Disney Censorship / Myth Comparison: Black “Slave” Centaurs in Fantasia (1940)

- The black “slave” centaurs appeared in five shots of the original release of Fantasia (1940). One of these shots was cut and the other four cropped or otherwise edited starting with the 1969 theatrical reissue. The 1990 50th anniversary theatrical release contained a further revision of how these shots were modified, as shown on the 1991 video premiere. Technology allowed for further changes for the 2000 DVD and 2010 Blu-ray releases as well, all of which are shown in this comparison with the corresponding footage from an uncensored Technicolor print (probably from the 1955 or 1963 reissue).

The white centaurs are arrogant and unlikable. The black character added much needed charm to the film. By removing her, the film lost it's charm.
I wish they could have spent the time and money to re-animate the sequences, instead of just using a magic eraser. Re-draw the black girl without the stereotype hair and features. Maybe re-draw the white centaur to make her into the girl's older black sister, to avoid any notion of servant. Actually give the older centaurs likeable personalities!
Thanks so much. I've been looking for this for years. I am a Disney historian (mostly Snow White) and remember distinctly see it n 1963 (?) at Grauman's Chinese Theater. I have the laser disc and always hoped to see the uncensored version. Times may change but art must be viewed as a reflection of its era and not as a moral guide for future generations.
Well said.
Its not even offensive, they had cartoonish (imagine) stereotypes for lots of white characters too, including the fat greek type shown.
@@BoopSnoot He is a representation of Bacchus
@@BoopSnoot Mh, the representation of slavery in America in a centaur context is as much offensive as the representation of Bacchus ? Are you sure about this ?
While the child in the original probably shouldn't have been included, I still think it's worth preserving. You know, for historical reasons.
Censorship only shows mankind doesn't learn.
oddly enough the character is cute in their acting, but still offensive regardless. You can tell they're paying homage to Peter Paul Ruben's paintings, which also included Africans, but those are not depicted in an offensive manner at all compared to this animation.
No complaints about the white fauns serving the alcoholic & obese white Bacchus? Typical hypocrisy.
Offsensive ? Oh, shut up !
What specifically is 'offensive' about the Sunflower character? Hairdo, skin tone, face, polishing hooves & pinning flowers? Honestly seems like some are uncomfortable with African features, & want them censored from cartoons.
@@inkandcupcakes1695Tks a lot.
I think editing away the character is even worse...
Leave it as it was made. Period.
one of the earliest moments of disney being racist before they embraced today's diversity
I think that whether Disney keeps the characters, crops them out, or digitally removes them, they’re still going to receive complaints arguing on all three sides.
For a '90th Anniversary Definitive Edition' Blu-Ray release (for regions beyond North America of course!), the black centaurs should be reinstated.😉
They're only used for brief moments anyway, much like the roustabouts and crows in Dumbo.
I have to say if you didn't know what was there before it wouldn't occur to you to miss anything. What's interesting is that the centaurs are all different colors anyway.
In the first scene: why they kept the zoom in Blu Ray? They got rid of Otika, the zoom was not necesary (in laser disc and dvd i understand it, because the zoom was necessary so Otika would not be visible)
I think the reason why this scene is reframed is because it would look odd and wouldn't make artistic sense without Otika.
Make her dissapear... is actually the right solution to do?
Like Victorians pasting fig leaves onto classic art in museums. We cannot see the naughty parts!
Sunflower 🌻: Oh Dear.
She's honestly one of the more tame depictions that I've seen. I think the black Elmer Fudd in Looney Tunes is far more offensive as far as this goes lmao
Same, I think they could have just made some small changes and still keep the character.
Oh yeah, you're clearly not the only one to find this character cute (she is). It's the whole context, the slavery in America and the happy slave serving its pretty and classy mistresses trope that does the offense.
In almost 60 years of watching cartoons, I've never seen a Black Elmer Fudd! Do you know the name of the cartoon he's in?
@@delancyj67 All This and Rabbit Stew (1941)
I find the Betty Boop Making Stars depictions of blacks more offensive.
I don’t think this one is as bad as others, they could have just made some small changes and still keep the character.
Eh, it would have took too much to reanimate, I guess. I think it would be lovely if they made new 2D animations with classic music, with diverse characters reflecting our modern society, and paying a tribute to this cute nonetheless character with a less stereotypical appearance
Disney actually did reanimated one scene in the Three Little Pigs. This scene originally contained a Jewish peddler. However, after WW2, Disney decided to change it. I think they didn't change Fantasia by reanimation because it was one of the most expensive films ever made and it couldn't recoup its losses until the 1960s, which is ironic because in 1969, these stereotypes were cut out. Bottom line is Disney went for the cheaper alternative by straight up cutting the footage.
@@katethemikufan9109 Yeah, that makes more sense
Too bad it’s so racist because the animation is truly beautiful.
I am not trying to blow anything out of proportion but some may look at this and resent the contrast between the pretty white centaur and the goofy looking black centaur.
Is she goofy looking? Google image search "African tribes women" for her human, cultural inspiration.
That is exactly what's offending them, an inferiority complex.
Message to kids: "If you don't like a thing, it's ok to censor/eliminate it so you can be happy. Problem solved"
Yes, I don't like displaying black characters as servants with clownlike features. What's wrong with that? Are you a racist?
@@Mobin92 Most likely
Actually, the message here is that if you're embarrassed by your work, you can decide for yourself to fix it.
what is the Myth here?
Myth/Comparison is the heading - the myth is that Fantasia is "uncut" or "uncensored" - and that isn't true.
I hate to admit it, but I'm fine with this removal. With something like Tom and Jerry and their Mammy Twoshoes, she's at least a character with personality and impact on the others. Here, there is no reason for this portrayal besides to be presented as a servant and "lesser being" to her literally god-like masters and reinforce the supremacy beliefs of the time.
@ZC-Infinity I agree my head hurt watching this. No reason to have a racist caricature in a short about Centaurs other then pure bigotry.
@@christianmathew398No reason to have a racist character on any media at all.
She honestly looks so out of place! And the stupid thing is there's other dark skinned centaurs and even some zebra ladies later on! This just seems so malicious
I think the character should definitely stay but maybe redraw its design I always thought it was a hardworking centaur who was there I disliked the attitude of the female centaurs as shes helping them and there being shit towards her
You ever notice how some of these folks only defend Disney’s material when it’s blatantly racist? But positive representation of black characters is bad and “woke”?
Let us know what you’re really upset about, please…
Forced inclusion =/= positive representation
@@-Vitalis- how is it forced inclusion? Do you call it forced every time a colored person is included?
@@-Vitalis-you people cry forced inclusion anytime there's a minority character as the main focus. Seriously, this is not the problem you think it is. Either you're terminally online to the point minority representation sets off a "woke" alarm or you're genuinely racist.
People don’t like the lazy trope of race swapping established white characters.
When Disney actually make POC characters that stand on their own, and they rarely do, people have no problem with it. Nobody had a problem with “Soul”
@@-Vitalis-"Positive Racism" is literally an oxymoron. Also, who cares if there's "forced inclusion." There are FAR worse things to complain about.
But she is just fantasy character why does her race matter? I hear again and again about Little mermaid and Snow white. So let me ask the same question about this cute centaur, what is so offensive about her? She is just a fantasy character!
Mcm Upin Ipin
0:45 LMAO
No racisme.
Thanks.
It makes much more sense as to why they are overcompensating nowadays
It makes literally zero sense because big corporations only care about profit and that woke culture is making them go broke. And they still bending over to China because they need that huge population so they prefer to edit those woke movies than loosing some billions.
Presumably this was edited for China
That is so sad.
Smh
1:21 honestly the fact that was in there in the first place is just gross
It’s important to see how commonplace this kind of representation was at the time though. Disney has released all of their problematic shorts with blackface gags and caricatures onto DVD though uncut, which can not be said for the Looney Tubns from Warner.
Shut up.
To be fair, is she really drawn any worse than the fat drunk guy at the end?
@@greywolf7577 Yes. Yes. And also yes.
I wish they bring her back and change her character, not the woke one please.
Times change
Very understandable censorship, but glad this video exists for posterity
Not understandable.
Uh, pretty understandable. Albeit, I'm surprised they didn't just redo the coloring or redraw the original.@@martinddhyj
Never needed to be censored.
@@exterminateparasites3185it looks super racist tho, so totally understandable
@@alihorda If you use the term "Super racist", then you know you cant be taken seriously as a person.
Ну какая же это БАЗА😂
so they are against racial diversity
No, they erase Sunflower and Otika because they’re depicted as having hairstyles like stereotypical caricatures of black children and being in servile roles around the more Caucasian/European looking centaurs. There’s another pair of black centaurs who attend on Bacchus when he arrives, but they’re designed in a more flattering and exotic manner with having zebra bodies and prettier faces, so they were kept in.
With all the remakes Disney is making and such. Why don't they redo this character? Instead of being a racist stereotype be an actual character, make her own movie.
For example, you could still do the cliché of her being the outsider of the centaurs, eventual meets the African centaurs (that were later in the sketch but, weren't racist stereotypes). She gets a confidence boost and/or learns from them. Decides their way isn't for her, goes back and embrace herself, whether others like it or not. Following in the cliché, she gets accepted by everyone the end.
Can't deny what had happen but find some way to turn it into something good.
The original is always the best.
Exactly. 1. She was a cute character. 2. Not sure why completely taking her out is -not- considered “prejudice”
my point of view is, that the idea in the film may have been to show racial stereotypes in art form. We can use art an imagery to connvey a message, something that's injust in the world.
the animators and writers may have been writing an issue in the film. Dont think the writers are alive to defend themsleves and we cant ask them as to why that scene was in the film.
T'as l'air d'un gros raciste toi.
@@KyloThomas304 is a stereotype to portray black characters with black features? Want smooth hair and thin lips?
@@badbot223 as we can see it has been interpreted as a racial stereotype by many
Good for modern Disney to rectify these problems. They’re trying to save the company by being more inclusive. No black parent wants to subject their kid to this and I don’t blame them.
There's no such thing as problematic art.
Афро-кентавр в этом мультике вылитый негр Лог Дог из фильма "Не грози южному централу, попивая сок у себя в квартале".

Someone won't learn from the past. How cringe
@@animeXcaso pretending your past didn't exist is the best way to forget it, not learn from it.
Yeah because that part of black history when we were centaurs was so important to us, can’t forget that
@@IK-yb5rn yet they decided it's wasn't suitable for kids, lol, for a reason you are unable to understand. I find this hypocrisy pretty laughable.
@@user-li5cr6wv5b I understand the reason, it’s “hey, maybe we shouldn’t show young black kids as servants/slaves.”
Morons like you act like they are trying to erase “history”, even though this footage is available to the public. For the remasters, it’s better for them to change out-of-date tropes that aren’t funny or endearing.
You sound like you really want it to be the 40s again.
I’m glad Disney is realizing their shame and rectifying their racist actions. Goes to show how America was founded with racism in its roots.
What is hilarious is that the censorship could actually seen as being exclusive instead of inclusive! Take that woke people!
You see the promotion of slavery as inclusive? I deeply hope that your comment was meant as sarcastic in a weird way.
Boring

Nothing wrong. Just showing real nature
What do you mean “real nature”?

Adding and taking away as it suits them.
