  • If you're thinking about starting Munro Bagging and are asking the question 'Which Munro is the easiest to climb' then look no further than the beautiful Schiehallion, standing above Loch Rannoch in Perthshire. It's a fantastic Munro for beginners looking to stretch their legs, with a very well maintained path almost all the way to the summit, and excellent views, Schiehallion is a great place to see if Munro Bagging is for you.

      This would be quite fun in the snow I imagine. Once you reach the end of the path there are a couple of false summits along the way for sure. Thanks for watching.

      It was great starting later on and missing the crowds so worth considering while the summer is still here. The path is so good, definitely the best of the Munros I’ve done so far. Alistair

      I wasn’t completely sure on the tallest point in Belgium but suspected it was shorter than Scotland. There must be a few scenic trails to follow though?

      Always sensible to turn back if the weather is too bad. The mountains aren’t going anywhere and will be climbable another day. Hope the weather forecast improves for the weekend for you.

      @@HighlandHikers Hi guys, its been 29 years sine I left Scotland, I live in Perth West Australia, great seeing the highlands, i used to do a lot of hill walking and climbing as I worked in the Greenock sports centre with the outdoor pursuits team, when are you going to do the notched ridge in Glencoe ? or have you done it, depending on the time of year you do it it can be a wee bit treacherous. I would love to see it again, keep up the good work guys, look forward to viewing the videos.

      We haven’t been up there yet and I’m not entirely sure I could cope with it if I’m honest. I think Douglas would manage it but I’ll need some practice before tackling it. Hopefully it’s not long before one of us tries it!

      Douglas here! I’ve done it twice before (2002 and 2006), but that was long before we started the channel. I’d love to go back and film it some time, just need to persuade Alistair 😆

    Excellent Adventure Douglas and Alastair up Scheihallion. I thought you two would mention the experiment to estimate the mass of the mountain using the Scottish Mathematician Charles Hutton's invention of Hill Contours. The calculation of the mass of this mountain was then used to estimate the mass of the Earth. A questionable experiment surely the figures wouldn't be that accurate. A pretty rocky summit though. I must have a go at this one next year.

    • @HighlandHikers
      @HighlandHikers  3 роки тому

      It’s interesting to think about how accurate they would be with their calculations. We tried to find what the mass of the mountain was but couldn’t find anything unfortunately. How many Schiehallions would equal the mass of the Earth do you think? Alistair

    • @douglasbates389
      @douglasbates389 3 роки тому

      @@HighlandHikers Hi Alastair Well a good question how many Schiehallions its probably in the order of hundreds of thousands. It was the Density of the mountain that was calculated initially thus giving the Mass of Mountain and then the Earth. Too many Variables involved here to get an accurate answer I think. geophysical data is one set for sure. An interesting problem though.

    • @HighlandHikers
      @HighlandHikers  3 роки тому

      Quite something to contemplate. I wonder how much the mountain would have affected the pull on the item they dropped as part of the experiment. I’ll definitely be reading more into it.

    Beautiful video documentary! I would like to come to Scotland to hike Schiehallion but was wondering what is the best time of year to do that including hiking Ben Nevis. What date did you do Schiehallion in 2021?

    • @HighlandHikers
      @HighlandHikers  2 роки тому

      Thanks James! We did Schiehallion in July, which would also be a good time of year to do Nevis. June to August is probably going to be best, although you can never guarantee the weather on the Scottish hills!

    Did this one for the first time a few weeks ago in an inversion - wasn't first parked but was first down and ended up being the de-facto 'how long to the top?' answerer!!

    • @HighlandHikers
      @HighlandHikers  3 роки тому

      And did you give them the time it took you or the time it would take them? I seem to have missed the inversions unfortunately and I’ve still never experienced one sadly.

      I unfortunately put my foot in it last month at White Coomb when someone asked us when do they get to the flat bit on the way up to the loch and I said that they were on the flat bit, which to be fair was still a bit of a slight incline.

    Thx for this lads: inspired to get a bit fitter and start bagging munros! Notice you're both using sticks and wonder if that's recommended? If so, which ones? I was up Conic Hill last week and was wondering if they'd be useful.

    • @HighlandHikers
      @HighlandHikers  3 роки тому

      It’s definitely a great way to get a wee bit fitter although my waist line would say otherwise! I find the sticks make things slightly easier and get your arms moving too. They can certainly help with extra support both on the way up and the way down, and have saved me from a few falls too. Also very helpful for finding out how deep bogs are! You generally want light and strong poles and then go by budget. Which Munro do you fancy starting with - Alistair
