Thanks for the vid....You reminded me I have buy a Seal Mate and do the job before I start doing too many miles this spring. My seals aren't visibly leaking like yours but cleaning the seals at least once a season(or year) is just good maintenance.
08 CBR1000RR... left fork was mildly leaking. Tried out this guys method with a plastic bottle on these comments and it worked:) happy camper here haha thanks UA-cam! Saved myself $260 my mechanic was gonna charge me. It’s not an absolute fix but next time they leak I’ll go ahead and replace the seals*
@@300zxdriver it worked for a long time, when it gets any particles in the seal just use the tool and your good. I used it every other oil change just to be sure there was nothing in there. Cheers man 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Thanks Blockhead. I’d asked John Maxwell how to inspect and clean before permanent damage occurs between services. He sent me to check out this video. Your video makes the point of how to inspect and clean at the first sight of trouble. Which I’m sure could save a bunch of money for a repair that could have been avoided.
The Seal Mate is a nice tool, I used to use a strip of 35mm film and it works just as well, but who has 35mm film anymore? I've have mechanics tell me that it's good to do it as preventative maintenance once a year or so.
You have to open the fork from the top and refill but that is near impossible to get the right measurement without the forks being straight up. At that point you can guess or just pull it from the bike and do a proper fork oil replacement.
You can just take it for a ride to get the suspension working in between each cleaning, that will compress it dozens of times without any effort and possibly give it more force to push out anymore residual dirt.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but... aren't you *supposed* to have oil coming out when you compress? I mean, that's how you prevent friction in the fork, right?
I'm wondering about the oil that was lost out of that fork/shock. Is it replaceable? I know you only lost about an ounce, but every bit counts. Thanks! ✌️

Thanks for the video BLOCKHEAD, my fork seals were leaking, and this trick worked, great for me.
I changed the fork oil as well.
Thanks again
I had the same problem with my Kawasaki z1000 and that little tool worked perfect for mine. As usual, good vid man 👍🏽
Jmac7o7 How long does the fix last? Nobody talks about that.

It works I cut up a 2 liter coke bottle and made my own seal mate
And certainly not $7. yeesh.
Tony G looks like I’ll cut up my smart water bottle and give it a shot!
I can vouch for this. Fixed the small leak just now. Make sure you curve the plastic* no sharp edges

DunePanda did you find the answer to this???

A SLIGHT shading of oil is normal. You just don't want a seepage.
Fine and dandy; but why is that little piece of plastic SEVEN bucks?!
Because it's made for motorcycles. Just take an empty 2 liter bottle and make some yourself.
Yo yo..suuuuu dooooooo..✌
Thanks !
