- Because we don't make pit silage I thought I would film the neighbors because they do, plus they have all the gear too...isn't that handy.

Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows 'Once A Day' (hence the name) only in the morning, and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

Great video…… interesting how they mow the grass…. Maybe to fit more with the rake OR teadder???? I know this is a old vid…. So I’d say the field made some crop of maize!!!

You are so lucky Andrew, here in Ireland our winter starts very soon and we have our cows indoors from November 1st until March and we would be feeding silage until mid April. At least 10 tonnes per cow. And we get the same price for milk as you do. Keep safe.
Yeah it’s a Massive cost and labour saver not having to put cows in sheds down here. That’s a lot of silage too!

Great video, top of the line equipment there, red rims in the field (Fendt Or Class) and yellow ones on the loaders (JCB or Volvo) Then you really have a great peace of kit.

Did a season in Taranki to riverlea contractors a decade ago, I was ploughing behind the chopper to plant out in maize. Recommend heading over to nz to anyone, beautiful country. Nice video

Thanks, we do a lot of cartage with trucks for silage. Bit quicker than tractor and trailers and way more comfy 😂

When you said annual did you mean Italian Ryegrass that was tilled after maze and grown over the winter then tilled to maze again .It looked like Finches yard the pits were in so is that silage used there or sold on and i’am guessing your son could end up working for them if he likes tractors that much .here’s hoping for a more settled spring to you

There’s no housing for them but they do have a composting barn that they use when the weathers not so great 👍

Super stuff Andrew. 👍🏼 Is it very early in the season to make silage, as it's October here, last month of autumn I'm comparing season's, so it's early spring with you guy's? Would there be alot of silage made this time of the year? 🤔
This season’s been late, last season silage got made a lot earlier in our area.
All depends on the season but not really, last year some people around here were making silage in our winter 😂
Theres a lot being made at the moment but mostly annual grass which will be going into maize ground 👍
Hello from Michigan USA Why are you doing silage when it's just starting to be spring? It's fall here so spring there. Nice vidio and I like your cattle. I think Jersey's are pretty especially the calves
It’s surplus grass which will be fed out in summer when we go into drought. Plus it needs to come up so the maize can get planted.

So the tedder will catch all the grass in one pass and not leave half a row behind.
@@markwade1789 but then if u see at 2:38 he is going up only getting one row but if it wasnt mowed like that he would be getting all of it but then i suppose it dont really matter

its not a cutter they call it a mower
It wasn’t supposed to be Tedded but pretty much so the rake can get more in a pass 👍
Have to wonder why they used the groupers on the mowers if they were going to ted it out, before a quad swather🤔

How's the grass growing up where you guys live? Here in Canterbury it's a struggle, lots of guys are having to feed out a lot of supplement.
It’s finally warming up so seeing some growth now, but it’s been a challenging spring for sure!

Might sound like a stupid question but when do u feed out the silage. Here in Ireland it is fed as a winter feed as we rarely get droughts in summer. As a rule in nz is it a winter feed or do you normally feed it in summer as well
Nah that’s not a stupid question!
We’re the total opposite, most of our supplementary feed is fed over spring till autumn and definitely in summer when we tend to go dry more often now than not. Because we don’t supply during the winter we can get by just on grass 👍 hope that answers it 🤙

I guess piling silage is the same the world over. Tom Pemberton has often shown the process also.
Yep pretty much, the only difference is that in the UK they store they’re silage mainly for the winter and here we do it for the summer 👍
