This summer I kayaked with two friends in Stockholm Archipelago. We would really have liked to continue our previous sea kayaking tour on the west coast ( • Sea Kayaking Sweden - ... ) but due to Corona Virus recommendations we chose to stay close to home incase we got sick and needed medical care.
We initially planned for doing a trip around the outermost parts of the archipelago going from Stavnäs (south) to Simpnäs (north). Planned route (130 km/81 miles during 5-6 days)
    kartor.eniro.se/m/jd3al
Our trip started out as planned but once we reached the outer archipelago the weather forecast drastically changed to the worse with winds around 14 m/s (27 knots /31 mph). So we had to revise our plan and head back into more sheltered waters.
Actual route: (110 km/69 miles during 4.6 days, 24 km/15 miles per day)
kartor.eniro.se/m/6fYc2 (click on the blue items for more information, zoom & pan around)
    Day 1: 22 km Stavsnäs-Grönskär (0:07) # outer archipelago
    Day 2: 27 km Grönskär-Björkskär-Lökaö (8:38) # outer archipelago
    Day 3: 21 km Lökaö-Själbottna (18:25)
    Day 4: 13 km Själbottna-Ängsö (22:36)
    Day 5: 27 km Ängsö-Rådmansö (28:13)

Hi Mats, What a great video! Too bad the weather changed plans, but then you just have options and can get inside where the wind isn’t working your progress so much. Did your one friend build his kayak? It looks like fairly blond wood and a strip deck. It seems like you and your friends are among the shallow rocks quite a bit, how much damage and scars are acquired over the year? Do you have to repair after each season of paddling? My office is still working over the ‘COVID’ season and so not much else going on, except two weeks off in Palm Springs, CA. Vaccines are slow coming to our area, but hopefully the office may get to do some of the vaccination and speed the ‘healing’. Take care and keep producing these great kayaking adventures! 😎

Hi Paul, Thanks, glad you liked it! Yes my friend built his kayak. He has built 4 kayaks, the first two using plans he purchased from Björn Thomasson Design (www.thomassondesign.com/en/). These were his and his wife's first kayaks so he ended up selecting a model that in my opinion is too tippy (could almost never let go of the paddle) and his wife wanted to be very safe and got a kayak that is more or less a barge i.e. too steady! Later he had tested a friend's Tahe Marine Bay Spirit both on the sea and rolling in our pool sessions and loved it being easy to roll, fast yet steady. So next time around he borrowed the Bay Spirit and copied the hull shape for his next two kayaks, one of which you see in my lastest videos. I think he built his kayak using strips of fir wood and various hardwoods for decorative and strength purposes. I imagine you can read more the strip build technique he used on BT Design webpage. His kayak can take more beating than I expected. I think over the last 3 years he has only done a couple of small repairs like adding epoxy where scratches were deep enough to possibly allow the wood to soak up water. I can put you in direct contact with him if you have more questions about his kayak. In one video I accidentally surf over his kayak only leaving a small white scuff mark on his afterdeck.
Palm Springs for 2 weeks, sounds very relaxing! Been there a week when I was around 13 years old. Being retired I spend most of my time building things and improving my workshop storage. I am also working on a new video to celebrate 250 subscribers (was meant to be released when I reached 200, but approaching 250 rapidly ;-)). It'll be a 'Best of ...' video with extracts of my best kayaking videos and I'm hoping it will attract new subscribers. If you don't mind and have the time for it, I would gladly like make it available to you for reviewing and get your feedback on it before making it public. I have an appointment for a checkup next week with a nurse specialised on lung diseases. Hope to hear from her that I will get Covid 19 vaccine before end of Feb. Take care!

Hej!
