Congrats!!!🎉 Yes!!! What area do you live to work in for sustainability? Once you know what area you love go for that. If you are interested in energy conservation for example, look for companies and organizations that focus on energy in the sustainability space. So your search may start with utility companies look to see if they have a department that focus on conservation, then while on their site see who they partner with in the community or other organizations they may partner with and allow those partners to lead you into discovering more companies and organizations. One of the best advice I was given starting out was to just put myself out there. How? Clean up your LinkedIn account, say you are open for work. Utilize the career center at your college and university, if they have one. Allow them to help you generate a nice resume and cover letter that is tailored to a graduating student. Prepare and prepare yourself for interviewing. Have you introduced down packed and ready at anytime someone ask what you do? Let them know. By taking the first step of researching organizations and putting yourself out there, I promise you will get leads and connections to land you in the place that your desire!!! I wish you the very best!!! Find me on LinkedIn, I try my best to forward opportunities that come across my path in my feed.

Hi Angela, do you think it is possible to get into the field without a masters degree? I have a BA in English, and I am wondering what kind of experience could possibly help me get into an entry level position. If you have any advice, that would be awesome :)

Absolutely! You are able to get into the field without a degree, although the degree helps within areas such as networking and pay. You do not need a Master's degree, but with saying that the majority of my colleagues do have Masters degrees. But, the one key of experience that is needed really is project management experience and if you are looking to be a consultant, would need to be somewhat of an expert and/or subject matter expert. You can gain all of this type of experience by working on local sustainability projects, one place to look for working on local sustainability projects is your local chapter of USGBC if green buildings will be your subject matter. If your subject matter is transit, look into organizations that focus on sustainable transit. If looking to go straight into field without experience, look for jobs that you can work under a sustainability project manager, you will gain so much experience in a short period of time and be able to move into a consultant and/or project manager role easily. Hope that helps!

Hi there! Iam a Last year student doing bachelor's in environmental science. I would really like to get into sustainability consultant area. I have major interest in area of waste management and circular economy. Would you guide me, how do i proceed forward, where i start.

Hi!!! Congrats on the final leg of your Bachelor’s degree!! It’s a lot of work but will be worth it!
If you are looking into circular economy look into areas that focus on waste generation or look at areas that have a great model of circular economy. For applications of waste management, in the built environment check out TRUE, Total Resource Use & Efficiency. For waste and circular economy in supply chain look into cradle to cradle. You will want to focus on companies that embrace circular economies but also focus on not generating waste to begin with. There is a blog called, ALL ABOUT WASTE, please check it out, a friend and professional connection runs this company.
And lastly, if you are looking to get into consulting work try to get some experience under your belt sooner than later even if it is volunteer experience. Look to see if you can shadow a waste auditing company, network with zero waste professionals on LinkedIn, look to see what buildings in your area have a zero waste certification(take a tour and connect). One of the biggest skills you need in consulting is experience and project management skills. Build experience by volunteering or internship that focus on waste. I hope this helps!! And I wish you the very best on your journey😁
