  • On April 18th, 2024, NYU's Iranian Studies Initiative and Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies joined in a discussion with Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet regarding Iran’s relations with the United States at a time when global concerns over racial politics, gender relations, and social inequality dominated headlines. Based on extensive archival research, Heroes to Hostages considers Iran's growing engagement with civil rights and gender relations at an awkward time in its history, as the ruling monarchy adopted themes of social import despite its ironic legacy of political dictatorship. As in America, Iranians dealt with the avant-garde in art and society and confronted a sexual revolution of their own. Following the two nations through wars, decolonization, and revolution, Kashani-Sabet’s Heroes to Hostages: America & Iran, 1800-1988 presents a history of a diplomatic rivalry that informs geopolitics to this day.
