- Great encounter in Rome with filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky where he develops some of his major ideas on artistic creation and in particular the importance of the temporal dimension in his conception of cinema. Tarkovsky also comments excerpts from film directors that inspired him like Kurosawa, Buñuel, Antonioni ...(Rome, end of 1982). From Donatella Baglivo ("Il cinema è un mosaico fatto di tempo", 1984).
The "prologue" at the beginning is a quote from Tarkovsky's Film "Andrei Rublev" (Part 3: "The Passion According to Andrei").

This is one of the greatest videos on UA-cam for any artist regardless of their particular craft.
Every word that came out of his mouth is deeply emotional. He doesn't just make you understand what cinema is he also makes you feel it. a true legend
Andrei was sharing his ideas most of which were in his book sculpting in time. A pure artist.
I just finished reading it and I was completely absorbed innit. The moment I turned on this video gave the same magic/feeling :-)

i can understand why directors dont take questions from the country other than his own and expecially at the cold war time. people are mean and education dont necessarily make them better. i hope what tarkovsky answered give the reporters a better understanding of his films.
Thanks for a great video. As I see, these English subtitles was translated from Italian, so, it's good, but I could create English subtitles right from Andrey's Russian speech(cause I'm a native speaker), and, by my opinion, it would be better and more in depth. Producers with lots of interest and lots of money are hard to find. That's the biggest problem faced by director's like him at that time and this is the case now. It's so hard to make everyone happy and to make an artistic valued movie.

This man is one of the supreme artists of cinema. But his argument concerning black and white vs. color film making reminds me of the argument that broke out between the opposing groups of the Poussinists and Rubenists during the Baroque age of painting which argued that line was more important than color in painting and vice versa. Is the head more important than the heart? I think you need both. I'm sure others will disagree because this duality that humanity carries with it usually causes us to align with one faction over the other. Still, beauty and depth can and does lie in all forms of art when you accept it for what it is and not for what you want it to be.

I cannot be completely sure, but I believe that it was a meeting with Tarkovski at the University Tor Vergata in Rome , in the winter 83/84. I had opportunity to see him there, It was after he left Russia and after he made Nostalghia in Italy

Tarkovski se tuvo que exiliar de la URSS debido a la revolucion bolchevique, tenia a la KGB boicoteando sus peliculas, por ello decide irse a italia y luego a Suecia a rodar sus ultimas peliculas. Tarkovski fue un genio incomprendido por eso su cine no es popular, la URSS intentaba que no se saliera del libreto de lo que ellos pretendian, por eso lo persiguen por tratar temas espirituales, filosoficos, etc. Saludos
