In todays video I discuss whether CGI is getting worse.
#cgi #movies #moviereview
In recent years I've noticed a dip in quality in CGI, resulting in many digital creations that feel very unreal. In this video, I explore why that may be. Please comment below if you know more about CGI and can answer the questions posed in this video
Despite its cripplingly low budget of only 30 million dollars, District 9 was the first film of its kind - Having mind blowing visual effects - which ranged from full CG characters to dynamic weapon effects.
However, with District 9 coming out in 2009 - it meant that the film always existed in the shadow of another major CGI film release that Year: 2009’s Avatar, by James Camereon.
With Avatar being a Goliath success; District 9’s incredible CG and VFX achievements were largely passed over and the film was never given the praise it deserved for changing the way Hollywood approaches its VFX production.
So, with the release of Avatar 2, I thought it was time that we cast a light back on District 9 and explored exactly why this film looks so good, how it did it on such a limited budget, and how it influenced the next decade of VFX.
Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?
“The Flash” ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon (“Bullet Train,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”), Ron Livingston (“Loudermilk,” “The Conjuring”), Maribel Verdú (“Elite,” “Y tu mamá también”), Kiersey Clemons (“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Sweetheart”), Antje Traue (“King of Ravens,” “Man of Steel”) and Michael Keaton (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Batman”).
“The Flash” is produced by Barbara Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”) and Michael Disco (“Rampage,” “San Andreas”). The screenplay is by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey,” “Bumblebee”), with a screen story by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Joby Harold (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Army of the Dead”), based on characters from DC. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Marianne Jenkins.
Joining director Muschietti behind the camera are director of photography Henry Braham (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “The Suicide Squad”), production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“IT Chapter Two,” “The Shape of Water”), editors Jason Ballantine (the “IT” films, “The Great Gatsby”) and Paul Machliss (“The Gentlemen,” “Baby Driver”), and costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”);

Alright so The Flash is sprinting into theaters in less than 2 months, but a couple days ago a bevy of news outlets, critics, and influencers were treated to an early screening of an almost complete version of the film at CinemaCon. This means a TON of new information about the film has hit the socials, so we here at Heavy Spoilers, are lacing up our tennies, and running straight into all of this new information.

The single most complex cgi model is from the 2009 transformers movie . This model is mafe up of 52,632 individual moving parts , 11716127 polygons and 6467 different textures. This one model takes up 32 gigabytes of disc space. For comparison, Iron man's most recent cgi iteration didn't even have 1/10 of that . Didn't even have 1/100th of that number .
The transformers movies honestly look insane. I've been watching them recently for the first time in preparation for rise of the beasts and they just look great

Teams need more time to make the movie. The MCU and Disney just pump out movies every couple of months so their teams are completely overworked, burnt out and have no time
Even actor like thor have burn out so yess
I hate the blurring motion shots. Or blurring backgrounds so all you can see is the actor talking more than the cgi being bad.
Yeah me too. Why do they even do that 😂
Quantity over quality, They choose to pick the easy cash instead of creativity.
Disney is pulling so many spinoff series out of their butt that they're having too budget cut.
So many people in these comments who know bugger all about how these movies are made, the politics and structures of the people involved, CGI isn’t worse than before, the studios just don’t invest into it enough, the VFX industry is on its knees right now because the film industry have created this narrative of movies and tv with CGI are bad. And BS posts like this feed the fire. It’s ridiculous.
Its insane the VFX backlash right now stemming from countless accounts who genuinely don't even use the right words to describe what they are talking about. The amount of times I see video essay creators call VFX comp shots CGI despite the fact that there was no CGI in the whole shot is crazy.
It’s even more crazy when you look at Transformers CGI
im sorry but Avatar's CGI was insane
Yes, he said that money and time was what was was lacking today, Avatar had both in ample supply so that is why it is so good.
@@Martian74 exactly, but for some reason he showed footage from avatar when talking about how bad CGI is getting
@@KilsE90
Because apparently it’s cool to hate Avatar, to the point where you have to lie and makeup shit just to show your passionate detest for it, like it’s box office and “poor CGI”.
I’ll say this: story wise, Avatar is a cliched and dull, but it has a lot of potential to expand its lore and maybe even expand its story to other characters within the Avatar universe. That’s why I am optimistic about it. Because unlike the majority of shitheads in this movie discourse, I actually see the positives and not stoop to the easy “let’s hate it for the ad revenue!”
@ulfberht4431 Meh. I guess if you're the "OoOoooo bright colors!" type of person, than sure, it was great. It didn't do much beyond that visually.
@@liamx6636 it didn't have JUST bright colors tho? im talking especially about the characters
It’s not just that, the number of pixels and frame rate has increased, meaning that it is harder to make cgi. Whereas before, some bad cgi could be redeemed by the fact that it didn’t show as much. If you take Star Wars, the remodelled versions on Disney plus have really bad cgi compared to when you play the original.
Yeah no its getting worse and it has nothing to do with pixels and everything to do with cheaply produced movies that come out 7months apart 😂
That definitely plays a factor. But in reality its a combination
Holup, how does resolution and frame rate make cgi harder? Those are just render settings. Plus the cinematic standard of 24fps has not changed. The real reason is lack of care from directors and producers. They think vfx is like popping their movie in the microwave. Whereas there was once a time where cgi was a point of pride and things were shot on set heavily considering the cgi, to help it look as good as it can.
@@MnrkbudzThe among of pixel does effect the CGI
One of my all time favorite movies is John Carpenters "The Thing" from 1982. The effects in that movie are a beautiful example of what effort/artistry were able to achieve before the prevalence of CGI. I hate that 40+ years later, the effects in most movies/shows are much worse than a 1982 horror film just because its cheaper to use bad CGI. @@atch300
Avatar: 🗿🍷
I'm just surprised it lasted this long, this is a recurring phenomenon. Star Wars, great visuals, other movies came along, improved on these new capabilities, then everyone got into it and it became slop.
Then the 90's happened , Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, all amazing visuals again, then garbage for a few years.
We've been in a pretty long streak now, Matrix back in 99, LotR, Harry Potter, the whole superhero franchise, literally 2 decades, aaaand back to garbage.
Companies are tying to rush their projects for money so the quality lowers over and over along the years
They should just chill and proceed with care
Dune 2 gave me hope that cgi can still become great again
Not only MCU movies, but I loved old Jurassic Park series. The dinos were so realistic that you cannot still differentiats if it is CGI or a model. Just respect to old movies👏👏👏
Agreed. One of the greatest of all time.
Do you think CGI is getting worse??? 👇👇
Yes
Yeag
Yea with the flash
Yes and for the same reasons video games are getting worse. Rushed development and money laundering.
Yes
Monsterverse cgi rn:🗿🗿🗿
Kinda crazy to think we went from a relatively small team of animators creating the first fully-CGI movie and it looking pretty damn good (at least for the time) to a big ass team with a million dollar budget not even being able to make the Flash run.
Think about this when I remember that one King Kong movie with the dinosaurs and massive bugs. That came out in 2005😂
The technology has gotten better but studios have gotten cheaper and more impatient. They want fast, cheap, and good, but unfortunately you can only pick 2 and studios don't care if it's good as long as it out there. The worst is when they put out borderline pre-viz in theaters then fix it before putting it on streaming (looking at you Disney).
I think Ultra HD is kinda to blame, when everything looks so vivid and clear, the effects are very easily distinguishable even with some of the best CGI movie moments
It’s just MCU and DC being shitty.
The cg for guardians 3 wasn't too bad
It more that studios want to cut costs and save their budget so they’ll hire the 2nd best in line in terms of CGI artists.
Calling all Transformers fans, this guy is saying the CGI is bad.
It’s not that CGI is getting worse, it’s Marvel and DC CGI that’s getting worse, other movies have looked fucking spectacular
Jurassic Park's 30 years old CGI 1 - MCU modern CGI 0
I have noticed this for 10 years.
When "The Terrifier 1 & 2 " came out it was old school 80's FX and the scariest Clown movie ever made to this day!
Like "A Nightmare on Elm Street."
Or the original STARWARS movies.
The cgi in the first decade fo this century were truly goated ❤❤
It's just that the good CGI is never noticed.
Because there is no good cgi
Blak Panther had alot of scenes that looked like they were from a netflix 3d animated series but would immediately have a scene that looked great
Not to mention that studios seem to be getting sloppier and worse at deciding what's going to be kept versus cut. Weeks will be spent on a sequence, just for it to be left on the cutting room floor. That time could've been spent finishing scenes that will actually be in the finished product.
Let's not watch them so the studios run out of money and start considering having less productions and therefore giving a break to the cgi artists and having them do a better work.
The CGI in the recent hulk film reminds me of GTA5
Godzilla Minus One 🍷🗿
I can’t wait to see it!
CGI will get better soon. Like you said, VFX teams are overworked.
Budget cuts
Short answer: no its just how people are utilizing it
2001: A Space Odessa has some of the most incredible SFX and VFX’s I have ever seen and it came out in the late 60s. That just shows how garbage movies have become
I blame Disney for trying to milk the MCU while Star Wars and live action remake projects are only just treated like extras.
The studios just dont care about quality anymore.
I would say usage of practice effect are getting less, all of them are preferring blue screen, not much practical sets , physical suits are used, they are just cutting production cost and putting heavy weightage on VFX.
Well it actually depends on the budget for the movie
As usual, Disney have saturated the market and pumped out mediocre movies just to peddle the merch.
I remember watching the all the later transformers movies and thinking the first one had better CGI.
The two examples of good cgi you showed aren't the most representative because one is insect-like creatures (which are especially easy to animate) and Pirates was so heavily stylized that suspension of disbelief was easy to achieve. The MCU has A LOT of humanoid cgi characters to juggle while avoiding the uncanny valley.
Kay im totally out of touch with movies, but when my bf put on Shang Chi on the TV one day, i honestly thought it was a tv production show because of how bad the CGI was. I didnt complain because i simply thought it was a TV movie. I then later found out it was an actual marvel movie, and it totally blew my mind how terrible and fake EVERYTHING looked. I was like, harry potter and Pirates of the Caribbean looked amazing, and they're from way back
Watched pirates of the Caribbean last week and thought exactly that
Meanwhile Bayverse Transformers: 🍷🗿
I noticed that all the modern CGI looks like foam.
The reason for this regression; Studios are hiring, not based on talent, experience, or merit, but for filling DEI quotas and highest number of identity boxes checked.
Glad to see Godzilla is still getting treated pretty well at least
CGI is not getting worse, it's getting way too good for people to notice 99% of all the CGI in movies and only notice the rushed 1% of the bad CGI.
No, I definitely notice every single thing is CGI green screen in modern films nowadays and they all look like trash
You can definitely notice if something is bad! But there are plenty of times when something is so good and seamless that trained professionals cannot tell the difference. However by very nature of being seamless we don't think about these shots much - but they are in pretty much every modern production.@@ciccnick

Its easy to see bad CGI. Its often impossible to recognize great CGI. CGi is a catch all term for people who know almost nothing about vfx.

And then we've got Bad CGI Gator that just outright embraces the bad CGI we're getting in all these movies.
TASM 2 was peak Spidey flick CGI wise.
So there's a whole UA-cam channel called CGY and he literally only talks about cinema from a VFX perspective. He covers both POTC and District 9 extensively. Watching his videos, it's not just because of greed CGI has gone down in quality, but also because of uncreativity and studio culture
correct. DEI culture is destroying these companies. All the "supervisors" and cgi "department directors" are all people who couldn't even model a cube in blender. They're 90% diversity hires now, because technically you don't "need" to know anything to be a supervisor... you can just control other people. But obviously this gives way to very poor results, inefficiency, and overworking. But HEY! You gotta jam female-hires in somewhere!
They went from quality to quantity.
Marvel is like games with actors
CGI tends to be an easy scapegoat for movies nowadays, but really the problem is that the stories and writing just aren’t good. Like they keep pumping these out while these VFX teams need to work with tighter and tighter deadlines, so of course they’ll have to cut some corners.
they know they can still make money with bad CGI and we are letting them get away with it.
Laziness
The thing thats wild to me, is that money supposedly talks, but most of these movies are only seen once in theaters vs multiple times like actual good movies. Studios want to pump out more to get more money quickly, but wouldnt it make more sense to make something worth seeing multiple times that would get recommend amongst friends?
It’s not just getting worse, it’s getting abused. Nowadays everything is just CGI… what happened to the miniature sets and practical effects???
Back then they layered it. Like they used practical effects as much as they could and filled the rest with cgi. Today its 100% cgi and the difference shows tremendously.

Very good commentary
Nothing is going to top Davy Jones when it comes to CGI.
Yes I do believe we all wanna know the answer to the same question that was just answered
I miss 90s effects. Luke star wars 3. The volcanic terrain fight....omg it is magnificent.
Terminator 2....just amazing effects.
90s movies just feel....better
One of the other main reason is viewer bias. Bad visual effects stand out but good visual effects are almost always seamless. Its ironic that we have some of the best visual effects of all time in movies that are frequently attributed to being practical - like top gun having over 2400 visual effect shots. There seems to be a large scale shift towards hating visual effects while audiences are getting more and more confident and understanding less and less about what actually happens behind the scenes.
The Dunning-Kruger effect audiences have been having concerning VFX and CGI recently is absurd.
Avatar the Way of Water - 🗿☕
There's really only one movie in the past 7 years that really wowed us all with its effects: Avatar 2. And we all know why: James Cameron gave the artists *enough time.* That's why it was delayed (besides covid).

There are many that have awesome vfx, but tell you there was no CGI.
anyone who was watching marvel movies in the first place doesn’t deserve better quality than this
the cost of practical effects went up so does the cost of good CGI.
ROTB cinematic scenes + CGI and Dark Of The Moon CGI action : allow us to introduce ourselves
They bring out about five each year, but 0 people really want them.
…why bring out so many!?
Now Marvel's fixing its mistakes
The reason is that movies over rely on the use of CGI. Reducing the practical effects/things that are used in sets.
She-Hulk is a TV series though....
It's because of budget.
The CG in Top Gun Maverick looked pretty good, but I wouldn't be surprised thats because it had a lot more time to spend in the oven because of the pandemic
if poor cgi meant poor ticket sales we'd see better cgi
CGI isn't getting worse, studios, executives, and deadlines are getting worse
And subsequently, CGI.
CGI hasn’t gotten worse. You’re just using examples of bad CGI. Top Gun Maverick’s CGI was so good you didn’t even notice it
CGI itself has been improved significantly. It looks faker now for a few reasons.
1. Picture resolution has improved significantly. It’s easier to spot an artificial imagery amongst real, tangible objects in a shot. The grain isn’t the same. The artificial shadow of a CGI character may be off by a few millimetres from where it should be in relation to where the sun is. The human eye instinctually picks up on these shall, subtle details.
2. The features of CGI characters are becoming more expressive and detailed as well as having more screen time in the story than ever before. The CGI technology for Gollum was limited; the artists made it work by focusing on the photography aspect of the shot. He’d often be in a frame by himself when he’s doing the most talking. He’d be disguised by the shadows or a misty fog. It’d be night. These tricks to obscure parts of him make all the difference. In 2006, it’d be impossible to generate Gollum doing the Macarena in New York in the middle of sunlight holding hands with humans. Today, CGI characters are simply making too many movements in good lighting; they’re imperfections are going to be noticed.
3. Lastly and most importantly, CGI is being used more than ever before for any place a special effect is needed. It’s being used in places where practical effects and stunt work were used a decade ago. It has often replaced practical effect crews all together.
In Dr. Strange, there’s no reason to CGI an eye on a forehead. That’s one of the easiest feats to do for a makeup department. That’s pure laziness.
Marvel CGI’s everything. They’d CGI a bruise. If they owned Joker, they’d CGI his face white.
Avatar took nearly a decade to complete. Marvel’s abundance of CGI would normally take years. They ship them out annually. So yes, part of the issue is visual artists don’t have Avatar time to proofread their work. The bigger issue, however, is that much CGI shouldn’t be used in the first place. CGI should only be a supplement to practical effects and stunt work.
What irks me is CGI blood. CGI blood is blasphemy and no film should ever use it. Compare Tom Savini/George Romero practical effect blood to CGI blood. Blood should always be real - real fake blood, I mean.
We also see this in video games. Compare Batman: Arkham Knight (2015) to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (2024). Same devs btw. You'll see what I mean
Man cgi always reminds me of the terminator movies: not the best but for the time they were amazing
Transformers CGI is still top dog
Cgi in transformers 🔥🔥🔥
It evolved.......just backwards......
Or the cgi artists deadlines got more unrealistic
