This is great advice. As a teen, I spent too much time trying to impress the wrong people. They were never going to appreciate me anyway. It took years to realize it.
Typical, you missed the point to change your own behavior but instead you put the blame on "them" being the wrong people who will never appreciate you. How about you do something appreciable and then not waiting for applause and celebrations of your great personality? The guy in the movie ignored the interactions with single persons, while trying to impress immediately a whole group. That's not how it works in reality.
From what I've heard, the people that were actually this age in this era hated these videos. All the younger people in the comments on these vids say that they wish they had this advice when they were in middle & high school. Interesting social commentary.
trying so hard to fit in is desperation. it's clearly obvious that they don't want Mike around them. he should've just leave them alone and find new friends to hang with. It's one thing to be yourself but trying so hard to win people over to belong is another.
This is actually a very good instructional film for the time! Encouraging friendly, gradual socialization, and neither dull conformity or outrageous attention-grabbing to win friends and influence people.
Make friends individually - that's what I try to do now. For years I was of the "feeling like a social outcast mentality"; I still feel that way sometimes, but when I don't feel quite so badly, I try to do the first one.
This old vintage film reminds me of Leave it to Beaver reruns. 1950’s America for older people has a lot of nostalgia. But the reality of the times was far more grim than what television or films were showing, due to strict censorship, and numerous rules & regulations preventing vulgar language and revealing themes from making thru.
Because the hairstyles are cool and they have nice smiles. No neck beards. And of course because even with all the pimples covered by zit cream, they were cute enough to get cast as an average teen. (as the other reply mentioned. And the other reply mentioned they were white. Well, of course they were white. Americans in the 1950's were 75% white as a whole. 13% black, and 7% Central/South American, including PR and Cuba, and about 3% Asian. In parts of California and Texas, it's almost 70% Mexican.
Of course they were white, silly! 75% of the US citizenry in the 1950's were originally white Europeans. 13% black, nearly all of whom were concentrated in the Southeast, 3% Asian, and 7% Central and South American (including Cuba and Puerto Rico...always remember, Senorita, Lucy in "I Love Lucy" was married to a Cubano!) Pragmatic advise before the "self-esteem" movement started invading public education. Instead of people learning to define who they are, improve themselves, add value, and find the right crowd; you have top-down social engineering to force incompatible groups together, causing more friction than harmony. This is resulting in even worse cliques and more social isolation of individuals with problems.
