    Waterman and Sheaffer are nice bright reds. For the darker red, Diamine Oxblood is it.

    Thank you Dave for your second installment in the red inks comparison. I've purchased Akkerman DM Scharlaken van Jan Steen following the first comparison, and I'm writing with it today. I will definitely add Diamine Matador to the list of inks to check in my search for a replacement for MB Corn Poppy Red.

      Hope you're liking Sharlaken Van Jan Steen, I find it a nice red. I was lucky recently to buy another 3x bottles on top of the 1.5 bottles I still have of MB Corn Poppy Red, it's one I really do like. I'm sure though there are others that could easily replace it over time, I think Diamine Poppy Red could potentially for me.

    Another lovely bunch of reds, some of which made me want to buy lipstick! Love the Akkerman DM Rembrandts Karmozijn and the De Atramentis Deep Water Obsession, although I'm with you that that is more of a purple than a red. Diamine Matador is superb, too. I'm waiting on some cartridges of Graf von Faber-Castell India Red to try out and compare to my existing reds.

    Thanks Dave, do keep up the good work :) It's really helpful, I have some of these and it's good to see a comparison and have a better idea about the ones I don't have. I love reds and I consider them business-environment friendly. I take meeting notes regularly using red ink.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one that takes meeting notes with red ink! Sometimes I will write pages just in red ink and other times I'll maybe write in a blue or green ink and use a red or orange ink as a highlighter for specific words or annotations to make them standout more. I never quite understand why some people avoid red inks, I always here the story about kids being horrified in school if their papers were marked with red inks, but to me the beauty about this hobby is that we have so many colours to choose from, it would be a shame to limit ourselves just to blue, blue/black or black.

    Thanks for this Dave - reds are (for me) the hardest colour to find what I'm looking for - I don't mind darker reds, but finding a 'bright' red that doesn't skew pink and isn't undersaturated is a challenge. Diamine Wild Strawberry is one that fits the slot for me (I know you've covered that in Comparison #1) - more recently though I bought a bottle of Montblanc Poppy Red (my only Montblanc ink!), and found it was another bright, "true red" ink. Might have to look into Waterman Audacious Red and/or KWZ Thief's Red - if I can find an Australian distributor for the latter!

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому

      Have you tried Diamine Poppy Red? That is a more vibrant brighter red than Wild Strawberry, if you compare the two side by side then Wild Strawberry looks a little more pastel. The only issue I've had with Diamine Poppy Red is that in a couple of very wet nibs I have had some feathering but most pens I put it in have not had any issues, this was on Rhodia paper. Montblanc Corn Poppy Red is a great ink, but if you like it you may want to get another bottle because it's now "end of life" and Montblanc are not making it anymore. I believe it's been replaced with Burgundy Red or Modena Red, neither I like as much. KWZ Thiefs Red is definitely a lovely red, I find Waterman Audacious Red a little more faded in pens when writing.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 3 роки тому

      I was going to suggest Poppy Red, too. Though I also like Noodler's Cactus Fruit, Monteverde Ruby, and Monteverde Fireopal for their bright red property.

    I love your ink comparisons! Though reds are not my favourite - and I have yet to define what I consider "red" because there are so may tonalities and I find it difficult to determine the cut-off point between orange-red, red, pinkish red, burgundy, maroon, red-brown - I like J. Herbin Rouge Grenat quite a lot. On white TR 52 gsm and Rhodia DotPad with 1911L H-F, H-MF, H-M, H-B (my F, MF and B are wetter than my M), it's dark, saturated, chromatic, has some shading. I like JH Rouge Bourgogne, but that's more of a blue-leaning pink (+/- fuchsia), unsaturated but bright, yet easy to read. Maybe Rouge Grenat could be defined as a browner version of Diamine Syrah, or a redder version of Rustic Brown? It's somewhere in between.

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому

      Thanks Chiara! Definitely the cut-off point between one colour and another colour is quite a fine line and different for many people. For me I tend not to like pinkish reds as much or maroon or burgundy strangely although FC Sweet Maroon I do like. Strangely although I don't like a pinkish red, I do like some hot pinks like Pilot Iroshizuku Tsutsuji or even Diamine Amaranth. Diamine Syrah I'm also not keen on for some reason. One thing I have found is that I have a lot (and I mean a lot) of Tomoe River 52gsm in both White and Cream and I do notice that inks change colour slightly depending on which colour paper I write on.

    I love and use all the Waterman inks, including Audacious Red, and it falls in at number in my top five red inks list. It's just a red ink I grab when I want, well, an ordinary red ink. Diamine Terracotta is an ink I feel I should like more than I actually do. Oddly, I seldom use it except when I need to use cartridges because I know I'll have to change inks when on the run. Then I always take two or three of these cartridges with me. But I almost never touch the bottle of Terracotta ink I have.
    Diamine Matador falls in and out of my favorite red inks list on a regular basis. So often that I should probably call it my "sixth man" red ink. I really do like it, and I use it often, but there always seems to be some new red ink that keeps Matador out of the top five.

      That's an interesting video Peter, I can probably do that!

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 3 роки тому +2

      I could do so with blue, black, and red easy enough. I know it's an uncommon choice, but Lamy would be my blue ink. Noodler's Heart of Darkness would be my black ink, and Diamine Red Dragon would be my red ink. Right now, green would go to Monteverde Yosemite Green, and purple would go to De Atramentis Purple Violet. Pink would be Waterman Radiant Pink. Gray would be Noodler's Lexington gray. Orange would go to Private Reverse Orange Crush.
      Give me a month or two, and all of these might change.
      My problem would come with inks I don't know where to put. A very new favorite of mine is Montblanc James Purdey & Sons Single Malt scented ink. I absolutely love the color, but does it go in gold, yellow, or where?
      And while Yosemite Green is definitely my top green, I love Iroshizuku Chiku-rin, which is a very light bamboo green. If I could do a dark green and a light green, I'd have an easier time of it. Same with the other colors.

    • @peterpuleo2904
      @peterpuleo2904 3 роки тому

      @@jamesaritchie1 Thank you for such a comprehensive answer. Your are more decisive, and experienced, than I am in these choices. I readily agree with you on Heart of Darkness for black. I would select Monteverde California Teal for green I suppose, and Waterman Mysterious Blue, and Noodler's Tanzanite for closest to purple. For all other colors, I would lean toward Waterman and Parker as they perform well for me in every pen. For blue/black I like the color of Noodler's 54th Massachusetts, but it dries out on my nibs rather quickly so it will remain on the bench.

    Quick question: shading. Has it any affect on the pen you use or just the aesthetic on paper?
    Also (thought it was 1 question) Sheening same question for this as well.
    The sheening are very fantastic however it simply looks like they will be troublesome afterwards.... or if you’re the type to leave an ink sitting in your pen with out a long period of time....

    • @PenultimateDave
      @PenultimateDave  4 роки тому +1

      Shading, typically is a tendency of the ink but you also want a wet writing nib to show the shading more.
      Sheening is the same, you will see more the wetter the ink is on the page, but also sheening will only happen on ink resistant paper like Tomoe River more. Sheening ink has more dye concentration so it can be harder to clean out of some pens.

      The Burgundy Red is pretty nice and performs quite well. I'm using it with a medium nib that writes like a fine and I need to try it in something more substantial to really see its full potential. I really like Noodler's inks since they are a great value and have some very quirky performers. You will sometimes run into one that is overly pungent, like "North African Violet". When I was complaining about it on one of his videos Nathan informed me that it was intentional and made to smell like a brand of ink called Carter's. If that company was still making ink I sure wouldn't be buying any, lol.
      I see Pure Pens has 10% off on Noodler's right now, although you guys are paying more for it. Some of the colors I like are Navajo Turquoise, Squeteague, Navy, Tiananmen and Army. They appear to have colors we don't have over here. Just be careful with those bottles because they are filled to the brim and are an accident waiting to happen.

I actually prefer that over the older smell but I know a lot of people don't like the vanilla type smell.

    300 inks.... I would suggest two things:
    (Of course you maybe already doing these things)
    Spreadsheet: color category distribution through out the week and month. This will help you through your rotation of color pallets. Ive dialed down my colurs to four (I have 11-12 inks now so i can easily rotate throughout the week....it works well)
    the other suggestion.....
    Sell some off in sample vials........ there are some serial ink changes out there that would be enthused and willing to acquire some off of you.
    Again, just some suggestion to help you go through your mountain of inks..... which is quite impressive feat!
    Id be a patron of some of your sample vials, unfortunately, you and I are in different continents and the arrival of delivery is a killer of my patience. (im still waiting for a new pen from January.....kinda wanna refund but still holding on)
