For those that complain about the quality of this lens, please give some alternative options that are better. Combinations of two or three lenses don't count, tell me an option with this kind of range that is better. I don't mind if it cost more... up to a point at least. I'll be buying this one before the end of this month unless I find a better option.
How is it 6 years later? 😂
I couldn't agree more. I have Canon bodies and Canon L lenses in my Canon bag (now unused) and the Sony 24-105mm G on my newish Alpha 7 iii and before going for the 75-200mm G I thought I'd try this out. I was blown away by the 24-240mm. So many reviews trash it yet I have achieved higher quality results that I ever got from my Canon equipment and for travel ... one lens covering wide to mid zoom ... it's light too ... I am in heaven. The price is ridiculous.
Thanks for the comments and sharing your real world experience. It appears we got the exact same impression from this lens and the real world value it offers to folks like ourselves ;)
This is the best review of Sony FE 24-240mm lense by far on youtube, great work!
Thanks Nick :)
This lens came out in 2015 when f/4 was best and few lenses. A great beginner and long term. In 2017 the 24-105 f/4 but both are great and sharp. OSS lens on a IBIS camera lets you capture flying hummingbirds hand held, the only way and focus is great on the A7iii at 10 frames for the most keepers. Even in 2022 this lens is on my camera the most while on a drive or walkabout. Sharpness is mostly in post SW. I fell hook and line for the 24-70 f/2.8 and 24-105 f/4 but still the 24-240mm is used the most. from moon eclipse at 360mm and lunar from 24 to 240 and 360 getting the diamond ring hand held have only 30 min to get all shots.
It's a great all in one lens for the money I totally agree Echo :) It doesn't have quite the same punchy contrast as the other two lenses you mentioned, but you can jack that up a bit in post which helps. For the money and versatility, you can't go wrong in my opinion, especially if you can only talk one lens with you for travel or whatever. All the best, Jay
Hobbyist/ traveler here! Thx for your time and efforts to post this video. I have an old A7R (love it!), and I just bought this lens based on your review. Can't wait to get it! 👍
Excellent review Jay. It always good to see someone take into account the market or purpose it's meant for. Bang on the money it's not Zeiss it it doesn't matter. The quality when stepped down looks ready good. Bokeh is very nice at least wide
Phiniox Glade Thanks man ;)
12:20 wow that is the exact same vignette my HX400v has since it started giving me the e:62:10 error (something with the stabilization). got a system camera now instead, so its time to learn more about the lenses themselves and stuff.
Perfect for travel photography. This lens as all super telephoto lenses isn’t really sharp. But if the photos are intended for social networks like twitter, Instagram, Facebook the lack of sharpness won’t be visible.
I just got this lens yesterday, can't believe i'm enjoying a variable aperture lens so much! put some sample photo/video in my unboxing video if anyone wanna check out. :)
Just bought my a 7ii. Blown away IQ EVEN WITH this lens have you done the 16 /35 Ziess ?
Ray Geary I’ve got both lens with my a7 iii and they are the best for me, regardless what people say !
A very balanced and useful review Jay. Thank you. For such a wide coverage lens it is quite impressive.
+Barry Pate Thank you and I agree about that lens quality/ overall performance! I would not mind having one for travel at all ;)
Very nice review as always! I really like that apart from sharpness you also test the lenses for background separation, at least have a wide variety of shots with different backgrounds, highlights and back and foregrounds pics, that viewers can evaluate the bokeh quality ourselves.
TheDanishSpaceman I really appreciate the comments and feedback on the backgrounds and other depth of field sample photos as it relates to bokeh and so fourth ;) Glad you liked it!
Thanks again,
Jay
Hi, thanks for the review. Just a minor pick regarding the minimum focus distance which you mention at 2.11 of your video. According to Sony's own specifications the minimum focus distance varies from .5 mtrs at 24mm FL to .8 mtrs at 240mm FL.
+John Mackay Hello and thank you very much for that correction! It totally depends what focal length you are at when talking about the minimum focus distance when using a zoom lens. When zoomed in to 240mm for example the minimum focus distance will be more than when at 24mm as you posted above.
Thanks again for the correction and I'm sorry about that slip-up on my part in that regard ;)
Jay
Excellent video! Great work Jay. Very thorough.
the best sony tester ever. thanks man!
+YONG XU Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Jay
(REF 14:15 into the video) Actually the NEX6 has no advantage in "zoom" over an original A7R - they`re both 16Mp (the A7R in APS-C crop mode) , in fact the A7R`s sensor has better dynamic range and pixel level sharpness
Yes, that is true and good point. I was not referring to using the A7r in crop factor mode though in my video, I was comparing the A7R full frame reach vs crop factor reach on my Nex-6. You are absolutely correct though and I appreciate it! ;)
A brilliant review.. really well done and good talk over.. with your 'real world' shots together with the all important Exif'.... I have this lens on order mainly for the focal range but wasn't really thrilled about it .. but following your review here.. I am now greatly looking forward to getting to use the lens.. Thanks again .. Dj..UK.
Thanx for putting together a very detailed review.
Thanks to this review!! I was "hunting" a deal, waiting for the right price. I got mine today for approximately 750$ dollars :D directly from Sony. Can't wait to try it out.
Thank you for the great review! I really like all your sample footage.
I think for the range and performance of this lens, the price is very reasonable. Saving up for this lens!
Do you have any experience with the 70-200 f4 compared to this one?
TheBulldozer Thanks for the comments and I did review the FE 70-200mm f/4 OSS G lens Here: ua-cam.com/video/BnRa1NCmpic/v-deo.html
The 70-200mm f/4 is significantly better in distortion control and corner sharpness, but has no where near the range.... It's fairly large as well because the zoom is all internal. Much better weather sealing and faster focus abilities due to the dual motors etc... Also has more pro features like killer glass lens coatings and switches for limited focus and so fourth... A pro lens vs a all-in-one kit lens pretty much is how I would compare the two...
I hope that helps,
Jay
***** Thank you! I appreciate your review and info!
Thank you for review video
9:54 Where is that house??
Really nice place.
Thanks and I'm not sure if that shed/ barn is still there but it's in Liberty NY. If you are in the area I can give you an exact location, but generally that is where it is...
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the reply🙏
I would appreciate it if you give us an approximate street number☺
@@i.c5474 It's right around here: goo.gl/maps/nJsYcRPofX1rUoSy5 If you are coming from the the highway and you turn right onto Neversink Rd, or CO 16, or 55 it's called... It will be on your left a few hundred yards into the field. Like I said, it might not be there anymore because it was about to fall down it looked like when I took that photo years ago....
At 16:40 you see difference of blue LEDs in raw and jpeg. Why do they change so much? Does the camera also filter out some UV light from the RAW file? That would be kind of fascinating if they can detect and filter UV light digitally from the "profile" of the raw pixels.
great review, nice samples, thanks!
Sound practical analysis. Good job. Thank you.
Gotta have a radio... come on now! Loved this review. I'm curious though, for the image at around 12:02, if you took that raw image into Lightroom and under Lens Corrections if you checked off "Enable Profile Corrections" for this lens would that fix the vignetting?
Thanks and yes Lightroom can fix the Vignetting for the most part very easily!
but when you zoom in the minimum focusing distance should also gets a bit bigger right?
The minimum focussing distance of the 24-240 increases as you zoom it. It goes from 50cm to 80cm. The max magnification remains the same i.e. 0.27×. (from sony site)
Hey, Remember: distorsion is corrected IN CAMERA in a very nice and quite perfect! Even during video! This raws are not distorsion corrected.
HI. Very nice review. Thanks. I m debating between sony Fe 70-200 mm and Fe 24-240. I d liek to purchase this mostly for recording lecture. Which one do you recommend? Also, How should i intall these two lenses on tripod using smallrig cage. Cage seems to sits on the tripod. These are are heavy, i shloudn't just attach it by camera with cage and other like mic and monitor on top of that right? what should i do? It is for video. Thanks in advance.
great review man
+Elliot Tebbs Thank you!
How would you rate the optical quality (not counting the longer focal range) of this lens to the sony 24-105 for macro (or at least very close-up) and video?
Certainly not as good. The colorsand contrast are flatter, and the images are not as sharp. However, as you can see in this review, the real world quality is still great for most purposes. Especially with a little Adobe Lightroom love when shooting Raw quality.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks Jay!!
Great review. I'm sold!!! Thanks!!!
+Ricky Jarnagin Thank you for the comments!
Why does all that distortion happen? Too close to the subject? What about distortion full-frame vs aps-c? More distortion on the full-frame than aps-c?
neptunusmaris Distortion is caused by the lens itself. The cheaper full frame e-mount lenses tend to have more distortion, because the size is kept as small as possible. Basically to keep the size, weight, and cost down as much as possible, Sony decided to allow for a little optical distortion. The short sensor to lens mount distance (18mm) is what causes problem really. That short flange to sensor distance does not give much room and the lens needs to be a larger diameter in order to deal with this. Same with the 28mm f/2 lens. It so small and compact, that the distortion is noticeable. Sony would have had to make several mm larger than 49mm if they wanted no optical distortion. Look at how huge the new Zeiss Batis lenses are for example. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1140832-REG/zeiss_2103_750_25mm_f_2_0_batis_wide.html/BI/7257/KBID/7777/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x627141
now that's what I call a review.. Well done and thanks for all the info.
Thank you very much!
This lens would make any noise when I use it on autofocus mode on a a6300 would it? I have lenses that make noise when on autofocus and it throws off video quality.
+Locked On Outdoors This lens is very quite, but not 100% silent. Much quieter than the standard older lens focus motor. Newer Sony lenses have much quieter and near silent AF motors
Great in depth review 👍
Question please : I'm looking to upgrade my kit lens on NEX6 .
which lens u recommend that can achieve great pictures in wide range of shooting options without having me swapping lenses?
Gray Fox In my opinion, the best option for image quality is the Zeiss 16-70mm f/4 OSS Lens which I reviewed here: ua-cam.com/video/5m4s2ziCeX8/v-deo.html
Another option is the 18-200mm lens, but the image quality is not as good due to huge range and small form factor.
I hope that helps,
Jay
Be sure to check out my Sony E-Mount Lens Guide for all the available lenses, review links, and more!! www.sonyalphalab.com/guides/sony-e-mount-lens-guide/
Link seems dead. Oh wait, it redirects you to the new website apparently. Manually removing the www works.
Do you have any update for this lens on a 42mp camera like the Sony A7R II?
Thanks for the video!
@@dejayrezme8617 I updated the link, Thanks!! And as far as the 42mp A7R II goes, this lens would certainly work, but I would recommend an better lens for sure to get the most out of that high resolution sensor. This lens is a great all in one option, but does not have the killer sharpness or resolving power of the higher end G badged and GM badged lenses...
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks! Do you think you could see the softness of the lens with 4k video? Or would it be sharp enough?
It's only 10MP for 4k I think. Since my initial comment I learned more about MTF and what MTF charts mean, but I still have to understand how that correlates to sensor resolution.
@@dejayrezme8617 The average user or view would not see the difference or "softness", but yes there will be a difference in sharpness and overall image quality when compared to a top quality lens.
@@Jason_Hermann Cheers
This lens 24-240 or Zeiss 16-35 F4 or Sony 24-104 G lens for travel and landscape photography? I want the best images possible. Is zeiss that much better? I can't decide.
The 16-35mm f/4 is not that much better optically than the 24-105mm, but it does offer a significantly wider view at 16mm vs 24mm. The FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens is noticeable better optically than the 24-240mm, but it does not have near the range.... It's always a compromise Jeff one way or the other ;) I hope that helps, Jay
@@Jason_Hermann yes that helps a lot thanks man! I'm thinking the 24-105 for travel and landscape and then later upgrade to 100-400. Thanks for the reply!
That is a really solid choice and be sure to check out my review of the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens if you have not already here: ua-cam.com/video/x-M3aVApVqM/v-deo.html
Nice review, and it's good lens for amateurs (ie when image quality doesn't have to be top-notch), because of its versatility.
However I decided on the new Sony A7RII, and I have a feeling this lens (or even the Zeiss f4/24-70mm!) would kinda ... blind the camera :/
I'm currently searching for 1st lens for my new A7RII, and started my search with zoom-lens. My current summary is:
- Sony 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 (not Zeiss!), while cheap (in Sony terms) it's like throwing away $500, for something you don't want, and that would ruin some of your pictures.
- Zeiss f4/24-70mm, much much better than the Sony28-70mm, but for it's price (x2.5 more!) it surprisingly (for the Zeiss brand) shows some compromises with image quality (similar distortion and edge/corner softness). Perhaps fine lenses for mid-tier cameras (and perhaps the old a7R), but I have a feeling these $1200 would be better put in other zoom lens even if more expensive.
... and that it's only x2.9 zoom (compared to the x10 of the 24-240!).
- Sony 24-240 (from this video), now starts to seem like a good compromise great-versatility vs lower-quality, but on lower res cameras (like the old a7R, or just the a7II (w/o the R)) would be good fit, and the price for x10 zoom (and 36-360mm in aps-c).
So right now I'm about to give up on the idea of 1st zoom-lens for versatility, and get probably the Zeiss 1.8/55mm, which has mind-blowing quality and sharpness while being e-Mount native and very fast AF, and not too expensive given the quality.
And give the zoom-lens-idea some time for hunting or perhaps wait for new models to be released (or find good zoom-Canon+adapter combo, that doesn't make big compromise with AF-speed)
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
+blueckaym Thanks for the comments! All the lenses will take good pictures first of all, so get that out of your head. The top quality optics offer better distortion, which can be fixed in post, and better corner sharpness. Also the micro contrast is often better, but that can be enhanced in post. The top quality lenses get you photos that require very little post processing is how I look at it sometimes. They are significantly better, but only like 10% for a lot of extra money. That 10% is pretty darn significant though once you have worked with top quality for a while. I use the kit lenses all the time and they do a great job. The 18-55mm lens for example is my go to lens for my Nex-6. The results are awesome for all intensive purposes in the real world. If you are a Pro and are selling photos to clients, then you can justify the extra money, because you will arguable save time in post fixing lens flaws... The 28-70mm kit lens is also excellent in my opinion for the money, but lacks more in range on the wide end. 28mm is not wide enough for me personally a lot of the time. The 24-240mm is a great lens and I would not mind having it at all for travel type photography. One lens can do it all in this case. Primes are the best for sharpness and the 55 f/1.8 would be my #1 recommendation for your first prime. amzn.to/1U416XX
+Jay SonyAlphaLab I have a sony a6000 and wanted a all in one lens. Should i go for the 18-105 and the 55-210 or just this 24-240 superzoom? I don't really mind about the weight, just the image quality
+axtelwong That is an excellent question. I would rather have the wider 18-105mm g Lens just because the 24mm on the crop factor camera works out to almost 35mm in the real world. That is not wide enough for me. This is why the APS-C super zooms are 18-200mm for example. Optical quality wise the 24-240mm is pretty good, but not quite as good as the G lens in sharpness. Using it on a crop factor camera though would use the best part of the optics (center area) and should be a great performer overall. It's a very good choice for an all in one super zoom, but lacks a little on the wide angle end in my opinion. I hope that helps!
Jay
Berxtel, you have an interesting question.
But Jay SonyAlphaLab, witch one is more plaisant for manual focussing, I don’t shoot video. Thanks.
Late answer but might help somebody ....Absolutely, go for the 18-105 f.4 and using Clear Image Zoom, no need for a 55-210mm, at all! I tested it out using both lenses ( that I own) and came to that conclusion. The weight of the 24-240 lens on the a6000 would not be good!
Amazing review! Thank you
+Ioana Ursescu Thank you!
great,I just bought one cause your video, thx man
How do you think this lens when attached to the A6300 fairs against the RX10III for IQ?
I think the RX10 III would have sharper images, but not the same shallow depth of field control due to the smaller sensor.
thanks a lot for the review man , can i mount this lens on my a6000 ?
Hi Jay , I've bought a A7r2 with 24-240mm FE lens. I also have a Sony Zeiss 24mm Prime lens E Mount . As per you which lens will give me a better depth of field and quality ? Thanks in advance
I have the 55-210 lens; you think with a6000 and the 36-360mm is worth buying?
is this lens good for sports? if i want an up close shot? its outdoor and i will be on the sideline close to the players, but i want actually close up footage while they are on the field. I want the good quality and sharpness that i need.
Paired with the A6500 the lens worked remarkably well for me shooting indoor ice hockey and solid for soccer too as long as you are not trying to shoot the entire length of the field
Nice review, thanks man
Does it hace AF? IT is fast compared to the kit lens?
Hi, thanks a lot for your review, I have one question though, How can I manually focus this lens with Sony a7s? I put the Camera on MF,still, the focus ring goes for ever without focusing?, thanks in advance for your kind reply
Any idea how it handles on the a6000 or 6300? Comfortable to use or an awkward unbalanced mess?
Execelente review! Thanks a Lot!
Thank you!!
Amazing value imho, not cheap but versatile and like you said fairly priced.
Great review ***** looks like great everyday/travel lens
ObelixCMM Thanks man ;) Not to shabby for the all-in-one coverage!
Jay
Nice shots Jay - and good review - I wish lens was for $800 - seems every lens for the FE mount is $1000 :( except the kit and the 28mm - I have the Sony 18-200 for E mount APS-C - and it is OK - but focus speed could be much faster - and I am using the A6000 - I am less concerned with distortion in RAW as I correct in Lightroom no problem - I just have more concern about sharpness - and light gathering - F6.3 is getting to be quite slow - I have a feeling I might get better results with my Panasonic 35-100 ( 70-200 ) F2.8 - maybe actual aperture with M43 compared to FF might be in Net similar but the glass is super good in the Panasonic 35-100mm F2.8 - and focal range close - so for $1000 I am struggling with justifying buying the FE 24-240 - but your reviews are always great -
igetsmart Thank you and I hear ya. Sony has a given price point range and it's about $1k or up for all the good stuff. I would consider getting some prime lenses if sharpness is your main concern. The M43 system has a lot of advantages and might be a better way to go as you said. The full frame has such a killer look and depth to it though in comparison. It's hard to go back... You could go old school lenses and manual focus, or even Canon glass with metabones if focus speed is not an issue.
Best,
Jay
Hi, thanks for that a great insight!
***** Thanks for the comments!
This would be good for landscapes?
+Jaime Huppert Yes, it's good for everything except low light really considering the range in my opinion. 24mm is great for landscape photography as are many other focal lengths depending on your shooting style. Some folks prefer 35mm or perhaps wider than 24mm. The 16-35mm would be the ultra wide angle that many use for landscape photography as well. I do feel 24mm on a full frame camera, is wide enough for most landscape photography though.
I hope that helps.
Jay
Nice review. Thank you.
Thanks you!
What lens would you recommend for my Sony a5000?
Darrell Swain My #1 choice would be the Zeiss 16-70mm f/4 OSS Lens: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1001009-REG/sony_sel1670z_16_70mm_f_4_za_lens.html/BI/7257/KBID/7777/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x460047
Yes, BoxxyFan , but not near the optical quality of the 16-70mm Ziess ;)
If you were to get ONE lens for an A7II as an all arounder, would it be this one or the Zeiss 24-70? Or should I get the 55 1.8? I'd greatly appreciate your recommendation for a solid FIRST lens.
you're comparing three completely different lenses. As an "all arounder" the 24-240 is the obvious choice because it's a 10x zoom and it covers the 24-70 and the 55mm focal ranges as well as going far beyond them.
The 55mm 1.8 Zeiss is a great lens and super sharp but it's not an "all arounder" by any means and the 24-70 gets you more range but again it's no "all arounder".
When out in the field shooting say street photography I’ve used only the 55. It’s great but sometimes you want a wider view. And sometimes you want to zoom across the street etc. The 24-240 can do that. If you want to shoot people the 55 is less noticeable and you can get more people shots without them even noticing or caring. So if traveling and shooting everything you see the 24-240 is it. If concentrating on people or landscapes get the 35mm. If you want to shoot portraits only or product shots for detail use the 55 or the 85 1.8. For shooting models I use the Sony GM 24-70 and the 85 1.8. For macro: 90mm 2.8.
Also another option I’m going to try is the 28 f/2.0 for street shooting and carrying the 21mm adapter for more of a landscape view. The 28mm is a great night lens as well. And for shooting without being noticed.
Allen Freeman how about for events?
Full frame lens on an APS-C (A6000) a good match? novice here.
+Zhorell Ski Not bad, but larger and heavier than necessary. The 18-200mm for example would be a better option for the wide angle end in particular compared to this 24-240mm lens.
It would be 36-360mm so it's really completely different. Also it wouldn't use the whole part of the lens which would theoretically give you a sharper image on crop sensor than full frame. Basically it wouldn't be an all in one lens anymore and a 70-300mm (105-450mm on crop sensor) would be a better telephoto option IMO.
Hey I'm soon to be switching to the Sony A7Rii, I'v got a awards event coming up, photos of people at their tables and people being given awards. Would this lens be a good shout? I was also thinking about the 24-70? Any help pls?
I think it would do a great job for that purpose. Plenty of zoom for the award receiving, and plenty wide for people at their tables. Optical quality is very good in the real world, but the Zeiss 24-70mm does offer better for sure. The range is much less however, and zooming into the stage would be limited close-up abilities, unless you were right in front. I hope that helps,
Jay
Thanks Jay, very helpful. I'v got some time before the awards anyway so I'll have a good think
Best of luck Matty ;)
how good is it for video?
For the money, I would say really good!
Wish Sony made a cheaper 24-120mm f3.5-5.6 or something along the lines and made it even cheaper.
Have you considered used?
@@Jason_Hermann I have but I can't justify paying 600 or more for just so so image quality. The next best thing is the 24-105 but it's 900 used. I have looked into adapting a canon 24-105 but im worried about af. Also hoping Tamron makes a cheap 35-150mm for Sony.
@@squirreldemon3506 My Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 l Lens works pretty darn awesome with the Metabones adapter for photography purposes. Video not so much though. The Eye-AF Feature does not work, but the focus is fast and accurate otherwise.
wow, it looks good where do you live ?! its beautiful, canada ?
Michal Gajdos Sullivan County, New York is where I live and thank you very much for the nice sediments ;)
is this lense work with Auto Focus? or is it manual focus only?
+ProzKhmer thanks for the question and yes this is a auto focus lens.
Jay
is it worth getting it instead of the 24-70 zeiss??
Durjoy Imteaz Well, that depends on your optical quality demands? I would say no, but I'm poor these days... If I had the cash I would rather have the Zeiss in most cases. All-in-one convenience is amazing on the 24-240mm though and for a family outing I would rather have that. If it was a customer or something that I wanted extra killer, the Zeiss optics would be ideal ;)
Unfortunately Sony standard zooms for FE mount are severely lacking at the moment. My favorite lens is Canon 24-105 F/4 and not just for the outstanding quality of that lens, but also for probably the best range for travel. I wonder if I can cheat and just use that lens with adapter and completely skip Sony awful zoom selection.
Hi, I use the 24-240mm sony lens with my Sony A7r ii and I´m worried because I notice a movement (play) between the lens and the mount when I zoom in or out.
Does it happen to you?, can I consider it as normal?
thanks
Would rather have them make 24-120mm f/4 than this.
Wesley I hear ya and I think lenses like that will be coming out this next year or the year after. Sony is now focusing on fast f/2.8 zoom lenses and fast prime lenses for the Full frame e-mount system. Hopefully they will listen to all the wants and needs and give us even more lenses to chose from. Come on Sigma and Tamron, what are you guys waiting for?
Sorry, Jay, but this time I'll have to disagree with you.
1) ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS is not remotely cheap.
2) basically ANY lens is sharp at F8
3) although in camera correction or software correction might correct for that awful vignette, it always comes with some image degradation
Basically, this lens is no better than a Tamron at about 1/2 the price or less.
This lens is dreadfull at this price... if it were 500 bucks, it would be an ok lens, but at 1.000?!? No way...
Thanks, anyway, for your time and effort in making all these reviews.
gustavo campos No need for apologies ;) I hear ya, but there are no other native e-mount lens options that offer this range. None exist. What does exist is the Zeiss 16-35mm, Zeiss 24-70mm, and G series 70-200mm lens. None have the range and are all more money. The only other kit grade option is the 28-70mm lens which costs ~$498 US. Tamron offers a 28-300mm lens and it costs $850, plus you would need the LA-EA4 lens adapter to use it. So, based on that information this lens is relatively cheap considering the range it covers. You would need to spend crazy cash to get this coverage with the other current lens options available was my point. Even from Sigma and Tamron from what I can tell. I do understand $1000 dollars being a lot of cash, because I can't afford this lens and really want it. Got a playground for the kids instead...
Thanks again and I rally appreciate your feedback and taking the time to explain your thoughts on the lens. Some great points!
Jay
***** Hey, Jay. Thanks for being so understanding. :)
Well, I see your point, but the fact that there's no other option doesn't make THIS one a good option. I think Sony is making a lousy job with its lenses... when they are Zeiss, man, they are great. When they are Sony, bahh, in general are way too expensive for what they deliver.
I'm a a-mount shooter (A77) and I'd like VERY MUCH to upgrade to a FF FE-mount camera, but the lens problem is a major issue from where I stand. Even with the announcement (or release) of the FE lenses they are way too expensive for the buck or when compared with what other brands sell their clients with sort of the same result. That's already a reallity with the A-mount lenses and I thought they'd take another path with the FE-mount, but I don't see that...
Anyway, keep the good work, my friend. And thanks again for the review, because, even if I disagree with your conclusion, seen the results allowed me to decide that THIS lens is definitly not worth my hard earned money! LOL.
B. regards
gustavo campos BTW, Jay, have you had any issue with the shutter clatter resulting in soft photos with your A7r?
gustavo campos Good points, but I don't agree 100%. If it's the only option available and it performs fairly well with such a huge range, then it's a good option in my opinion ;) When another lens comes out with the same range that is better for the same money, I will reconsider... I think Sony does a great job with the kit lenses honestly. The Zeiss lenses are better, but so much more money for way less coverage in comparison. Sony has more expensive lenses on average than Canon or Nikon, because they don't sell anywhere near as much. Therefore the cost to produce them is more money. The FE lenses have another issue unfortunately. It's the 18mm sensor to flange distance. This creates an engineering nightmare for wide angle lenses in particular. The lens physically has to be much fatter to account for the flange distance. Note the size of the 24-240mm vs the Tamron 28-300mm for the Sony A-Mount for example. That is another reason lenses cost more, because more expensive glass is required to make sure the light going onto the sensor is not at to steep an angle. The results are soft corners when the lens is not optimized correctly. The advantage of the 18mm flange distance is the ability to adapt all other lenses to the E-mount camera with an adapter. Crazy power and versatility if you decide to go down that road. Native glass is still limited, but getting better fairly quick! Much faster than the APS-C E-mount lenses have been coming anyway.
Have a great day and nice chatting with you,
Jay
+gustavo campos The Sony 28mm F2 is a fantastic little lens for $450.
Do Sony manufacture their own Lenses !!. If not, then who are Sony's OEM's.
I think they outsource a lot of them, but also make some for sure. I honestly don't know the specifics, sorry...
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks & Regards.
great
Because yours review is good I had chance to spot how bad the lens is. It is all about a lens quality not a money. What point to buy a good body and bad lens?Buy a bridge camera same quality.
Thanks for the comments, but I totally dis-agree ;) This is lens is not a Zeiss lens, and the range it offers along with the cost and quality makes it a fantastic option for the full frame mirrorless users on a budget. A bridge camera has a tiny sensor in comparision and not even close to the same depth of field control etc... The Sony RX10 for example is awesome in it's own way, but can't compete with a full frame sensor if you prefer that format. The full frame format offers so much more depth if you desire that, and this lens gives you incredible range with good quality at a fair price. Again, just my opinion and I appreciate your thoughts!!
Jay
The FE70200 F4 G is only 400 € more expensive and MUCH better... But I know it serves another purpose
Janoeliop Yes, Correct ;) Made to pair with the 24-70mm f/4 OSS Lens. Thanks for the comments!
Jay
5:02 Nothing fency, got to admit...
But hey, no of-fence.
You have used too long times to really show sharpness.
Thanks for your great reviews. From Paul at FocusPulling.com
Paul Moon Thanks ;)
JPEG mode when reviewing a lens?
Why????????
For still it's pretty good. For video, I don't recommend it. Great review though.
Mark Hunter Thank you very much for the comments and sharing your video feedback!
***** I didn't feel it produced crisp video. When using the zoom the results, in my opinion, were muddy, and the lens was pretty slow to focus. Now that I'm using the RX10 (and RX10 Mk2) for video, I can see this even more. The RX10, even zoomed into 200mm is super sharp.
The pic of your dog is amazing ...it's a pretty ugly dog , but amazing pic ....
Thanks ;)
