In the song Lola if you pay attention it's Dave's voice that gives the lyrical lylt to the phrase. I know Ray wrote to song but without Dave's voice the recorded version would not have been what it was. One of the coolest songs in rock history.
I agree with you Ted....Always preferred Dave to his Brother....he is much more down to earth.... a Lovely Guy....there would be no Kinks without his brilliant guitar playing .... xxxx
one of greatest and most original guitar player in music history. Unintentionally , he changed the entire approach to the sound and technique of playing guitar influencing everybody from K. Richards, P.Townsend, S Marriot to E.Clapton, J.Back and J.Page. Enormous talent !
Ray has always been a genius - A brilliant singer/songwriter... but so is Dave. The evidence is all piled up! Dave has always come across to me as the most accessible of the two - perhaps even kinder and gentler. I would love it if I could meet him one day
Dave wrote a very good book a few years back. I recommend it. It tells the history of Dave’s family and the Kinks. Thank you, Dave. You have given us so much enjoyment.
Great musician....The Kinks were Brilliant....Dave always has time for a chat when we bump into each other in the High Road or in the local.... Top Man and a real gentleman.
The Kinks are the most underrated group/bands in U.K musical history. And Dave Davies and I have one thing in common, we were both born on the 3rd February 1947. Amazing!
Dave Davies is one rocks truly great pioneer guitarists.....his solos are brilliantly amazing...wonderfully crafted. Example... take a listen to Celluloid Heroes live....get better Dave...you're one of a kind...🎸🙂
I couldn't agree more with you guys, you always hear about the "greats" but there is none greater than Dave! Listen to the solo in "No More Looking Back" or the live version of "Slum Kids" not to mention the acoustic works on Muswell Hillbillies (which is my favorite album) GOD SAVE THE KINKS!
@BennyHinn: Yeah his voice was quite robbed directly after the stroke but it had very much improved since then. While he was recovering, Dave was very active on his webpage as that his cognitive passages were getting stronger daily and his ability to type single handed or fingered was right on the mark on multitudes of topics be silly and serious. Though he was not using his voice verbally, he still had taken the time to keep up with us while he was working on getting better and he knew we were there all together supporting him all the way and this is why he's back and better than ever. The power of positive energy is nothing to balk at, Dave is (still) living proof!
In my opinion, Ray Davis' songwriting ranks with Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Townsend. As a band, the Kinks contribution to the first "British Wave" in the 60's was huge in crystallizing that moment in rock music. Their aggregate, over arching content and reach in the ensuing decades, be it from records, film/video and live performances is of inestimable value. I recently read an article where in something on the order of 75% of British citizens polled could name "You Really Got Me" or "All Day and All of the Night" in two or three bars. Their music is woven into culture.
I absolutely agree with your assessment if The Kinks. They were both revolutionary and rebellious, and were a huge impetus o the so called "British Invasion" of rock and pop groups that came to America to perform. They were raw, sensual and bold in their appearance on stage, with a hard charging style of playing. And very versatile as well, with songs such as In the Summertime, which was a satire of Britain's oppressive taxation policies upon their citizens. Ray Davies wrote meaningful, evocative, and thought provoking songs in this sixties and seventies period, with collaboration with his brother Dave, to give their fans and audiences internationally a realistic and unfettered view of life and/ the human condition with an unfettered point of view. To the Kinks, and to Dave Davies, I say, well done.
The kinks best songs easily batter Lennon and Mcartney..but the Beatles had more opportunities..if the kinks were lavished in abbey road the world would be a different place..and Paul Mcartney would have written Lola..
jagger richards were not good at all. wtf? lennon mccartney fine but ray davies is probably a better songwriter than they are as well (and i love the beatles poss more than the kinks). he's better than all of them. I don't think Lennon Mccartney are known for their lyrics, it's their song craft.
Some think Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi was THE riff master, but years before him was Dave Davies. His riffs on "You Really Got Me" and "All the Day and All of the Night" really heralded the advent of the Hard Rock age. They stand the test of time. Simple, straightforward, they grab you by the balls and toss you into the chaos of Classic Rock's Golden Age. It could have been Keith Richards, Pete Townsend, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck, but it really was Dave Davies who brought that hammer down on our eardrums. Long live Rock n' Roll and God Bless Dave Davies.
I wish that America wouldn't have banned the band during the most important time of Rock History. It's really too bad that Ed Sullivan never asked them on his show. If they had made several appearances, such as The Beatles and The Stones, then perhaps the Kinks would have been just as large!
5:46 - The male interviewer embarrassed himself by calling an old song one of the new ones! Poor Dave knows that it's from one of the Kinks old albums, but he forgets which one it was! I remember it like yesterday because the 1970 album "Lola vs Powerman And The Money-Go-Round" was such a fine addition to the Kinks catalog! Up until that album and the one after in 1971 "Muswell Hillbillies" the Kinks could do no wrong! The music starts to get sketchy after that. I don't blame them because these albums never got the recognition that they so richly deserved! Way better than what the Stones or Broke-Up Beatles were selling at the same time. It's hard to keep knocking your brains out and and still being ignored!
Their music will be played just as long as the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkel. For years and years and years to come. They both seem like really nice guys, but they obviously have had bad times together and thats sad.
Great to see he has recovered and performing again, now you and your brother kiss & make up before it is too late, don't take this grudge to your grave!
It is 2021. Any new Kinks album forth coming? Dave traveled to England a few years ago and Ray and Dave were writing together. What became of it? Two bass players died, a keyboard player died. Some Kastoff Kinks still around.
yes.I am happy to just play their recrords in my house, personally. But nice if the boys could work out their shit coz they are brothers at th end of the day.Still,i empathise.I have 2 brothers and one is dead and i don't speak to the other coz he is a psychotic arsehole.
they way I heard it, soon as Ray got word of Dave's stroke he stopped everything and went to his brother's side at the hospital, and Ray played a big part in Dave's recovery. There is a thing to sibling rivalry, but when it comes down to it, there is real love ...
Wooterloo Sunset
bbc needs more people to intervew same drab faces every day give em another job charlie is such a bore nagge the rest of the team, all thease years hello bbc we need a different breakfast its a bore make changers.
Bless his soul...the guitar grandfather of heavy metal and punk
agreed!
In a world of Poneys such a true genuine star. The stones tried to be American but the kinks were always authenticity British
In the song Lola if you pay attention it's Dave's voice that gives the lyrical lylt to the phrase. I know Ray wrote to song but without Dave's voice the recorded version would not have been what it was. One of the coolest songs in rock history.
I agree with you Ted....Always preferred Dave to his Brother....he is much more down to earth.... a Lovely Guy....there would be no Kinks without his brilliant guitar playing .... xxxx
@@denistaylor6130you prefer him but Ray wrote all the songs😂
Dave also says some of the original chord progression came from him, so there’s that.
Ray didn’t always (read never) give Dave formal credit for his contributions to songs of various sorts including arrangements.
Just ace. Lovely bloke. Super talent. Song writing often over shadowed by his brother.
I was only 8 yrs old in 1964, but I remember those first 2 great records, and that AWESOME guitar sound of his coming out the car radio.
one of greatest and most original guitar player in music history. Unintentionally , he changed the entire approach to the sound and technique of playing guitar influencing everybody from K. Richards, P.Townsend, S Marriot to E.Clapton, J.Back and J.Page. Enormous talent !
Such a sweet soft voice. I love you Dave xxx
top bloke! god bless him .
All the best in your recovery Dave. Keep up the great spirit.
Waterloo Sunset - an absolutely perfect song. Has a wonderful warmth about it.
Ray has always been a genius - A brilliant singer/songwriter... but so is Dave. The evidence is all piled up!
Dave has always come across to me as the most accessible of the two - perhaps even kinder and gentler. I would love it if I could meet him one day
Good on you Dave mate, and great to see you looking healthy and back at work creating great music! bless you Dave.
oh thankyou friend :)
God Bless Dave Davies, vaudeville and variety. And Ray.
@5:06 "We love each other deeply", and he gives the FINGER, I loved it Dave.
Oh wow!! Missed that!
Well done Dave, we all love you xx
He was about to tell how he got the sound of You Realy Got Me and he cut the interview off.
Tremendous news. Such an energetic performer back in the day. Best wishes for a successful second act.
Guy is a legend and total powerhouse of Brit 60's/70's classics
The original "Dandy"and "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion".....This guy had some life......
Honestly, Ray & Dave, Dave & Ray. The finest musicians in my lifetime. I will always love them❤️❤️
Was listening to "Phobia" today. One of the best.Love Daves guitar on "It's alright"
I love Dave Davies
God I love that guy.
+Gina McGill I'm a Ray man. Pistols at dawn?
they are both phenomenal! :)
hahaha get along now guys!!! :)
Dave wrote a very good book a few years back. I recommend it. It tells the history of Dave’s family and the Kinks. Thank you, Dave. You have given us so much enjoyment.
The host cuts him off just as he's about to tell us about where the Really Got Me riff came from. Rude!
Such an underrated guitar player. Easily one of the best hands down
Great to see this true legend out and about and playing again. Thanks for the music Dave, here's wishing you all the best.
criminally underrated musician and brilliant vocal harmoniser.
good luck to him. He's still sounding pretty good.
when the boys were young, they looked so different but now they are more similar in facial features than ever before ...
I wouldnt say they were very different back then, but I thought the same thing, they're more similar now.
I bloody love you Dave xxxx
"The real star was my brother." -- Ray Davies, 2010.
Great Band. Seen Them many times ...."Keep Well Dave"
Great musician....The Kinks were Brilliant....Dave always has time for a chat when we bump into each other in the High Road or in the local.... Top Man and a real gentleman.
Ray took the glory but the pair of them were fantastic together.
Death of a Clown one of the greatest singles of the 60s
A true rock n' roll hero
His voice sounds as though he could be 18 years old!
his voice is the pretty similar to as it was in that video when he was young
That song was on Lola vs Powerman. Come on Dave. Love Dave by the way. Glad he is still kicking out the jams.
I love you Dave!
new material. then strangers comes on lol. excellent song
My first guitar hero
The Kinks are the most underrated group/bands in U.K musical history. And Dave Davies and I have one thing in common, we were both born on the 3rd February 1947. Amazing!
underrated by whom???
Dave Davies is one rocks truly great pioneer guitarists.....his solos are brilliantly amazing...wonderfully crafted. Example... take a listen to Celluloid Heroes live....get better Dave...you're one of a kind...🎸🙂
The kinks are the best
god save the kinks! good to see dave ready to rock again!
I love Dave so much! I wish he would do another biographical book as a follow-up to 1997's KINK. I strongly recommend it if you hadn't read it.
Sean Coleman You are right, Sean.
Love his solo in "Live Life" ! Not to forget the intro (live version) of "Celluloid Heroes".
Funny watching these youngsters struggling and wondering how to behave in the presence of rock and roll royalty.
Seems a really nice guy

He's a real trouper!!
Seems a really nice chap
Looking back at the many concerts I've seen, the kinks were one of the best live shows.I always loved the music.
Honestly, I don't think Jagger and Richards were great songwriters. They made hits but didnt really innovate.
I absolutely agree with your assessment if The Kinks. They were both revolutionary and rebellious, and were a huge impetus o the so called "British Invasion" of rock and pop groups that came to America to perform. Feckin legend

Dave looks more and more like Ray now.
=Sounds= like him, too. (Or like Ray =used= to sound.)
I just know I love his music. Sorry about the stroke. So BBC is the only TV there? Good luck! 😉
He was very careful what he said about Ray, showed a lot of class. 😎
Good to see you again Dave !
I love him more! ;))
that's really good!
I agree. Some family members never fully get on.
I wish that America wouldn't have banned the band during the most important time of Rock History. It's really too bad that Ed Sullivan never asked them on his show. If they had made several appearances, such as The Beatles and The Stones, then perhaps the Kinks would have been just as large!
Saw him in Boston. He was fantastic.
uk or us?
Legend!

I miss the period this was uploaded. Actually i wish I could live through the 60's...
How dare the interviewer cut Mr. Davies off in mid-sentence!
Great to see he has recovered and performing again, now you and your brother kiss & make up before it is too late, don't take this grudge to your grave!
+brotzmannsax His brother's a fuckin' egotistical genius prick!
+Michael Dubin Ah, so you know Ray personally.
+Michael Dubin I think you should have said 'His brother's a fuckin' genius' and left it at there whilst you were still right
Hope the kinks reunite soon as they are great and blood is thicker than water.
It is 2021. Any new Kinks album forth coming? Dave traveled to England a few years ago and Ray and Dave were writing together. What became of it? Two bass players died, a keyboard player died. Some Kastoff Kinks still around.
Lovely guy
Top chap!
yes he is :)
AND SCREW THE BBC FOR DISMISSING DAVE
A superband!
Great Kinks tracks.
cool, thanks
i fucking LOVE Dave.Crying shame he and Ray have such a bitter relationship which has apparently not improved with age :(
The Kinks are dead... no hope!
but they will never die whilever i have their albums and a stereo :) :) :)
When The Kinks died, a few people really cared.
Ironic to see a demand for a reunion. :)
yes.I am happy to just play their recrords in my house, personally. But nice if the boys could work out their shit coz they are brothers at th end of the day.Still,i empathise.I have 2 brothers and one is dead and i don't speak to the other coz he is a psychotic arsehole.

Strangers is as good as anything Ray wrote . Meant as a compliment to Dave not a shot at Ray .
It's driving me nuts - he (the talking head) keeps calling Strangers new material. Dave is kind enough not to correct him.
But he does correct him! Dave forgets which album though. Lola vs the Money-Go-Round (1970).
where's this man's CBE? 7 years since the interview and nothing.
You do wish the anchors would do a bit more research. Some of those questions were embarrassing.
A really nice bloke.
Love Dave. Real pity about the inept interviewers.

not exactly new material
He sounds like Julia Child.
bbc needs more people to intervew same drab faces every day give em another job charlie is such a bore nagge the rest of the team, all thease years hello bbc we need a different breakfast its a bore make changers.
a
like the kinks, quality of songwriting was very good ...artistically behind The Beatles and The Beach Boys ( at their best) but not by much.
+Kevin Higgins In many ways they were miles ahead of both. Let's face it though, a world without the Kinks would be distinctly less appealing.
Kevin Higgins-
remember, they never had a genius like George Martin to help them!!
i wish he'd cut his hair. i hate this look.
These questions have me cracking up.
