    Have been tying for only a month, so my work is a bit sloppy but improving. This jig adds a whole new look beyond what I have been doing. Made a few mistakes on my first try but I really like the style and will keep at it. The fish probably don't notice the mistakes.

      Your right they don't notice mistakes. If they did , what do you think they see when they look at the bend and point of the hook. LOL
      Keep at it you'll get good.

    I watched this video then tied a larger white jig head with white marabou, body from mylar tubing, some green flashabu and a yellow hackle. Kind of goofy looking but I caught a nice smallmouth with it the first time I used it. Thanks for these videos.

    Well done. What's your thoughts on trimming the jig collar off prior to tying? Large nail clippers make short work of jig collars.

    • @TheFlymanJim
      @TheFlymanJim  6 років тому

      if you mean trimming the collar hackle barbels I wouldn't do that I would try to get smaller hackle barbels.

    Awesome! What are the basic tools I need to get started on tying flies and jigs? Did it take long for you to learn? Thanks for any advice!

    • @TheFlymanJim
      @TheFlymanJim  9 років тому

      The basics you need are a vice, bobbin holder, hooks and feathers and fur. You can get a fly tying kit from any of the larger outdoors stores. Bass Pro, Cabela's A kit will have everything you need to get started.

      Thanks a bunch Jim! I'm going to call Bass Pro to get a lesson from them to learn how to tie jigs and flies. I lose too many jigs every year trying to catch panfish, about time I learn to tie my own.

    • @TheFlymanJim

      I would use this in faster water or bigger rivers where you want it to get deep. you can also uses in lakes, just bounce in along the bottom.

  • @handicapitation3250

    How do you do your wraps so fast? My thread always breaks if I don't do it really slow.

    • @TheFlymanJim
      @TheFlymanJim  5 років тому +1

      You are either pulling to hard, you have a burr in the bobbin or you have bad thread. if you have kevlar thread cut ten inches put it in bobbin and spin the bobbin, this usually takes care of burrs . You can use dental floss if no kevlar.

    good looking jig and I really like the color combination on this one. the thing that always bothers me on your jig tying vids is that you use jigs with collars on them, why dont you get the ballhead jigs made for tying?

    • @TheFlymanJim
      @TheFlymanJim  10 років тому

      I picked these jigs up at Dick's. I didn't see any without the collar. I'll look out for them now. But I don't have any problem tying on them. Thanks for the suggestion.

    • @BigMike315Fishing

      Jim Misiura its more of a preference thing with the collar, ive never seen them at dicks without but basspro and cabelas both have them in the tying section and a lot of the mom and pop tackle shops have painted jigs without collars. if not you can find them on the net for a lot less than the big stores.

    • @anthonyvaughan6389

    Trying that hackle usage....I was given some assorted turkey feathers... Not any good marabou, but some irredecent colors in what appears to be neck feathers. They have a squared off tip naturally. So this is an experiment. I'm so green with tying I'm just trying things until I actually get good blood quill marabou. Is it possible to split the quill for a large wing feather that has good "barbulls" about 1 1/2" long or would it work better to use those cut off the quill and bunched into a tail?

    • @TheFlymanJim
      @TheFlymanJim  4 роки тому

      If you can make a dubbing loop and put the cut off barbels in it I think that would work. Just don't put too many in it. Slicing the feather is not something I would reccommend. The collar of this fly doesn't have to be marabou. Using a soft hackle would be better. The feathers you have are probably turkey flats, (body feathers). They are basicly marabou that didn't grow out.

    • @genesloan3175
      @genesloan3175 4 роки тому

      @@TheFlymanJim thank you for the advice. So the barbels of the wing feather would be better over body shank of hook? But not the collar. These jigs I'm wanting to do are generally for Crappie & Bluegill type lures .... I'm trying to learn in crash course fashion what will work, and what will never work. Lol, I bought a cheap feather boa at hobby store, and that's fallen into the never work category. The feathers might have a tip or two for the whole boa but most have been whacked off. They are bargain basement feathers with many broken or weak quills....
      What is good to know is the use of doing the barbels in dubbing method. Do you think I'd need a sparse group in the loop or is that just something I should play with to my eye in how good it looks. And would I fold them back as I wrapped the dubbing loop?

    • @TheFlymanJim
      @TheFlymanJim  4 роки тому +1

      @@genesloan3175 For the body you can use chenille if you have it, if not watch my video on the mini woolybugger. Is how I wrapped the body with the marabou from the tail, (left over). The Boa your talking about is from a Dollar store or such, saw them many times, your right not exactly the best marabou. If you use the dubbing loop go sparse at first, and try to trim the butt ends when you get the material in the loop. Then stroke them back as you wrap. You'll get it right after a couple.

    • @genesloan3175
      @genesloan3175 4 роки тому

      @@TheFlymanJim thanks, getting my real materials list together now.
      A further question. If I were to use the long wing quill feather barbels in dubbing manner. Would they work with a small wrap of Chenille at or near the bend to form a fan effect over the Chenille bump to be fanned over a nice Marabou tipped tail? These feathers have a nice irredecent pattern I'd like to try to utilize. Hoping to make something of these gift feathers that would be a nice natural bait looking lure. Especially since I was asked to provide the man with example of his gift in a lure for him to display in his office. Surprised me, and I was amazed but told him I'd try to do that.
