    Good for you on the switch! This year I got back to archery after 25 years. I decided to pick up a recurve and killed my first doe. 34 yard shot from the ground. I didn't even think twice. I love it. My brother in law thinks I am crazy too, he shoots a high end Hoyt. I love the fact that while you are hunting the focus is on the deer not the equipment. It frees your mind.

    @ericsmith1508 8 років тому +13

    the thing I love about traditional shooting (aside from the obvious classic primal feeling of older styled equipment) is that if I miss...I have NOTHING to blame but myself. no equipment no moving parts to point a finger at. nothing to hide behind. no excuses! which conversely means...that all my hits are absolutely, undoubtably....my own.

    One thing we All have to realize
    Archery is a skill 4 times per week, 52 weeks a year, and you are not guaranteed a deer every time you step into the woods. This is bowhunting

    welcome on your coming from the dark side! You won't regret dumping the wheelie-bows, sights and gizmos. Next you will fins yourself making your own arrows, strings , and maybe even bows. You will relax, enjoy and have fun with archery..........

      Well said. Compound archery is all about the bow. Traditional archery is about the archer. Cultivate yourself and you'll become more of an archer and more of you.

      Panzer D im 12, and im looking for my first bow, i just want something fun, which one would be more fun to use? I sort of want a compound to show my friend what a compound is like, but i also want a recurve because i sort of like the feel of using recurve, which one should i get?

    • @panzerd5248
      @panzerd5248 7 років тому

      Personally I think the Recurve is more fun to shoot, but I also think that it is more difficult to master than a Compound bow, but I enjoy a challenge. How much money do you have to spend?

    • @tommylakasi3022
      @tommylakasi3022 7 років тому

      Panzer D i want to buy it with a couple other things, so if i get something too expensive, ill not be able to buy the other items. Im looking for a youth bow around 50-80cad. I can get the inferno stag, inferno buck, and the inferno impala on amazon. The buck is a compound and is the cheapest, but a few reviews say it snapped. The stag is over my budget by around 15 bucks, but it has 5stars and is the most powerful of the three(its a compound). I also like the impala, its balanced. Im not a very good shot, so i think the buck would be best suited for me? I also want to show my friends how a compound feels. Would a compound or recurve be better for beginners to learn?

    • @panzerd5248
      @panzerd5248 7 років тому

      A compound would probably be easier to learn on. There are more Archery shops that are devoted to compound bows and they can help you with setting the bow up and teaching you how to shoot it. I was just looking at the Lancaster Archery website and they have some nice affordable recurves listed in their youth bow section.

      qoute...Those compounds pros aint no joke!
      They are to me! I shot a 3-D shoot with a group of wheel guys and it would take twenty minutes for 4 guys to shoot 4 arrows. First they would glass the target and then get out their range finders and discuss was it 27 yrds or 28 yards. When it was finally time to shoot they would line up their peep sites with their magnifide lighted fiber pins or what ever they had, then hold their draw for what seemed like 30 seconds an finally with their mechanicle releases, they would launch an arrow. If they ever hunted with their rigs they would have to ambush their prey for either a tree stand or a gound blind and they would most certainly be next to feed or a watering hole. That is not hunting to me either. But like I said, I have not problem with their craft, I just would not be caught dead doing it.

    • @tomburrows3608
      @tomburrows3608 9 років тому +2

      I don't think that you understand my point. I choose to shoot trad because that is what I love. Killing something is not the main thing to me. In fact it does not measure if I enjoyed the experience or not. I love to still hunt with a trad bow and in no way would I sit in a tree stand or in a ground blind with a trad or a wheel. If that is what gives you satisfaction go do it. Just do not insist that I should share your feeling on the subject. There is no need to argu or to insult. I know that you can't force people to think the way that you do. I will agree that there are far more people today that want every new invention that comes along to assure their kill opportunity but I get no satisfaction from that. If you do and as long it is legal, do it if you want. And if you choose to call that hunting, so be it.

    • @tomburrows3608
      @tomburrows3608 9 років тому +2

      I am sorry if I came accross as pompous that of course was not my attention. It all started by your video of you annoucing that you are going back to traditional archery. I made a mistake of voiceing my opinion on the subject. I by no means wanted to have to defend my opinion no more than I want you to defend yours. To me, a compound bow is no more of a bow as a Marine Sniper rifle is a musket. That is my belief and that is that. If anyone wants to own and shoot them that is their business. For the fact that you don't like it because I have an opinion that is different than yours, makes you sound pompous.

      +Tom Burrows I agree 100%. I feel the same about Olympic archery as I do with compound bows. They don't feel natural in the hand.

      +Richard Gredwulf Here's what OP had to say: "I have no interest in compound bows at all. I have no problem with people that do shoot compounds, I just don't think it is archery to me." Thats a FAIR statement. Know why? Look at the last two words: "to me." It's his flippin' perspective on archery. Then you come barging in with a dictionary and what you think, getting defensive over compound bows.

    I just traded my last combound (Mattews bow). An Amish man liked it for (quick meat technology). He made a beautiful bow rack to hold my traditional, and primitive bow collection. It fit good in his buggy, going down the road. The bow rack fit good in my S.U.V. going home. We are both very happy. Happy New Year

    I recently converted also, due to back surgery. I have downed from 65# to 45# too, which has really made a big difference . It is a lot easier on the body. I can still kill anything walking in these wood. Try some of the 300grain broadheads to help quieting the bow.

    Congrats on the huge leap. I took it a long time ago. I have never hunted out of any kind of stand or blind, but I do only shoot the longbow now for hunting. Once you get really serious, get yourself a good Longbow. You will be surprised how much more accurate you will be with it. They shoot slower, but with traditional, speed is not the issue. Now, I have kept one compound for indoor target shooting, but I have 4 traditional bows. Good Luck!!

    With so many hunters using tree stands has actually educated mature deer 60% of the time a big mature buck will look up towards your stand if he winds your scent,being up in a tree actually broadcast's your scent in a wider pattern traveling farther,where hunting from the ground the brush and the tall grass will break up your scent and keep it from spreading out.Ground hunting is the way to go you are not limited or confined and you can pattern the deer better to be in the right place at the right time.good luck this season.

Have turned the poundage down on my compound and put it away... I also have started to make my own bows with scrap wood and fibreglass...and I'm smiling all the way.

    If you’re not hunting for the meat, the more you equalize the odds, without maiming or making a proud trophy suffer the agony of a tortured death, makes you a true sportsman. I spent time in Spain with a bull fighter in the pit , handing his decorations and sword, when it was time. I had a girl with me once who was squeamish about it, but didn’t mind walking around the arena holding a corner of the cape.
    Later my friend explained that it was just like a ballet and the Beaty is in the show and a perfect beautiful kill! If that bull had not died clean, the cape would be empty and may not even circled the ring, but we all went to Madrid and celebrated the beautiful dance of death.
    I can appreciate your wanting to level the odds, but when I hunted, I just didn’t have that kind of money , so I stayed pretty simple, and preferred , a recurve or longbow, or whatever I was used to at the time..

    I hunt off the ground and use a re-curve for the same reasons you stated... but the greatest advantage is the weight.... My re-curve is 1/3 the weight of my compound bow... so i can tote it through the woods all day...one more advantage is it doesn't have to be level to shoot accuratly like a compound bow

    At 18, I used shotgun and rifle. At 25, I shot an 11 point, I butchered 204# of meat. From there on, I could track deer by scent. I had to get out of a house, for 3 days or more and do not shower. Wash yourself in cold water. All clothes on lines overnight to dry and air out. At 30, I started in archery. Used a Browning Nomad. My draw was 32 inches, about 58 at release. I went to a pair of leather moccasins and got a scary quiet movement going. At 38, I walked into 3 yds, at one deer and 5 yds the next day. I hung my bow and just shot paper. I stopped "hunting" after that. I would take a sleeve of crackers with me and feed the grayjays and squirrels. Once I had them quiet, I could walk anywhere.

    I used to shoot and compete with compound bows - way too technical and frustrating as I shot with fingers.Won Ontario 8 times and Canadian championship twice. Went back to traditional because it was fun again. Glad those days are over. I started shooting at 8 years old - my grandfather was a carpenter who built canoes, boats, paddles and oars. He built my first bow from old hockey sticks back in the fifties.I still have that bow. We had a 3d coarse way before they were popular. Took small game, turkeys and I remember my first deer kill with a bear grizzly. Its Fun getting together with friends and shooting 3d after all these years. Im 74 now and aint quiting. Best decision you will ever make.

    no dude! you're not off your rockers, it's always like that, you start off with compound bows, then crossbows and then you switch over to traditional, recurves then longbows, and then the real fun starts when you want to make your own bows and arrows, I've seen this before in some bowyers, as for me I'm into longbows now and making my own arrows, much more challenging and fun.

    So, I guess I'm 7 years late with my input. I agree that success in traditional archery is measured differently than in compound archery but don't sell off the wheel bows yet. There's a place for them too. I like the compound for putting meat in the freezer and once that's done, it's tradbow time. You are completely right about hunting from the ground too. Extremely rewarding. Up close and personal. I have so many great experiences to reflect on that never materialized as a kill that my measure of success is different nowadays. Knocking one down now and then is still the thing to do, BTW. But it takes a little more patience and it's so much more rewarding. Best of luck to ya.

    I received a bear grizzly as a Christmas present in 1974 along with three dozen bear practice arrows and a dozen hunting arrows with the old bear broadhead. Fred Bear was the man and took every manner of game with his bows. Bear archery came out with the whitetail hunter a couple of years later, I did not like that "bow" at all. Traditional archery is where it is at and if it were up to me, no game could be pursued without traditional archery. Archery hunting is far more fulfilling than any other.

    The problem with modern bows is that they have so many attachments when what is simple works better. You do not need a lot of things on compound bows. Just have a quiver for your arrows and learn to hold arrows in your draw hand and you're set for fast and accurate shooting...
    And as the advice from the great Eastern Roman and Greek archers(who learned archery through hunting, which some archers of that era hated them for their stance by the way because they fired horizontally holding the bow, but they followed similar principles to everyone else) goes, speed in the release is important to shaking loose the arrow for power.

I enjoy ground hunting too. It's a real challenge. Just understand that a successful season for a recurve hunter who ground hunts may be to fling one or two arrows with or without a kill. When you are face to face with a deer so close you can see each others eyelashes twitch and have nothing but a stick and string in your hand, you will understand what a huge thrill traditional archery truly is. Good luck!

      @TrehanCreekOutdoors Рік тому

      @@mknight6556 Yes Sir, it will get your blood flowing and your heart pumping at high speed to see a deer about to walk RIGHT BY YOU at mere feet away.
      Let me preface what I say next by saying first that I consider traditional bowhunting from the ground a pursuit where the hunter is trying to kill "the dumbest deer in the woods" and certainly not the smartest, most alert deer. But oddly, there are plenty of deer who let their guards down when they have no reason to suspect a hunter is anywhere around them.
      I like to put on camo face paint and obviously camo clothes then find a natural brush pile or brushy areas where I can sit down into the brush and basically be unseen by an approaching deer. If upwind of the trail, many deer will stroll right by without ever knowing a hunter is waiting for a shot...until it is too late. They won't smell you, they won't see you, and if you sit still they won't hear you or detect any movement. So you just disappear from their radar scopes.
      Deer really don't expect hunters to hunt them like that as very few do. They have all learned where every deer stand is sitting in the woods and always check them from afar before they approach. But they don't think about a hunter just picking a random location and setting up.
      Any reader who is not a traditional archer hunting from the ground is missing the true thrill of what traditional hunting was like centuries ago. Give it a try! You will be glad you did.

    I'm 33-years-old. I've never once hunted out of a tree. I killed my first squirrel at 75 yards with a head shot open sight single shot .22 at 8. I was a fetch dog from 4 till then except rabbit hunting, my brother and I had to wrestle the briers for years of cold wet winters. Only after our first kill did we get to bring shotguns into the briers. We hunted quail as kids. I miss that meat. I whistle at them now days and hear them whistle back. Couldn't imagine killing one now. Did a lot of small game hunting as kids. I went to war at 22 and made it back to the US at 23 without ever having to shoot at a man. Had a few in the sights and thank God every day I never had to finish that hunt. Shot my first deer at 30. In 3 years I've killed 7 deer. Only 2 with a gun. I've always killed from the ground. I stalk and learn my prey. That is the only way to hunt. Great choice, way more fun that way.

    I took a bear in 2008 with compound. It was kind of anti-climatic. I only practiced a couple of months and the actual shot was just like target practice. It had a sight, a trigger and a let off. After that, I never hunted with a compound or gun again. I have not taken anything with a recurve yet, but I am practicing daily to get better. I recently got back into archery. It is traditional only for me. I love the traditional. I am not good enough to hunt with it yet, but I have critters coming to my yard including raccoon, fox, skunk, and opossums. I will take one of those and eat them (not skunk). One tip I have for getting better with trad (this made a huge difference after getting over the initial learning curve: hold the aim steady. I count: "solid, solid solid," which is 3 seconds of a solid hold at full draw before I start the release. This, in contrast to snap shooting, has made a huge difference. And when I say aim, I mean instinctive, gap, or crawl. No matter what you do, hold the aim picture for a steady few seconds before you back tension through the release. If you can do that, you will improve your accuracy and precision by 10 fold.

I'm a primitive hunter and love the challenge of the real hunt on the ground with a bow I made and well as cane shaft and chert head arrows I've made. A kill means so much more when hunting this way. so I'm comend you on your transition and morphing into real hunter. Welcome:)
    The only thing is that we may differ on is that trophy hunting to me reflects a low level of a healthy ego. I pass big bucks buy for more tender tasty does. You get the same amount of me and Mr. Majesty lives on to be breed and make more meat for the table and to be seen again by you.

    Traditional archery is more reliable. Last year elk hunting I came across 5 dudes standing around trying to figure out how to change a bow string on a compound in the field that snapped. I chuckled and wished them luck. Good luck hitting anything crawling up a mountain banging your sites and snagging every branch just getting to the elk. If I miss it’s because I miss. And I can change my string in about 20 seconds if I take my time and it doesn’t affect my site because I’m my site. If I miss isn’t because I missed. Not because my bow got jammed in the dirt when I slipped. Oh and my bow is way lighter.

    Traditional archery requires a commitment to hunting that no other style demands, except maybe spear. You become deeply and intensely involved into the flight of the arrow. It's like being in a marriage that demands effort on your part to figure it out. You mature as a hunter and as a person. You don't care if you your range is limited, you don't care if you don't fill a tag. You become deeply submerged in to your hunt. You fall in love with nature and our short lives. It truly is about the journey. Draw smooth and let it fly. Traditional forever....

    I don't hunt but am considering getting in to tradarchery. I have to say, if I ever were forced to hunt or had the inclination, this is the only way I could do it. It gives the prey chance and actually takes skill, meaning you at least earned it, unlike these dudes that go out in the woods with AR-15s and ridiculous gear all to take down a clueless deer. Right on.

    Welcome to real archery.... It's easier if you practice and when you kill one with a trad bow, there is nothing like it! It's a superior weapon in my opinion. lightweight, easy to shoot quick, and way more fun to shoot than a compound. Good luck!

  • @williammawk1720
    @williammawk1720 7 років тому

    I started with a recurve at age 27 in 1970. Compounds were just getting started and were nowhere what they are today, as a matter of fact some of them were still slower than a decent traditional bow. People started buying them because they could pull them back and hold them a lot easier, they began putting sights on them and using releases, stabalizers and other gagets. As time went by they were being perfected and got faster and were faster to learn to shoot also. I have heard bow instructors say they could take a person who has never shot a bow and in 30 minutes have them shooting good enough to go hunting. This is the reason people have gone to the compound bow, they are easier and faster to learn to shoot. There is no doubt that the compound is faster, more effecient and you can learn to shoot them faster. You now see people shooting game at unbelievable distances, 100 yards and more. #1 that is not true archery, these are not true bows but mechanical arrow launchers. You can't even put the word compound in the class of true archery. Now, having said this I have to say I have went from traditional archery to compound and back to traditional again. There is no doubt that the traditional bows are much funner to shoot and more rewarding once you learn to shoot them. I guess it comes down to, to each their own.

      there really is no reason other than to have the satisfaction of accomplishment by using old school tech. Obviously modern compounds put to shame recurves by any stretch of the string lol only thing recurves do better is the smooth draw and are much lighter to carry.

    • @freitag314
      @freitag314 8 років тому +3

      He does explain (briefly) that he believes a recurve bow will allow a quick shot from the ground before the deer can bolt. Absolutely trad bows are the best option in the brush where long shots don't exist and you don't have time to connect a mechanical string release, draw to anchor, line up various pins, etc. Trad bows take far more time to learn, shoot slower arrows, and have a shorter range. But trad bows are faster for short, quick shots.

    Why not shoot instinctive compound with no sights and fingers like Tim Wells or Guy Fitzgerald? No trad bow will push an arrow as fast as a compound, Heavy or light.

    • @jordanJohnn
      @jordanJohnn 8 років тому

      because recurve still have way more mobility and flexible methods to take shots. other words we can snap shoot and fire 3 arrows to your 1

    • @overcomerarchery2870

    • @jordanJohnn

      Its not the release its the pulleys.

    • @overcomerarchery2870
      @overcomerarchery2870 8 років тому

      There're cams, not pulleys. lol Actually my PSE Phenom is 36 ata, measuring 39 inches overall, still shorter than an old Bear Super mag 48. Mobility is A+, with more power and speed. I did the long bow and recurve thing for 10 years. Can't get an arrow to come close in FPE or FPS to my compound. But its all in what you like. No Trad person can say i have the advantage over them because I shoot fingers and no sights, the way it should be. take care.

    • @jordanJohnn
      @jordanJohnn 8 років тому

      It is a pulley system to reduce let off. Who cares i didn't say cams you knew what i ment. Its not length of the bow that gives you mobility its your flexibility to shoot. Compound has none. You have to be a robot. There's no snap shooting with compound or youll end up slipping of the cams. You guys always come back to fps. Bows are fast enough. You don't need any more fps then they offer these days. Recurve can get pass throughs depending on draw weight and iv personally never had a arrow miss decent placement due to a animal moving before it hit them. There fast enough. People should be more concerned with there skill not the bows doing the work for them. Bows are about skill building not getting the animal. Otherwise you may aswell just buy a gun.

    Traditional archery is like single speed mt. biking, the machine does less so you have to do more. In that sense expect it to be very rewarding.
    I think compounds are neat, but they are not what archery is to me.
    Expect to have to practice a lot depending on your aiming method... and get sore string fingers! But it'll be worth it!

    I quit using ‘contraption bows’ over 30 years ago after missing the chance to tag out one morning here in Arkansas. Climbed a bit too high & it really messed up my yardage guessing. Since then I’ve let allot of deer walk because that little light switch in my trad-only brain doesn’t flip to ‘shoot’em!’. Haven’t looked back since & enjoy the hunt much more. “Go Trad Or Crawl Back Under The Porch!” 😁

Ive killed squirrels and rabbits out to 45 yrds. Deer the longest ive killed one was 32yrds. Nothing wrong with going traditional. Ive not shot traditional in over a year. Ive brokes some ribs before the 2019 season had to hunt with a crossbow. Ive been shooting some already with my recurve. To get ready for this up coming season. Hoping to kill with my recurve this season. Ill also hunt a little with my crossbow. I will say this dont let them give you to hard of a time. I am switching too, for USAA spot shooting as well.i have a PSE Ghost ILF that is a real sweet shooter, NOS for 250 for a 450 bow. but it needs an ilf mount quiver, so i also grabbed a 139.00 PSE Night Hawk. also a good shooter and tapped for a quickee quiver. one of the things i dig about trad is it can go from mild to wild. classic Bear and Howatt are nice, as well as the more modern "trad" Trad tech etc. messing with fixed crawls and gap techniques , but really think i am going to work on papercup training and go full boat instinctive.

    Interesting. I started over a year ago shooting traditional archery. I have not hunted yet but want to so bad. I shoot two take down recurves, a bear traditional recurve and a PSE long bow.
    I competed a few months back at a Hunters Expo against all Compound bows. Didn't win but I did make the cut to the finals.
    I think that there is something of a real challenge to hunting on the ground with a traditional bow that you just don't have in the trees. If you can hunt from the ground and get a good kill I feel you have started to master the spirit.

    Good decision, here in Australia we all ground hunt. Shame some are going the tree stand way. Tree stand hunting is not hunting, it's not fair chase. I've shot more feral goats with a longbow I care to remember. All on the ground, walking and tracking. Don't go back to compound because compounds are not fun and archery should be fun. Any one can be accurate with a compound but trad takes a lot of practice. And no one email me back calling me a convict, I get sick of it from America. I'm a freeman.
