@@Duncan105vr I know Dustin and watch his stuff too, but he doesn't have standardized method of testing like Chris. Chris, your lens review videos are simply the best. You're consistent, thorough, focused on affordability, and so genuine. Thank you for all the great value you provide to the camera world.
@Tom Cass Hi Tom, as Myk has not answered yet, let me take a stab at it. I've come back and watched some of these reviews multiple times. I also trust these reviews the most. I appreciate the concise but accurate chart explorations and the predictable flow of the reviews. We get a snappy presentation of information with great examples that can be viewed at leisure on Flickr. I browse Christopher's Flickr albums a lot comparing the images. It seems like he tries to take good photos with each lens, not just some random shot of his counter or a weed outside his door like some other reviewers do. We get, in a sense, to see the lens performing "at it's best." I also like that the focus is all on the lens, not a sideline into promoting the reviewer. There is a humility about the channel while at the same time Christopher's personality comes through is a very authentic way in his monologue. The production value is also very good -- the sound, transitions, and general quality show an attention to detail that are missing in many reviews and make these feel nicely "finished." I imagine that others watching these videos are like me and are interested in photography as part of a larger desire for beauty, clarity, and journalistic accuracy. We get all that here.
Same here. I always watch his reviews before I buy a lens. If he has to many bad things to say about the lens I want, I won’t buy it. I bought the canon 55-250 IS STM Lens and my sigma 16mm 1.4 because of him.
You are the best lens reviewer I have seen on UA-cam, and so nice to see that you have begun looking at Sony lenses. A lot of people are going in that direction these days.
Holy smokes man Thank you so much for the reviews. The amount of time you spend in testing these lenses is always appreciated! It's always a good day when the Chris Frost youtube notification pops up in the corner of my screen! I'm trying to collect a lot of the Zeiss lenses from the classic line. When I get more I would love to send them to you for a group review on your channel.
Hi, you have helped me become a Discerning gear acquirer. Thank you for all of your excellent videos. I apologize if I missed it, but have you been inclined to review the optical features supporting the cameras in the latest, best smartphones?
Even though I know sharpness isn't everything and most lenses these days are plenty sharp for most projects, I still find myself watching this guy's videos. The reviews on this channel are very helpful and to the point. I appreciate that.
Awesome, thanks for this Chris. The Samyang 85mm f/1.2 XP is looking really appealing for astrophotography. It's got the same aperture diameter as a 135mm f/1.8 or even the 105mm f/1.4, so it'll collect just as much light, but it's got the wider field of view it fit more in at once while still having the resolution needed for smaller objects that don't fill up most of the frame. I've got my eyes set on it next!
Thank you for these superb reviews, Chris. Your full review of the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 already convinced me to put it on the shopping list. Now this roundup has me considering one of those 135s specifically for portraiture, which would otherwise have been one of the jobs for the 70-200. Now I just need you to find my ideal ultra wide zoom for full frame (main camera is a 6D, same as you). Probably an f/4 so it can take a screw-on polariser.
I bought 3 budget lenses following recommendation from this channel. All were as good as advertised. Useful information for free is always nice :) Keep up the good work.
Nice work, Chris 👍 I've bought a number of lenses based on your reviews, and all I can say is, "you've been spot on" in your accessments - mainly due to great consistent testing.
Mr Frost is by far the best lens and camera reviewer on the Tube. I’ve spent quite a bit of money based on his reviews. As a result, my business is highly successful from the lens acquired after his reviews. I have a new list to build with my Sony A7riii. Thanks Christopher.
Want to say a BIG THANK YOU for doing these reviews. DXOMark has let us down and you are now the only authority that can help us choose which new lenses to invest in.

I was so surprised to see the Canon 55-250mm kit lens on this list that after seeing a Canon refurbished version on sale recently, I had to give it a go. I use it on my Sony a6300 with a Metabones IV adapter, and so far I’ve been just as surprised with it in person as I was seeing it on your top 10 list. It’s definitely inexpensively built, but, it’s also very well built and nicely put together. It has tight tolerances and even a fairly smooth zooming barrel. There’s something really impressive and satisfying about the rare breed of lens that can performs well and achieve that performance with very little resources and a tiny profit margin. The images look great so far and the IS works even better than I was expecting. In low light my Sony has some issues with AF at 250mm, where it’s at f/5.6, but since my camera is metering at ISO 4,000 or higher (at 1/20 shutter speed) that’s almost dark enough not to matter to me anyway. Thanks for the great recommendation. What a cool find!
Thanks and Merry Christmas! The 135 certainly has earned that position, was also expecting the 35 art there but maybe it has been in the top 10 earlier! Love you videos Sir!
Love your review Chris, thanks for the hard work. Quick question, do you reckon the Sigma 35mm 1.4 prime is far off that top 10 list? From your review of it I thought you were truly impressed with it. Keep up the good work!
“It’s a manual focus portrait lens which will make you fall in love with.... manual focus portrait lenses”. Class. Your best comment yet, ever, by a country mile. Superb list, thanks for posting. Fellow Welshman 🏴 here. From the port 👍
Hey Chris, thanks for putting out that outstanding list for us! I see you have a lot of manual focusing lenses in there. You really need to get your hands on the Voigtlander 65mm F2 Apochromatic 1:2 Macro E Mount. its considered to be one of the best lenses paired with the Sony A series cameras and there just isn't a lot of videos out there. It may qualify for one of the sharpest lenses in your next list. Its almost Leica Quality and only around $850 USD! Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
Hi Christopher. They is one lens that’s untouchable...Sony 90mm f2.8 micro OSS? I would love to hear your opinion and results once you test it.... Thank You.
A very nice list, especially considering I've already got the 55/1.8 (and I love it), I have the Sigma 135 waiting at the local post office and I'm planning on getting the Sony 85/1.8 in the near future.
I love this videos. In fact, I have bought lenses based on your rankings (the budget ranking, really) . What about opening it up to 15? Or listing the notable exceptions a-la-watch mojo, or more methodically? Thanks for your videos!
Split it into 2 videos. Also, if you have a list of the top ten sharpest lenses without price restriction that would be good for someone who has no restriction in his/her pocket.
@@gunsts I think Chris has got this right with the price limit. Going above £1000 on one lens is a major turning point for hobbyist photographers, and excludes many of them, however keen. @@worstuserever You have a valid point. However, there's nothing wrong with another list of top ten with certain price criteria or no price limit at all. It does not hurt other people for the list.
Sigma and Samyang/Rokinon make some immaculate glass. I just picked up the 20mm Simga Art f1.4, and I'm an avid user of the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 manual lens. Each of which are astonishingly sharper then any wide angle competition, even the canon L 14mm! The Rokinon comes in at half the price and weight of both, and I think it's a must have for anyone in the market for astrophotography, events, etc.
Excellent list Chris! I’m curious if you’ve ever gotten your hands on the Sony 12-24mm lens? I’m looking to cover some extremely wide focal lengths so I can add a bit of extra flare to my wedding photography so if you have any advice or you’ve played with this particular lens I’m all ears! Thanks again for all the hard work you put into your channel 🙏
Thanks Christopher. I have to admit that I don't own a single copy of one of your 10 sharpest lenses. Regarding sharpness my personal reference is the Carl Zeiss (GDR) Tessar 50 mm f2.8 from 1967 for full frame SLR cameras like Praktica, Exa or Exacta. - I would like to see a video of the other end of the ranking, perhaps the 10 most blurred, flawed, disgusting lenses. Maybe I own one or the other of them... A beautiful Advent season for you and your family!
Thank you so much for this summary. I can only imagine the amount of time and effort it took. Genuinely surprised by the number of Samyangs and Laowas and so forth, it's a great time to be a hobbyist. However it does beg the question about more expensive glass since £1000 today isn't what it once was. Would you consider another quick video, the top 3 from here against the best you've tested if price were no object?
By now, Sigma must have dealt with the problems in the 85mm f/1.4 Art lens, its AF hasn't failed me once yet. Bought it mid-2019 and I have used it very intensively on weddings on a Canon 5D/4.
Well, at least I own two of them! Thanks Christopher and a very merry and peaceful Christmas for you and your family. Looking forward to what you review in the new Year!
Cole Frechou I agree with you, I have tested the top 3, however this 90mm macro lens from Sony is still the sharpest lens I have tested. In DxoMark chart, it’s the second sharpest lens among all lenses just after Canon EF 300mm f2.8.
It is quite sharp, unfortunately I sold mine because the purple fringing was too crazy on my copy...was going to order a new one but ended up with the voigtlander 65mm APO F2 Macro instead.
Dr. Erick Lopez oh sorry to hear that, mine has no issues at all. The details I got with the photos (a ring, a watch face) are crazy. That’s the lens I can use for commercial products. I can’t find any sharper lens myself personally.
I love your top 10 lists. However Since I only use a camera with an L mount system (Sigma FPL) I wonder if you would consider doing a top 10 list for lenses meant for specific mount systems. Example Top 10 Sony E mount, Top 10 L mount, etc. Maybe top 10 M mount since there seems to be adapters to make M mount lenses fit on almost anything.
Dear Chris! Thank You very much for this review. Been waiting for this eagerly :D. I wanted to ask the reason why the Samyang XP 50mm isn't on the list, also is the Sony 55mm sharper? Secondly, I would like to see a list that includes more expensive lenses as well in the future. And lastly, I saw today that Samyang announced the 35mm f.12 XP, and can't wait to hear your review of it. Thank You very much and God bless!
The Sigma Art lenses are ridiculously sharp. I recently upgraded from a Canon 80D to a Sony A7RIII. I kept my Sigma EF mount lenses and added the Sigma MC-11. The Sigma Arts actually focus better on the Sony body with the MC-11 than they did on the Canon.
Sigma 105 f1.4 is also a great lens Sadly a little expensive But good choices, although I strongly disagree with the Sony 85mm It is extremely sharp, BUT the chromatic aberrations are just terrible For me it was a reason I returned it and went for the Zeiss Batis
Dear Christopher, thanks for your awesome work. I love your reviews. I´m taking the liberty of asking you for help... I´ve sold my equipment and I´m starting from 0. I´m choosing between these two setups / brands (mostly for portraiture work) 1) EOS R / RF 35mm f1.8 IS /EF 85mm F1.4 IS 2) Sony A7III / Sigma 35mm f1.2 Art / Sigma 85 f1.4 Art What combo is better in your opinion? I blindly trust in your judgment Many thanks and Merry Christmas!
I love your videos, they are well done and full of information ,so much so that I have problems keeping up. Would you consider doing a ratings chart, so you're fans could download it? Ps have you tested the sigma 60 mm art for emount yet?
The new Tamron 17-28 should be good if you're using full-frame Sony E-mount. If you're using Canon EF mount then the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 Di OSD is pretty good
Thanks for this. I love Sigma Art lenses so much, but one thing I am so concerned is the auto focus issues. I am a Sony A7 III user and I will appreciate if you help me choose lens. Will I go with Sigma or use only native sony lenses? Thanks in advance!
Great video, really enjoyed watching this and I'm really happy to see that both the Samyang 135mm F2 and Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art are still so highly rated here. Just out of curiosity, are you planning on doing a "top 10 sharpest aps-c lenses" at any point? Hope you have a Merry Christmas and look forward to watching your future reviews. Thanks.
for videography, which lens should i get for a general purpose lens for a 200D? 18-55mm Canon lens? vs 18-135mm cannon lens? vs 18-200mm Tamron? vs 18-270mm Tamron lens? vs 18-300mm tamron lens? It will be for a travel show, we already have an 10-18 and a 50 fixed lens for filming in the studio and inside, but we need something for filming outside.
@@christopherfrost I've already ordered the 17-85mm lens, oh dear. if it has the same wobbly sensor issue about half of reviews complain about i will have to sell it and buy the 18-135
Thanks for quality content. All these lens require 30Mpx up to reveal their true potential, I think... BTW -"The 8 best wide angle lens you have ever tested" ranking would be very interesting too.
Thanks for all your hard work! You've been a great resource for prepurchase research over the years. Any chance of a video of top 10 "characterful/charismatic" lenses? Keep up the great work!
Christopher, I love your reviews and I have watched a looot of them before buying a new lens since I'm on a tight budget. As you have done in other videos (mainly the comparisons), I think it would be great if you could add an actual rating to the dimensions you review. Like: this is a 2/5 on image quality 3/5 in value for money And so on, so that it would be easier to compare one to another, especially when they are quite similar or you are evaluating many options.
Great videos, Christopher!! Do you feel that it is not worth buying ASP-C lenses? Besides money (though sometimes there are full frame lenses cheaper than some crop sensor lenses), I feel that it gives you more versality since you can then jump to full frame any time (I am a Sony A6000 user searching for some lenses he)
How would the older version of the 55-250mm canon lens do? I'm looking for a cheap telephoto since I'm really only shooting trains and I'm stuck with my shitty Canon 400D and 2006 kit lens.
I wish, you'd also tested the Sony 90mm F2.8 OSS Macro, the Sony 100mm F2.8 and the Sony 135mm F1.8 FE lens (admittedly, priced beyond the £1.000,- limit), as well as the Viltrox AF 85mm F1.8 lens.

I just purchased the Canon 90D i have the 24 pancake, I would like your opinion between the Canon15-85 and Sigma 18-50 I am a retired wedding photographer and will be taking family and vacation and some elementary school sports team and single portraits, no action. So please let me know what you think.
I'm looking for a comparison of the sharpest lenses you've tested regardless of price. It's like a question of how sharp can something be for the price vs what is actually the sharpest available. And you've tested many high end lenses, so i'm perplexed.
Hi Christopher, always enjoy your videos - I noted you're not testing Nikon lenses, just pointing out that they have a reputation of being among the best on the planet and so many of us use Nikon that your tests would be very helpful. Merry Christmas bach.
Pretty slick that the Tamron 70-200 G2 made the list. Although I wonder why the tamron 85mm 1.8 VC didn't make it. I would love to have that Sigma 135mm but its ~$1299 here in the US!
first of all, thank you for such a plenty amount of reviews! when i want to check any lens - i'm just checking if you already reviewed it could you, please, tell me what are the better value-cost lenses for mirrorless camera on your opinion no matter size (ef-m, ef-s, ef)? wide standard, portrait i've bought canon m50 a month ago and looking for good wide, standard, portrait lenses currently thinking about canon 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 vs canon 11-22 f/4.0-5.6 as a wide angle sigma 17-50 f/2.8 vs sigma 18-35 f/1.8 as a standard canon 85 f/1.8 vs canon 100 f/2.0 as a portrait but i suppose, you have a better experience and can give some advices! i'd appreciate you for your thoughts!

Great video, as always, how about a top ten of wide angle lenses?
big thank you Christopher, what a pleasure to watch all of your videos :)
Well, at least I own two of them! Thanks Christopher and a very merry and peaceful Christmas for you and your family. Looking forward to what you review in the new Year!
Chryseas S.
You should test the sony 90mm macro lens.
Yes! I love mine. Insane detail even on my a6000's small sensor.

What's the best ~30mm prime lens for Sony FE? Looking between 24 to 35mm. Less than a $1000.
Fantastic overview, your reviews are a cut above the rest!
Can you suggest me the best and cheapest lens for canon EOS M50 for wild life as well as portrait photography.
£1000 or less.

Thank you Christopher! Great video. Have a great holiday season!
The XP 50mm f/1.2 is amazing so it did get an image in the honourable mention section
Sigma 105 f1.4 is also a great lens
Sadly a little expensive
But good choices, although I strongly disagree with the Sony 85mm
It is extremely sharp, BUT the chromatic aberrations are just terrible
For me it was a reason I returned it and went for the Zeiss Batis
I wonder where the Fujifilm XF 90mm f2 lens would have been on this list. It’s really good!
Dear Christopher, thanks for your awesome work. I love your reviews.
I´m taking the liberty of asking you for help...
I´ve sold my equipment and I´m starting from 0.
I´m choosing between these two setups / brands (mostly for portraiture work)
1) EOS R / RF 35mm f1.8 IS /EF 85mm F1.4 IS
2) Sony A7III / Sigma 35mm f1.2 Art / Sigma 85 f1.4 Art
What combo is better in your opinion?
I blindly trust in your judgment
Many thanks and Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the review! you pointed out some nice lenses to consider! Your model is stunning in all her shots!
Those top five or so lenses are incredible. At least two of them were ones that I was considering strongly about buying, mainly for astro.
Really simple and sincere reviews as always. Thanks
Loved this, but a 2021 update would be greatly appreciated! :)
I love your videos, they are well done and full of information ,so much so that I have problems keeping up. Would you consider doing a ratings chart, so you're fans could download it?
Ps have you tested the sigma 60 mm art for emount yet?
Great list. When will you test and review the Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4?
When the hire company has one for me to borrow
Which wide angle full frame lens would you recommend for landscape photography
Christopher, please answer
The new Tamron 17-28 should be good if you're using full-frame Sony E-mount. If you're using Canon EF mount then the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 Di OSD is pretty good
Do you think the sigma 70mm is sharper than the Sony 90mm macro?
Amazing, as always! I only missed the wide angles.
It's a lot harder for manufacturers to design sharp wide angle lenses
Thanks for this. I love Sigma Art lenses so much, but one thing I am so concerned is the auto focus issues. I am a Sony A7 III user and I will appreciate if you help me choose lens. Will I go with Sigma or use only native sony lenses? Thanks in advance!
It's different for every lens - check out my review videos, where I tend to talk about autofocus issues
Thanks.
Just published it :-)
Great to see one of my all-time favourites, the Samyang 16mm F2, on that list.
Many Thanks Christopher, your videos are very helpfull for me, to choice the lens for my camera. GBY
for videography, which lens should i get for a general purpose lens for a 200D?
18-55mm Canon lens?
vs
18-135mm cannon lens?
vs
18-200mm Tamron?
vs
18-270mm Tamron lens?
vs
18-300mm tamron lens?
It will be for a travel show, we already have an 10-18 and a 50 fixed lens for filming in the studio and inside, but we need something for filming outside.
For videography get the 18-135mm STM
@@christopherfrost I've already ordered the 17-85mm lens, oh dear. if it has the same wobbly sensor issue about half of reviews complain about i will have to sell it and buy the 18-135
@@christopherfrost actually, should i just get the 18-135mm STM lens and sell the 17-85mm?
@@RasputinReview I personally would do, yes
@@christopherfrost Thankyou very much for your answers
And now the ten sharpest apsc lenses🤪😁.....thanks for your review/opinion
What adapter did you use with the tamron 70-200 G2? Thank you
Will u consider samyang af 85 mm f1.4 FE with this list??
Just bought one
Thanks for quality content. All these lens require 30Mpx up to reveal their true potential, I think... BTW -"The 8 best wide angle lens you have ever tested" ranking would be very interesting too.
YESSS SIRRR! :-)
Thanks for all your hard work! You've been a great resource for prepurchase research over the years. Any chance of a video of top 10 "characterful/charismatic" lenses?
Keep up the great work!
I'm thinking of doing a video of my 10 just plain favourite lenses :-)
I love my Tamron 70-200mm G2!
Have a Merry Christmas!
Awesome man. Thank you for all of the very valuable info & tests.
I agree my most trusted and nicest lens reviewer. Have bought a few lenses off this list now 😀
Christopher, I love your reviews and I have watched a looot of them before buying a new lens since I'm on a tight budget.
As you have done in other videos (mainly the comparisons), I think it would be great if you could add an actual rating to the dimensions you review.
Like: this is a 2/5 on image quality
3/5 in value for money
And so on, so that it would be easier to compare one to another, especially when they are quite similar or you are evaluating many options.
What about best lenses on the Fuji XT-3 and the nikon Z6?
Are there Samyang AF lenses for other mounts than Sony E?
Very impressive review. Just what I was looking for.
How do you think the Sony Zeiss 135mm f1.8 stands up to the Sigma?
These are all normal and telephoto length lenses. Do you have recommendations for sharpest wide/ultra wide lenses?
I wish, you'd also tested the Sony 90mm F2.8 OSS Macro, the Sony 100mm F2.8 and the Sony 135mm F1.8 FE lens (admittedly, priced beyond the £1.000,- limit), as well as the Viltrox AF 85mm F1.8 lens.
A review of the 90mm lens is coming, and I want to test those other lenses some time this year, too
Hey Chris.
I know - I'd love to test Nikon - it's all a question of time (I don't have any)
Hi Cristopher, what do you think about Zeiss Batis lenses, are worth their price? I'm considering them for a Sony a7Riv camera.
How many manual focus lenses did you consider.
Wonderful eyeopening video for a lens snob like me :-), thanks and great work.
Pretty slick that the Tamron 70-200 G2 made the list. Although I wonder why the tamron 85mm 1.8 VC didn't make it. I would love to have that Sigma 135mm but its ~$1299 here in the US!
Sharp, but not quite enough for this list.
first of all, thank you for such a plenty amount of reviews! when i want to check any lens - i'm just checking if you already reviewed it
could you, please, tell me what are the better value-cost lenses for mirrorless camera on your opinion no matter size (ef-m, ef-s, ef)? wide standard, portrait
i've bought canon m50 a month ago and looking for good wide, standard, portrait lenses
currently thinking about
canon 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 vs canon 11-22 f/4.0-5.6 as a wide angle
sigma 17-50 f/2.8 vs sigma 18-35 f/1.8 as a standard
canon 85 f/1.8 vs canon 100 f/2.0 as a portrait
but i suppose, you have a better experience and can give some advices!
i'd appreciate you for your thoughts!
