Thanks for the update. I got into the hobby about 15 years ago and noted the Foundry prices then, I can't imagine what they are now. Plastics are getting better and who knows, maybe we will all have 3D printers in a few years.

Excellent painting and basing on these Swiss, a work that lives up to the splendor of this magnificent period!

I admire your resolve to stick with large units... 32 Pike and even considering a larger formation. I'm well-experienced in "Reet Big Wargames" as Yarkshire says. But with metals costing as it does, our group has rebased to smaller 12 men units. Sad really. And plastics, while cheaper for me just doesn't have the heft of metal. I was impressed with 7th Son's Northern war prints. I even purchased a resin printer this fall with hopes of dabbling. Who knows what the future is for my painting table. I do enjoy seeing your large units take shape. Thanks!

Very nice Swiss Fraser! Love the colours and variation as ever, Yes Freiburg, I think you're right. Have always loved Foundry sculpts in so many periods and ranges, but it is hard to justify the expense, and p&p is such a killer atm, like everything else I suppose😔, Many Thanks👍

As a 'younger' wargaming enthusiast I much prefer resin and plastic but do like foundrys metals.
I had a good look at their old west range at Vapnartak at the weekend but had to stop myself buying more stuff that I don't necessarily need at the moment.
The cost of metal miniatures is increasing at quite the rate (most likely connected to the cost increase of raw materials) and is in some cases pricing people out.
As much as I'm not a big fan of metals, there is something quite nice about the heft of a metal miniature... Especially when formed up in a unit!

Even more expensive to order UK-made metals shipped to the US, but I do it about once a year from Foundry or Perry because there are some terrific ranges.

The Swiss look great, as I would expect from you. Yes, metals are getting too expensive, plastics are so good these days that it's what I buy mostly. They are also easier to carry around. 😁

I’m a huge fan of Foundry. I nearly pulled the trigger on a Russian Seven years war army at Christmas. Even with the 25% discount it would have been £1500 plus.
I’ve got Ebor Figures. WWS Dutch and GNW. Cracking figures.
Nice pikeblock! Waffle over! See you at the show this year no doubt!

Coming along nicely! Just ordered 6 Auxiliary Roman cavalry from Aventine, £25 inc postage. Needed them to match the ones I have, not cheap. However my friend who casts metal figures for a number of companies tells me the cost for the materials has rocketed.

Very nicely painted and based unit Fraser, a great addition for the army. I’m looking forward to seeing a battle report at some point mate.
I’m trying to be disciplined and not start any new projects, concentrating on operation cupboard clear out 😂, but you now how it goes, the magpie in us always goes for the shiny 😂.
I agree with you about the prices, I think it’s a sign of the times with people struggling in the current economic climate. I much prefer metals, but can see a time when they become very niche and taken over by resin and plastic. We will have to at some point sit and reminisce one day over a coffee about the good old days of metal minis 😂. Take care mate and speak soon 😁👍.

I've always been a big fan of metal figures, occasionally I would dabble with plastics, struggle with assembly and decide not again. When it came to building a Spanish Italian wars army a year ago I decided to give plastics another try, using Warlord, Perry and Atlantic and I've hardly looked back, I'm now building an Italian army, again with plastics, they're cheaper and there's always a variety of parts to use.

Great to see the collection coming together Fraser. They look lovely.
I agree with you on the Foundry prices. I thought the secret of selling was stack it high and sell it cheap! Alas that no longer seems to be the case, just “keep pushing the price up”. I understand that apparently metal prices have risen, but as far as I know, Foundry are still pushing out figures that were first sold thirty odd years or more ago.
They are lovely figures and I do have a bit of an aversion to building plastics, but even if I have the dosh I’m not comfortable with paying the prices they are now, asking. I personally think Perry metals are better value and have bought samples from a number of manufacturers before starting my Italian Wars project. I have even ordered some Perry plastics to mix in with the metals.
    I’ll see how it goes.
Hope you are able to get a Renaissance game soon and your troops do justice to all that lovely painting 🤣

Absolutely fantastic pike blocks. Excellent as always. Mark me down as in agreement on metals, so much more soul in those figures but that inflation has been a nightmare for my landsknecht project.

Figures look great as always, cost is getting a little out of hand for toys especially in the US where it is 25% order uncharged for shipping. I'm a napoleonic collector and Warlords $28 for a single gun and crew pushed me to Perry and 3d printing only

I love Foundry, but the last two price rises really have turned me away from purchases for me, especially in Europe, I do pick up from shows though.
Perry are still best bang for buck, I expect 3d prints to start arriving for the period so I will switch over as soon as they arrive.
    Cheers

You're rapidly approaching Games Workshop prices with those metals!😅
Speaking of; Warhammer prices are becoming obscene. Especially as the company keeps making record profits, yet it becomes more expensive every year.
It's been a long time since I bought their models straight from the shop. It's either eBay or a discount store for me - When I even buy them!

Hi Frasier, as always loving the work, I have also recently painted a Florentine and Swiss warbands for saga and lion rampant , all my minis are lead, I can kinda (?) justify this as I only need 60-70 minis per army. However you are painting to play a far bigger scale. I can see how the costing can irritate. I do like lead though…

Ive spent thousands of dollars on Foundry because I absolutely love their miniatures. I normally shop at Christmas but I will also make one or two orders throughout the year. Its truly a shame with the recent price hike. If they end up going any higher then I will throw in the towel on them. Metals are king for me but perry plastics and a few from other companies are excellent as well. In my opinion, most resin is dogwater but I have some newer 3d printed miniatures that truly look fantastic.

If buying in bulk, the Foundry Christmas sale has decent discounts to make the figures a bit more affordable. I don't often buy new figures directly now because of the rising cost. I find I can unearth most figures I am looking for on EBay in decent or new condition (or needing a bit of work) at significantly lower prices.

  • @Wargamer570
    @Wargamer570 День тому

Foundry have IMHO always been (too) expensive. Certainly now because, even still sterling, they are old sculpts. Living in Europe buying metal models from the uk is even more expensive and, for me, way too much. Salute is the only time I stock up. And even then. Resin printing has become my go-to. Not easy and quite involved to get it going but that will improve with new printer models and improved technology. Not everyone’s cup of tea. On the plus side it has spurred on a plethora of excellent European digital sculptors who, in more and more instances, are on a par if not better than the traditional UK ones. If you want to put in the effort the choice is quickly made. And I don’t pay that high price for my figures anymore. It’s manageable and big bataillons are possible again. That said I should maybe first start painting the 10’s of kilo’s of metals amassed over the last 30 years. But hey I’m a wargamer and I’m fabulous and entitled to. 😂 Keep up the good work, love your video’s.

IMHO it’s always a trade off between plastic and metal. Plastic way easier to work with but always seems to lack the “life” in metal cast from a hand sculpt. Case in point, the fantastic sculpts by Nic Collier for Bloody Miniatures. Probably just the haze of nostalgia speaking but I still have a love for the Ansell chunky style. (All aside from the price aspect of course.)

I’m 34 and joined the hobby in 2018, so as you can imagine not around in the “old days”. I’ve always known plastics and metals, and to be honest still think plastics still don’t measure up to metals, even after all these years. Metal has more character because the figures must be bulkier (one of those cases where less is more). As for resine I don’t find them that different from plastics to be honest, no? Price-wise, may I interest you in 10mm? ;)
