Been a subscriber for 3-4 years. My 04 Taco parking brake cable broke this week and I look and my favorite UA-camr has a video that will help me from 8 years ago. Awesome. 😊
New subscriber here, appreciate all your attention to detail and not taking the easy way out. Former military here and feel like you may have been as well with your detail and work ethic. Look forward to watching more. On my 3rd Tacoma btw and they have been great trucks for me.
That console comes off two bolts under the carpet, and two phillips screws attaching to the shifter plastic console. A lot of room, and goes back togther perfect. Thanks for walk through of the job!
We're getting spoiled with all of these frequent videos. I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into making them. Great entertainment plus techniques and tools to add to my tool box.
Michael Herbert Hey I can help fill the box and empty the wallet :)
South Main Auto Repair LOL
You probably dont give a shit but does someone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot the password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Connor Korbin Instablaster ;)
@Kenzo Tanner I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
wow you do take pride in your work that is nice to see.
I appreciate watching and learning...educating oneself to understand what it takes in effort and treasure to maintain a vehicle and particularly in this case, the parking cable replacement, ...the bitter medicine ( repair bill estimate ) is easier to take !
As always, thanks for taking the time to share this Eric!!
you helped me adjust it just enough to unstick the brake from the cold and make it back to my parking spot from being stuck in the middle of the road!! :D thank you!
I really appreciate your channel, when I was removing the bolts on top of frame, it was seized, so I figured out where it was from the top, drilled a 1-1/2" just above the bolt on the frame an placed a rubber body plug back in the hole, so "if" this repair needs to be done again it won't be a PIA.
HOPE This helps someone down the line.
Very nice work Eric and good attention to details. Keep up the good work!
stuzman52 Hey Terry thanks a lot, I'll give it my best :)
I like how you cleaned and lubed the critical areas, because most shops DON'T do this! Your a true professional.
jake ounce What are the right parts to lube? I didn't lube anything when I did my first drum brakes. Maybe you can point out what I didn't quite get from the video? Thanks in advance.
DE Nichols Where the shoes rub against the Backing Plate should be lubed to keep friction down. of course cleaning the assembly first is a good idea. Sorry it took a while to respond!
jake ounce
Sweet. I'm nuts on MPG and every little thing helps. :) (That's my original hobby that eventually made me a pro.)
No worries about some time prior to response, it was worth the wait...2 drum brakes later I didn't do that, but hey, learn with experience, lol.
Cool story on the Scrambler. I enjoy the commentaries along the way too.
+wyattoneable Sure do miss that old jeep :)
some how i missed this one, it feels like xmas !
Hey man... I love watching your vids!!!! Great work, always!!
Thanks sneaks01
Thanks for the video. My 2012 are broken. Found when doing the rear shoes. Will get some cables and do them myself now
Another excellent video. You gave all of the crucial information without boring everyone to death. One thing I'd be interested in learning about is how you decide to bill these jobs. I know there are book values but most jobs seem to involve extra work or unanticipated problems.
Jeffrey Cardimen Well I bill on flat rate for the initial job (the cable R&R's) then additional stuff like clean and adjusting brakes just bill an hourly wage on and beyond the flat rate charge if time exceeds it.
24:31 - brake clean via a garden hose - what a great idea! Thanks for the video
Eric, in the video previous to this one where you started this job you talked about owning your own business and some customers telling you what to do as you are a poor businessman. You mentioned you own your own home, shop, cars etc. I feel for you as we own a small business too and never fails that somebody else is trying to tell you how to run your business. Just ignore those idiots. Keep doing what you do my friend and everything will be fine.
Hi! Oh my god, thank you for putting this up. Now I don't feel like such a shlub for having this done at the dealership, and not doing it myself. It's winter here in Indiana, it's cold, wet, I'm sick with a chest cold, I don't have a lift and would have to do this on my back in my garage, and I'm a 59 year old scrawny broad. I've done lots of auto maintenance in my time, including a VW overhaul or two, so I'm no stranger to the dirt, grease, and busted knuckles. I bought this 2006 Tacoma stick at the end of Sept. 2018, and when I went to pick it up at the dealership, it took 3 guys to get the e-brake released. That should have set off a mental alarm at that time. Watching you work on this thing restored my faith in the fact that there are at least some mechanics out there that raise their work to the level of an art form. It was a thing of beauty, and therefore, a joy forever. Keep on keepin' on.
nice i like the detail you put into the work. i wish to bring my car in some day from Canada :)
Just head Southeast and you'll get here...
Great videos brother,,you remind me of myself in the shop,,,keep them coming,,,huge thumbs up from ireland,,
Hey Irish Man welcome aboard :)
SMAR You're a smart man. I'm not talking about this repair necessarily, I expected you'd do a good job, I'm talking about in general. You've come up in video production quality to be par with other pro's doing it longer really fast. Of course I learned. I try to have this attitude. There's not too small of a video topic to learn off of when someone experienced is talking. Thank you.
DE Nichols Forgot to say something. If it's your catch phrase to say, "Remember. If I can do it, you can do it.", good choice. :)
DE Nichols Well thanks. We'll keep pluggin away at it an see where it ends up :)
My 2009 has about 94k and the hand brake just started to act funny last week. It seems like it's having trouble disengaging. I don't have any hills to park on so I've just been leaving it in 1st, but my inspection is due this month. Luckily I work at a farm with a lift in the toolshop so maybe I can do this myself if it's needed thanks to your video. Looks like replacement cables are about $55 each. I like the comment about mentioning how long the process takes at the end of the video.
The thing I remember about drum brakes is when you got them wet you were in for an exciting ride.
Maybe the bottom has fluid film!
I never knew about that product till I saw you use it, and we have it here in Palmdale Ca at Lowe's! WOW! Who knew! We don't have the weather like you, but I know there's places that I can use it similar to WD-40 use. Great Video!
Great video your a true proffesional at work
Thansk Luis Martel
Dang I do the needle vise grips on the springs trick too. I thought I was the only genius! Great video though, who knew it was possible to make videos about things like parking brake cables funny and interesting? Lol
Dan.vaku Shoot I'll record anything and try to make it fun :)
Thanks for posting. This helped me out.
Fun one to watch. Glad I was watching.
Thanks for the vid, it was a big help.
I love your advice about drum brakes.. Only do one side at a time.. Yeah, I made that mistake.
ONCE!!!
Nice IR hammerhead. I love mine, one of the best tools I ever bought. I never even touch my air ratchet anymore.
***** Air ratchet collects dust here too
South Main Auto Repair You guys need to try out an impacting air ratchet. Best of both worlds. HF sells a really good one in their Earthquake line for $50 with a coupon which is full sized. K&E and SP Tools out of Japan make a very small one that's the size of a small 1/4" air ratchet that easily puts out 50 foot-pounds. This is the killer tool of killer tools. OH I FORGOT. You're suppose to do everything with a Crescent wrench and a pair of pliers, MY BAD.
Great job Eric, i think a cool thing to add in yours videos at the end is how long it took to do the job so it gives us some perspective on a professionals time! cheers
poodlebreathe Oh ok good thinking :)
Another job well done.
Luigi Torchia Thanks :)
That Tacoma is in amazing shape so little rust for it being a new your vehicle Eric O looks good on the video @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Just wanted to take a minute to say Thank You for putting yours Videos up on YouTub'!
I work as a Fleet Mec' for a County down here in Ohio and deal with 99% of the same kind of repairs that you are doing AND the Big Trucks. A 50/50 thing! Lol.. Keep it up Bro'.. " You Can Do It" ,, I Can Do It,, Any one can do it if they try. Hamilton County Ohio .Fleet Mechanic George C
Hey George, Good to hear from a fellow mechanic. I use to work in a heavy diesel shop too. Did everything from in-frames, bulk body installs, injectors, cams, air bags, camel backs, walkin beams, frame stretching, cab swaps the whole bit. Ughhh the nightmares lol
Yep',, Do all of that every day. And "Yep" Hybrids vehicles too. I seen your Videos about 2 weeks ago and have been watching all of them on the good old Apple' TV. and i have all my Mec's watching your videos now!! ScannerDanner kind of stop making to many videos any more and the County Rules say i can 'NOT" make videos at work using County Cars/Trucks/Equipment! So its sooooo cool to see some one other then myself and my Mec's doing this kind of work. Half Mechanic Half IT' person.. Thanks Again!! If there is any thing i can help you with? Email me at craigmile@Peoplepc.com.
Wow I am a celebrity in OHIO Cool haha Maybe I can do one running a rack on a Cat or overhaul on a C15 haha
I Fluid Film my Taco frame and lower components twice a year. Makes a world of difference.
Jason Michaels Love the fluid film myself.
excellent! you saved me some headaches!
i used to do them like 10 a month at toyota dealership. for them to last a little bit longer, i usually bend the bracket on the leaf spring a little bit down to release some tensions.
Eric someday when I grow up I wanna be just like you
Only thing lacking is lying in the dirt doing this. The hands are epic and I fully understand.
wow remembering my very 1st drum brake job my sister had a 10 year old amc gremlin all rust underside she barely had the money for parts so I said sure I'll do it for you. front went good the rears was a 1 day and a half of hammering cussing busting knuckle and breaking off bolts what a lightmare that was.
This cable setup looks more traditional than the previous gen Tacomas with the bare cable running across the rear axle connecting the two sides. On that design the pivots and wheel actuators are notorious for seizing up...but usually salvageable :) Oh and I'm a big fan of drum brakes on the rear axles of trucks and SUVs. Like you said pretty much maintenance-free, plus the handbrake is 10 times more effective since it uses the main shoes, and not some dinky disposable ones on the inside of the disc lol
That's what I'm saying, What ever happen to them? I love drums !
I think "4-wheel disc brakes" i supposed to sound modern and high-performance when the salesman is trying to get sell you a car at the dealership haha...stupid marketing
I does sound catchy lol
motoYam82 Yep, only reason it's a "good idea" moves products. Elsewhere in these comments someone was saying the new GM products have drum brakes again. They were wondering why...didn't have the heart to tell them....because customers got sick of emergency brakes good enough for a car, but it's on a truck?!? Dangerous.
thanks for this good information...
Have you tried the black venom ones and double them up seem to work pretty good like that
I definitely won't shed a tear the day drum brakes become extinct.
i will shed a tear. because i charge more to do the job.
I prefer drums in some cases, like a truck with a manual transmission because the parking brake will actually hold the truck.
Old comment, but drums will never die out. Toyota still uses them because they provide better braking power than disc.
I never minded drum brakes. Worst was the time to get the drums cut on the lathe.
For the front, disc brakes rule. But on the rear... Don't dismiss drums too quickly. They lend themselves nicely to parking brakes.
Thanks for the video.
I love the Michael Jackson impression trying to put those brakes back on. "Shamone". :)
I know it sounds crazy, but the 9 mil gloves from harbor freight are pretty good, and pretty affordable.
James Barcellano Yeah people are saying to get the 9mils...
James Barcellano Got my nitrile glove there. Color me impressed. Sure they only last a few minutes in gasoline, but what do you expect? They hold up against oil longer than other gloves by a long shot.
@@SouthMainAuto I didn't wear glover for 25 years because I couldn't get the tips of my fingers all the way in to the finger holes. So then I couldn't pick up little things like washers. Now I keep a travel size container of powder with my box of gloves. A light coating on my hands and the gloves go on with no issue, and all the way.
Nice to see you using quality replacement bolts on the backing plate. None of those pot metal bolts they sell at the hardware stores.
Rockfords :)
Thank god you got to do this on shoes and drum that were bedded in. New drums and shoes would likely not have held the truck in place with the emergency brake, and would of needed bedding in first.
Concerning the undercoat, I lived in Elmira, NY for a year and had my truck undercoated with a Z-Bart system. They sprayed the underside, drilled holes in channels, sprayed inside and plugged the holes. It really looked good and also greatly reduced road noise.
Unfortunately Ziebart often does more harm than good. It can easily seal IN moisture and salt and make things rust faster. I've gone with a lanolin-based undercoat for my new truck, I used Surface Shield, but Fluid Film and Woolwax are also good.
Did a great job on that toyota. Toyota vehicles can be a pain to work on sometimes lol.. Parts are high too. I've seen some discusting things in my customers cars over the years lmao!!
Adam Lenning Oh yeah some days I put in a seat cover for my own protection....
I honestly don't blame you lol
i like that light you use, magnetic? just stick it on the frame and aim where you want to see....need to get me one of these
why dont you have more subscribers all of your videos are really good
UBBERTANKER Because u don't tell your friends!? No prolly because they are long and only interest a select group of mechanically minded people.
South Main Auto Repair I like your second reason better, because I did tell my friends. :)
You are fun to watch. My tacoma is waiting to have the brake cable job done and I hope the guy or girl doing the job puts at least as much knowledge and good cheer into the job. Thanks.
LOL! I think it's funny you use brake clean for everything but the brakes!
Wow that hand brakes system is just like the one on my 1973 Lotus Europa. Just like you I use acid brushes from Harbor Freight along with a magnetic bar to store the brushes when not in use. I have use 4 brushes;
1. Never seize
2. Caliper grease
3. Silicone Grease
4. Wheel Grease
Marketing did away with drum brakes. I remember growing up when both front and rear were drum brakes. Disc brakes are great for front, but I rather have drum brakes in the rear. Great video as always, thanks for bringing us along.
The undercoating is for toyota's recall. They clean and spray the frames with the undercoating, or if the frame has a hole, we replace them. It seems like the undercoating takes looong time to dry
***** Oh got ya, boy looks like really good stuff :)
***** A recall for how many models, just the trucks?
Not 100% sure
Man I freaking love drum brakes. For the first like two years in this field, I was just using a multi-tool, a large screwdriver and a pair of vice grips to do them, dead serious. Of course that was before I had money, now I am spoiled. At least those top mounted bolts did not snap off, oh boy, that would be fun. LOL, complaining about his brushes, is this a shop or a beauty salon?
Beauty Salon!? Hey now I have painted Trinity's nails in the shop before soooooo....
South Main Auto Repair Nice...question is, what did she paint on you? If there's too much information involved, I don't even want to know, haha.
Lol my boys would say they would put me in a punching bag haha, it comes from growing up I told them if they wear ear rings, long hair and paint there nails they will get turned into punching bags in school haha, now they think the punching bag is something you get into
Nice you get the easy one where the axle isn't covering all the hardware.. was hoping for some pointers, but all I seemed to get were.. well I could have left that bolt out..
I am currently doing this job. My 13 year old Tacoma living in Canada did not release the bolts as easily. I broke 5 bolts, and had to drill out those top frame ones. Now I have a question that I didn't see how you did. I also hooked up the cables before hooking them into the equalizer, but have now unhooked again but still can't get the cables onto the equalizer. It's a tomorrow problem now before I start throwing tools. Beer time!
Hi Eric, try the orange Tiger Grip gloves, they are very good...
Hi, any time I work on or disturb drum brakes the wheel cylinders tend to come back leaking.
fix one thing break something else lol
Oh no kidding hmmm...
Needs to install front e brake on dodge caravan 02 (new cable is same as original )pls help
These style drums are on most of toyota models I'm so used to doing these brake jobs everyday just easy memory function for me Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
The hat's back!
U betya!
SADLY
OH STOP! Lol
That NAPA coffee cup has seen a long life ... try some brake clean ... 😆
How do you adjust emergency brake cable in a 2010 Toyota Tundra It will not hold. I do like your shows.
Just found the channel, as I may need to do this---or have it done. IDK how you do the job so eloquently---- Normally very second word is usually profane, when trying to fix my vehicles.
I crawled under my truck Sunday, and found a pair of needle nose vicegrips clamped to my emergency brake cable.
No, they weren't.
Now they are...
good video
Thansk carlos favela
Harbor Freight, 7mil dark blue nitrile gloves. They hold up pretty well; better than anything else I've ever used. They also have a 9mil super heavy duty version in black, but I find they're just too thick to do little finicky things with. Give 'em a shot if you haven't already, and tell me what you think! :)
Will a Tite-Reach 3/8” extension help? If you don’t have one, I’ll send you one.
Nice! Job
i have a 2006 toyota sequoia limited with air bags. how to replace parking Disc brakes
"....Never even knew we were here".
LOL
Show Me What I Need To Know Like a ninja...
Detailed video with nice camera angles and lighting.Sister in law with a ford p0420 came vsiting.O2 sensors seemed working ok.Your thoughts on what might cause this code from your own experience.I am not a mechanic myself, more of a diyer but thought I might help out.
That sounds like a bad catalytic converter,I'm afraid... :(
But let's wait and see what the doctor has to say... 👍
Tom OConnor More than likely what Nick Nicu said... could be the converter
South Main Auto Repair thanks for the info. The car is a 1.25 l with 110k miles.I advised her to use injector cleaner in the gas in the hope it might make the engine run smoother and maybe get rid of the code.In hindsight, it might not make a lot of difference.
P0420's are usually straight forward, just should find the cause as to what ruined the converter in the 1st place..
South Main Auto Repair Yep, unless the cause is making the computer read the situation wrong, these repairs usually come in 2 parts.
At 21.00 mins in, is that leaf spring missing a band? Seems to be imo
Eric, I was worried, you were doing a brake job and the brake cleaner didn't come out until 25:00. I thought you were going to go 'cold turkey'! Greetings from the land of Oz
Looks like the rear brake shoes are getting pretty close as well!
You miss that Jeep like I miss my 69 Camaro I built in High School Auto Shop :(
+RareDiamond Ching Yeah.... Mrs.O wheres my Jeep on her finger now... I guess priorities change!
Was that black stuff gear oil?
36:40 way to bury the best advice in the video lol
Eric, You never cease to amaze me with all your Do-Da's. I lov that right angle impact gun. I am like you, I take care of my tools ( some would say obsessively ), I have tools that I have not used in 20 years, but if you asked me if I had a particular tool such as distributor wrench for a old 60s -70s ford, I could go right to the exact drawer, cabinet or shelf in less than ten seconds to retrieve it. But when it comes to my screw drivers, I abuse the living P*SS out of them like you. They are so tempting to use as a chisel ,punch, scraper, pry bar, and anything in between! LOL!
Also dude, I don't want to sound like I have twenty-twenty vision in hindsight, but I must, because when you were hooking the cables up from the rear, I was saying to myself, Oh Eric, your going to struggle with the adjuster inside! I was please to see you didn't to much!
If your wondering why I am commenting so late from the date you posted you vid. it's because I like following you and your channel and I don't always get a chance to watch the vids right away so I just leave them in my inbox and watch when I get a chance! Anyway great vid, keep e'm coming! Take Care!
Billy R Hey thanks for watching Bill :) I do like my tools too haha but I agree those screw drivers get "hammered" to say the least. Any how the videos are there for you to watch and comment when ever you like :)
South Main Auto Repair Thanks, Have a good one!
Billy R I didnt think of the obvious using a hammer drill (or was that an impact wrench?) to vibrate rusted-on, stuck rotors losser! Eric's two hammer method is OK, and I used it since I dont have a compressor yet, but I like your way.
Hay SMA do you have a video on a Toyota Tacoma timing belt v6. Thanks in advance.
another great video. good to see views going up, hopefully you earn money from these one day and don't sell out completely and just talk about stuff. I think you know who i'm talking about haha
Some random person Lol well I like to talk but I'd rather work ya know...
Been watching your channel for a month or so now. You do great work. It's nice to see a fellow tech that takes pride in his work! How do you like the hammerhead rachet?
Hey Jonathan Milbury welcome aboard :) Oh yeah I love that tool. In one of the Subaru videos I pull lug nuts off with it :)
South Main Auto Repair Cool, I've been thinking about getting one. I've been learning lots from your videos, I'm about to go into the independent world after working at a GM dealer for the last 12 years so your videos are helping me see what its like. Keep up the great work!!
Nice video. Can we have a toolbox tour soon or not your thing? Thanks.
Oh it's coming soon my friend.
Omg I can't believe you put the brakes back together with the cables not connected inside. You had a good idea leaving the drums off, but a little too late lol. Better to have left the cables off back there and the brakes all apart too while you hooked it up inside, then put the brakes back together like a normal brake job would go.
did you just create raw metal that will now rust and put no paint back on the backing plate in the salt belt
I use anti cease like a ritual on any new repair, or if I have done the repair more than a couple times.
on the bench seat models you have to pull the front seat out.
Is this the sane Tacoma you did the leaf spring on Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
24:30 satisfying seeing that crap come off.
***** Oh yeah ya gotta clean it up :)
Hey erick.just a question. .have toyota corolla.rear drum ebrakes lever all the way dont hold the car stop just a little..can make the brake pedal all the way down ?..there is no leaks and the car stops..
Stenio Fernandez Let me get this right. The regular pedal brakes are fine but the E-brake does not work?
Yeap..
I would pull the drums, clean and adjust the rear shoes then readjust the cable if needed after that.
Let me get this straight..ebrakes can make the regular brake pedal gose all the way down..but the stops.cus i change the master cylinder and dindt make any difference later i check the ebrake i notice they not strong enough to stop the car..
A e brake can not make the regular brakes fail but mis-adjusted drum brakes will make both not work. Make sense?
Can you direct me to your video you keep referencing when you looked at this Toyota Tacoma previously? thx....
Jake Swan Do you have a time stamp when I was referring to it?
South Main Auto Repair Rough at 0:15, and at another point a few minutes in (still looking for it....)
Oh it was actually in the "One Hour Special Video" ua-cam.com/video/pmUmsf0WgeI/v-deo.html
I've been using a slotted screwdriver to get to the bottom of the anti-seize, I never thought of cutting the container, I will next time. That shows I'm not a pro.
Black and forever sticky undercoat... Could be Hammerite Waxoyl maybe?
I think putting all of the stuff back into the cup holders says a lot about mechanics being able to remember the right order of things. Things come out in a certain order and have to go back in the same way after repair. The fact that you remembered the sequence of the cup holder items says a lot about your attention to detail. It's still kind of funny though. :)
Lol I hope he doesn't see his cupcake wrapper is out of place though :/
***** What I do, is right after removing the cup holder, I would immediately put all the items back in it...my memory can be "foggy" at times, gotta leave yourself some clues along the way.
jarin wilson or in this case probably could have gotten away with removing the cup holder with everything still in it. you won't know how easy it will come up sometimes and make everything fly in the air. I can do it on my own car without needing to remove anything but I know the exact amount of pressure needed because it's my car.
***** Yeah, and you might not know what came flying out, until you are tasting it, lol. Do you need to wear a welding hood/helmet just to remove personal items from a person's vehicles? I would hope not...
Mmmm Yummy! Cupcake wrapper and sticky stuff :)
