- Crank up your speakers and enjoy a collection of up close, ground shaking loud Lockheed C-5 Galaxy takeoffs and landings!
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is the biggest airplane in the United States Air Force fleet and one of the biggest in the world, With the famously loud General Electric TF-39 engines used on the C-5 A & B being phased out for the upgraded C-5M Super Galaxy I decided to piece together my best footage together of this screaming giant into 5 minutes.
I love and miss the sound of the TF-39!
I do too!
So do i and they used to make touch and go landings here at Bangor International and now the C5M's do a lot but they just do not have that nice sound so i rarely watch them.
The Ultimate rock band will be called TF-39.
Britt Unculus. Sadly, the C-M, does not have that cool sound :(.
@@CharlieGordonRailfan In that case, they'll just have to be called "THE GALAXIANS". ( can you believe getting this post 4 years later--hello? Anyone still out there?!)
I remember when I first heard about the program as it was being envisioned in the mid 1960's. My great uncle used to read the Wall Street Journal and he mentioned it to me as we were driving past the Charleston AFB just as a C-141 was taking off..."it will be twice the size of that airplane"...I remember seeing the first units become operable in 1970 in Charleston. Years later I would qualify as a C-5 Instructor FE and logged over 7000 hours on it.

Greetings from Charleston, s.c.
Just what I was looking for; screaming TF-39s!!!
I grew up a few miles north of the Lockheed factory in Georgia where these planes were produced. Whenever we heard that distinctive sound we'd run outside to see the unbelievably huge plane going by.
I know the new engines are more efficient and require less maintenance, but they make the C-5 sound just like any other big fan airliner. A big part of FRED's personality has always been the ungodly scream of those TF-39s.
Agreed, and it is easily recognized by sound only.
Like the Cessna 337 skymaster which is a pusher/ puller propeller airplane
@@philmontejano5971 ...ah yes, the "Mixmaster".
Absolutely! GE's TF39 engine are very unique in regards to its sound. No other engine has the sound that the TF39 possesses.
Still one of my favorite sounds. I hope they leave atleast 1 with the TF39s such an amazing sound
the best sound screaming
Greetings from Townsville, Australia, had a C 5 land at RAAF Townsville today. The turbines are the best sounding thing I've ever heard on an aircraft. Just wish I could have recorded it but flat battery lol. Thanks for posting this, much respect
Who the heck put thumbs down here? The Galaxy rocks! Love that scream!
Played it on a chromecast on the TV with surround cranked up. My God!!
Love the sound of a C-5. It always sounds like the engines are winding down.
Doppler effect. But the sound is indeed ominous...
I wonder if GE intended for those engines to sound that awesome 💪
This makes me smile.
good thing I didn't have my coffee this morning cuz I didn't need it after watching this video. the best 4 minutes and 43 seconds of my mornings.
saved the best for last..outstanding! thanks for the memories
Reverse thrust! Hell yeah !
I've watched this video numerous times and still get giddy every time I play it..
I love this with the original engines...🤗😁👍
I love that sound, so unique to this big bird 😁
Okay I'm a little late when most of the comments were three and four years ago but I'm watching this for the first time and I must say the C-5 landing and taking off it's like poetry in motion! Excellent video nicely done!
All I can say is DAMN....LOL Thats one bird thats earned its title of Screaming Giant
"I'm too big to fly, I'm too big to fly, I'm too big t.....HEY, I can fly"!!!!! Lol.
The plane that "Taxis into the Air".
The best music on the planet!
Oh, oh the screaming!!!❤❤❤❤
So massive yet so graceful at take-off.. I could watch these videos all day
i really love this agressive sound!
i've heard it during the iraq mission in frankfurt, germany...
i stood at the end of the runway and it was ... a bad mistake!
that was so dam loud!!!
ok, i'd do it again today or tomorrow!
really impressive!
greetings from hamburg, germany!
..I remember when 747s sounded like that. The C-5 is still an impressive aeroplane
Very nice work. I had a chance to be up close to a few C-5's at AAFB, they are definitely screamers:)
That C-5 Galaxy is a great looking airplane, and it does leave your ears ringing from the noise of the engines when they take off or land. I worked around them at Travis, and Dover AFB's and I knew immediately what airplane it was coming in or going out by the sounds of the engines.
I went inside one of those at the Australian International Airshow last year. They're really massive and the same size as the Boeing 747 but with different engines.
WOW! Talk about C-5 Galaxy visual overload! I've never seen so much take-off's and landings in one sitting! THANK YOU!
What an amazing bird!!!! Excellent videography!!
oooooooh the reverse thrusters in the end......
What is that lovely ring?!❤❤❤❤
Wow! Truly amazing,i just can't get enough of that sound. Thanks for sharing this awesome video
It`s now the whispering giant.
There are lots of nice Fred video's online. As a SSgt with the 619 MASS @ Hickam in '82 - 86 I had my engine run license on Fred. I used to love running 4 engines to max power on 20 alpha, 20 baker and 20 charlie rows. Always a great big rush, I had a great deal of respect for the capabilities of the C-5. The late model TF-39's put out 176,000 pounds of thrust collectively. A very large and serious acft, one of the best I ever put my hands on. We had a slogan, your not a jet engine mechanic until you changed the BIG one!
Now that's an epic sound!
I remember seeing these planes flying over when I went to the pathway school in Norristown.
Of course the ge tf39 will be sorely missed when it will be phased out completely.
BEAUTIFUL SOUND GÉNÉRAL ÉLECTRIC TF-39G1
Love these Galaxy's specially when couple are from Westover ARB in Chicopee MA.
Grew up in that area and grew up listening to these. Still in the area and the new ones don't sound the same.
I remember when all, "heavy" jets sounded like that. The early 747s did it, and to a lesser degree, L-1011s and DC-10s. That "beefy" heavy sound was common around airports. One after another. In hindsight, I realize what great times those were.
Muscle cars sounded better back in the day too!
One word : AMAZING !
This makes me feel like a kid again! Used to watch these come in every year for the air show. As an adult I got to see them in action flying in and out of the base where I was in Iraq, that sounds never gets old!
AMAZING video man!! The c-5 is one of my favorite aircraft :D I loved it so much!! Thanks a lot for posting! :D what a sound!! Very nice work!!!!
I had a lot of memories and flying hours in the C-5 traveling overseas since I was an infant with my family. My dad served and now retired after being in the U.S. Navy for 26 years. The last time I was in the C-5 was when I was 13 years old. Flew from Clark AFB, Philippines to Hickam AFB, Hawaii for an overnight layover to Luke AFB, Arizona for another overnight layover and finally arrived at Travis AFB, Cali in 1990. But had to switch to a commercial flight to LA. What I miss about the C-5, is climbing up the ladder to our seats. It was cold, had to wear ear plugs(a lot louder inside) and especially facing towards the rear of the plane. Our flight attendants were the flight crew passing our meals. LOL But overall, it was a great experience traveling numerous times in these Military cargo planes such as the C-141 and C-130. Just wanted to add one more thing, the pilots were so nice to have the kids go up to the cockpit and watch them fly.
Fantastic engine sound.
Love the first little clip! The engines!!! GE, I believe....
Nothing screams American muscle like the C-5 Galaxy. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💪🏼
These occasionally fly over our area and you cannot help put just pause and watch. Incredible.
Amazing Sounds I like how the engines scream
INCREDIBLE footage ... thanks so much for sharing!!
A lot of these older jets are now retired and today all we have is the C-5 M models.
this is youtube at its best... I wish all the videos uploaded were of this quality... thank you...
I don't think its gets much more impressive than this... the things man makes geez...
Never gets old!
Made for a smooth flight a few times when I was in the Army, but ear plugs were nice to have during the flight.
Trigger730 sooo agreeed!!!!!!
I love that airplane!!! I wish I could fly aboard one of those.

Amazing machine, amazing sound; beautifully captured. Many thanks once again.
Superb!
Now that sound is absolutely MINDBLOWING!!! I felt like I was at classical music concert since it was just so beautiful!! Incredible video man, amazing catches and filming! Liked for sure :D
Thank you so much as always!
***** Yeah, I know right.
Feels like I'm in an airplane whenever it passes by my house
I stood right next to a C5 at mildenhall at the private viewing area which is very close to the runway. when it opened up to max power it was just to much for my ears, I was trying to video it but had to put my phone in my pocket so I could cover my ears. Jeez that thing screams, SIMPLY AWESOME
Awesome video tribute to a wonderful screaming lady..
Great video, great capture, fantastic sound. Thanks for sharing.
Love watching this.
The best! Thanks for putting this amazing video together!

RyanBomar It's my ring tone now...
Came here to see what these sounded like, Used to work at the local airport for Trans World on evenings i would wait for the cargo planes to depart. Still love that sound..but... these are moving up in my book ~ wow.............. !
Beautiful!
SPECTACULAR video!!! C-5, king of all airplanes!
I think I'm in love..
Great video and sound! Thanks, 235FireFly.
thank you i love it.. C5 baby
The sound of this plane's engines will go down in history! I think to myself how well this giant does around the world transporting medicine, food, wounded and weapons to defend people at risk! God bless the engineers who made it and the crews that take them to heaven!
ABSOLUTELY AWWWWWWWESOME!
Long live the TF-39
Turn up the volume and enjoy the music made by this engines. Huge Like!!!
Probably one of the sexiest cargo planes.
Que sonido de motores tan espectacular! Máximo performance aeronáutico.
Very, very well done vid and audio.
Next to the Rolls Royce Merlins, the greatest sounding engine ever produced.
With my university being only 3 miles from Soesterberg AB, right underneath the flightpath, I could hear inside the college hall (which basically was a concrete tub without windows, inside a concrete building without windows) whether it was a KC-135 (A or E model), a C-141B, or the loudest of all: a C-5. As I had enough time between realising what was coming ad seeing it outside, every single timeI ran outside to hear the screaming giant. And yes, I finished university with high grades ;-)
The orginal sound of westover’s 16 C5A’s later c5b’s, and then the 8 c5b’s that remained here until their engine upgrades won’t be forgotten, this is the badass sound I grew up listening to, sounded better than modern rap on today’s radio lmao!
WOW - some really stunning footage there! The Galaxy still is the mightiest of them all & looks menacing in the overall gray paintscheme. Great vid - thanks for sharing! :-)
Awesome video best C5B on the web.
Frank Guyton There are also some C-5As
nothing beats that sound of those turbines
thanks for that perfect videos
Now that is what i call Absolutely INSANE!!! HUGE LIKE FOR THOSE SCREAMINGLY AWESOME ENGINES!!!! :D

Awesome video!
Great video
im gonna miss the old TF-39 roar
Screaming into retirement.. :(
Now, why not putting ALL your C-5 Galaxy with TF39s together?
Beautiful aircraft
I've only been fortunate enough to catch one here in St. John's in person. That was summer of 2013, it had a missed approach and hauled up and across the east end of town, and directly over my house. I thought the windows were coming out of my house.
Great Great Video of the big bad Fat Boy....Was AFRES and had the opportunity to fly in a C-5 once......Yuma MCA to Peterson with a stop at Biggs....Will never forget it....
Nice video.
Nothing better than quadriphonic TF-39s.
