikes it, and we've done away with it - giving minor spice-income buffs to Fremen/Ixian/CHOAM to keep the theme in play, but without the mathmatical clutter. I respect you said "You prefer more complex crunchy rules", but thought I might ask (I offered my alt-spice combat rules on BGG if you were ever curious). Thankyou again for all your hard work. I look forward to seeing the other Homeworlds ASAP.
Example we put in the rulebook: ": If Harkonnen occupies Kaitain, and Atreides makes a payment of 5 spice for a Treachery Card, the Emperor would receive 3 spice, and Harkonnen would receive 2 spice. This is also true if Harkonnen were the ones making the 5 spice payment." So, yes- a rebate! 2- You cannot form an alliance with someone occupying your homeworld. 3- Sadly, heartplugs are non canon. 4- Stay tuned.
Every video the hype train picks up more and more spice! 😂 Is there a release date set yet for this expansion? Any chance for a Dune legacy style expansion in the future (perhaps similar to Rise of Fenris?)
A couple small questions for you! First, if you ship to someone’s homeworld, must you battle every time or can they chose not to battle you? In the case battles don’t have to always happen, can you bribe someone asking them to allow you to occupy them in exchange for not battling them on Arrakis?
So, do I get this right? Homeworld is where your reserves are located. When you revive your forces, they go to the homewortld by default. In order to occupy your homeworld your enemy has to win a battle there, eliminating your entire reserve. And once that is done, surviving invaders remain in your homeworld. But if that is correct, how do you go about revivals when your homeworld is occupied? Do all your revived forces automatically go to homeworld and battle the occupants? Doesn't this mean that a large invasion force can cut your reserves dry for several turns? Yes, you get a home advantage in battle, but if you can only afford reviving 2-3 forces at a time, it can take several battles to reclaim your home planet against some spiteful opponent.
I'm not sure if anyone will see this to answer my questions but I have so many about Homeworlds in particular: Can Fremen ship to other homeworlds without help from the Guild? Can I ship from an enemy homeworld onto Arrakis without help from the Guild? Can I ship from an enemy homeworld to a seperate enemy homeworld without help from the Guild? Tupile says it adds +1 CHOAM Charity when at low threshold, but I was under the impression CHOAM cannot take Charity. So, if CHOAM is at 0-1 spice at the start of CHOAM Charity, do they collect spice to get up to 2 (or 3 if at low threshold), and then collect their 12 spice (in a 6 player game)?
@@jackredathewarp when you say "if CHOAM has no income," does that mean they only take Charity when they use their Cancel token or someone uses a Karama on them?
Ive been looking at the homeworlds and it seems Salusa secondus low threshold has a typo. It says 0 - 2 Sarduakar Reserves, was it supposed to be 0-1 Sarduakar Rederves?
Did anybody know if these expansion packs would be available at least on black and white for printing?, i cant get even the basic game due to economical crisis here in my country (Argentina), there is no one selling dune or any other related board game, even if i try to purchase from overseas (in my case is very very expensive, my monthly income is only 120 USD) the gov will block the package in the custom house and NEVER send a notification or even worse they stole it and report it missing.
It does not seem clear to me how exactly battles happen on a homeworld. If someone attaked me with some force and i decided to troll and dial zero, using cheap hero and no cards, i lose all my undialed forces?

CHOAM being based on Tupile is a nice little lore explanation as to why it's a hidden planet that is also a safe sanctuary for exiled houses. :)
