Gimme Hope Jo'anna Lyrics
Well Jo'anna she runs a country
She runs in Durban and the Transvaal
She makes a few of her people happy, oh
She don't care about the rest at all
She's got a system they call apartheid
It keeps a brother in a subjection
But maybe pressure will make Jo'anna see
How everybody could have live as one
Oh, Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
'Fore the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope, Jo'anna
Hope before the morning come
I hear she makes all the golden money
To buy new weapons, any shape of guns
While every mother in black Soweto fears
The killing of another son
Sneakin' across all the neighbors' borders
Now and again having little fun
She doesn't care if the fun and games she play
Is dangerous to everyone
Oh, gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
'Fore the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope before the morning come
She's got supporters in higher places
Who turn their heads to the city sun
Jo'anna give them the fancy money
Oh, to tempt anyone who'd come
She even knows how to swing opinion
In every magazine and the journals
For every bad move that this Jo'anna make
They got a good explanation
Oh, gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
'Fore the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope before the morning come
Even the preacher who works for Jesus
The Archbishop who's a peaceful man
Together say that the freedom fighters
Will overcome the very strong
I wanna know if you're blind Jo'anna
If you wanna hear the sound of drum
Can't you see that the tide is turning
Oh don't make me wait till the morning come
Oh, go give me hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
'Fore the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope before the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
'Fore the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope before the morning come
A happy song about a dark time in South African history. Joanna was Eddie's name for Johannesburg the city of gold. So... we have come so far since those sad days, but sadly Joanna still needs hope, with a failing economy, no employment, power cuts, corruption and potholes that could swallow a car. But this song lifts the spirits as SA will rise again.
Thanks for the reference
What a beautiful and sombre explanation. It's that song that you dance and sing along to with tears in your eyes. How sadness and joy coexists is an irony and anomaly only the years of life sadly teaches us.
Jah bless you all
Gracias 🙂
So glad the British ain't yet again been blamed 4 others weakness I was 10 last time I heard this I'm now 43
I'm a born-free South African. This is the first time I read the lyrics. I'm grateful for the freedom of every South African. I'm glad we can love and embrace one another ❤🇿🇦
Best song ever on apartheid and oppression, under the guise of a love and funny song. Genius
Damn son, the songtext is actually really dark and serious
Beautiful song, awesome melody, good happy beat but a very tragiccally sad true story. Salute to the courageous artist for sending the msg.
What a song!
Love and hugs from Kenya to S.A 🫂
I've seen Eddy Grant live a view years ago, as the support act for ub40. He whas great!
Sometimes the only decision you can make is to chose between you swallow that it is what it is and cry OR you swallow that it is what it is and laugh, sing and dance. Well, it doesn't change a single thing, circumstances will remain the same, but who said you could not keep smiling and hoping for better times coming?
Played this in the operational area. In the bar at Rhundu base. Great times.
Bravo amigo🎉
Good man
Lovely tune by Joanna
What a song😊

Love this song❤❤❤❤❤
For decades I thought the Vietnam war and Apartheid would never end and that the Berlin wall would never come down. Even though its 50 years since the Vietnam war ended and 30 years since Apartheid and the wall came down I still have very strong memories of those times because they happened when I was young and a lasting effect.
and now you think they'll never come back. You're still so naive
I loveeeeeeeeeeee the song

I love it so much,bt I really don't understand it,
Joana represent the white oppressors
It's about the appartheid that was stablished in South Àfrica. In this song, the city of Johannesburg is a woman called Jo'anna. Jo'anna in fact represents the white colonial power that is trying to keep the society separted between black and white people. He talks about corruption and violence but as beeing in a system that is corrupted, he has to use this symbolic structure to criticise this political groups that could go after him if the message was more clear. 😊💓

They need to do a cover version of this song titled “Gaza give me hope” as a protest song against the Israeli apartheid. 🇵🇸🇵🇸
Considering that most of the Arab countries Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Yemen and Morocco made their countries judenrein in the 40's, I'd say you should be more considered about ARAB apartheid. Yes it means Jew free.
Israel isnt Arab free: there are Arab Christians, Arab Muslims, Druze, Christians etc.
Yes we were throughout the ME, we were in every country because THAT IS WHERE WE ARE FROM. And yes we were there before Muslims.
Bethlehem and Nazareth are two small cities in Israel that once upon a time were mostly Christian. Today they are less than 20% because Muslims are pushing them out. Copts, Maronites (older original sects of Christianity) are attacked in Egypt and Lebanon. I doubt there are any left in Syria.
Kurds, Druze, Yazidis are all under attack. Not from Jews, but from Muslims.
What are you talking about?
