I currently main Ike along with Luigi as a primary (Mario and Marth as a secondary main). I win a lot with Ike because he can KO opponents very quickly. :)
Ike is a deadly character like he said you have to be smart to use him if he is used the right way then he's unstoppable to his opponents that's why I love using him
I actually do really well with Ike against competitive players, even Samus specialists. It really is all about knowing your opponents and having a great feel for timing, spacing, baiting, and movement. Quick draw is great for closing distance, and punishing slow projectile users. It's really satisfying causing so much rage with a character so many dismiss.
"even samus specialists" that isn't exactly a accomplishment considering samus is considered an even worse character than ike competitively. Ike only has a slight disadvantage against samus. Try to hold your own with ike against a competitive ice climber player, where your slow ass moves can all end up leading you into getting chaingrab infinited by the ice climbers. If you can hold your own with ike against an Ice climber player that knows what they're doing, THAT'S an accomplishment.
Im clearly 2 - 3 years late for this BUT one of Ike's easier combos were down grabbing and opponent and immediately going into a B UP. You can follow up with an air attack if you like,
Ah man, I remember the good old days of getting pushed back while shielding and trying to jab out of pressure, only to get pushed off the ledge and have a nair buffered and falling to your death.
Short hop down air is pretty good I’ve had it cover most rolls I’ve faced (even Samus) and you can drift a bit to the right or left with it. I exclusively use it on stage since Offstage is just accepting death usually
Funny how, after about 7 years since I last saw this video, it randomly popped into my recommendations. Still enjoyed it like I did during the first time, gave a a good wave of nostalgia.
But Ike did come back with Chrom and Roy in Ultimate! That’s when I started playing Marth, Ike and Roy! They are favourite characters playing with Dark Pit, Toon Link and Pichu
neon flashsparkotron Uh, what? his right special can get countered from zelda, his upward special is just bad, his attacks are slow and he flys up pretty easily. He doesnt have many power attacks to finish people off ect ect id say timings important but whats to time?
I'd recommend adding bthrow to dash attack. Its really important for ike mains to know. I don't think I saw it in the video and its guaranteed on almost every character (within proper percents). I think there is a smash boards thread detailing it. there's also the fthrow infinite on walls. I apologize if I didn't see it, but I think it could help a lot of people.
I really enjoyed this guide, thanks; I'll be applying it to Sm4sh. Also, very much appreciate the slow mo demos after showing the regular speed demos; it made it so much easier to see and learn.
i like to use the counter attack move when i jump into the middle of all the enemies... but it seems like they stop hitting right before i use the counter and i end up running away from 3 bots that run way faster than me :I
Why is Ike ranked 23rd in Brawl? In my opinion, he should be high tier because he can KO everyone fast with a lot of moves even though he's one of the slowest moving characters. He's even better than Marth because of Ike's superior KO ability. Most characters have a hard time fighting against Meta knight. Ike is a very good character to play as overall even though his tier list position doesn't match up with his greatness.
Ike is a lousy character who's slow moves won't hit any decent player. No half-decent player will ever be hit by ikes quick draw, forward smash, up smash, up tilt, forward tilt, down smash, pretty much all of his moves that can reliably kill. also its clear you never faced any decent marth before, otherwise you'd realize his insane aerial game and solid ground game put him miles ahead of ike in viability. A good marth has no trouble at all killing ike insanely early, once ike's forced offstage he's screwed. But by all means, you can use your ike against my marth ;) we've only got a few days left till the shutdown, lets see what happens....
xxTheFallenAngelxxx I know that Ike may have trouble KO opponents if he can't hit anybody because of his reduced speed. When he actually attacks an opponent, he can KO opponents around 100%. Most people I know don't really play as Marth that much, but I have a few friends who like to pick Ike. That's the main reason why I started playing as Ike as well. He's officially my number one main in Brawl along with Luigi because he also has high KO power (but still is weaker than Ike). As far as playing Brawl online is concerned, I'll probably play it this Thursday and the weekend before the Wi-Fi shutdown. :(
I'm referring specifically to his final smash, since all you need to do to land the full combo is hit with that initial strike, since you don't have to worry about the damage on that strike anyway it makes for a good way to surprise someone
-back) As for the trick with the sliding counter, it's not as hard as you would think. As you charge quick draw, release the frame before he goes into his landing animation. This will cause a huge increase in momentum that makes him almost slide while walking/running forward. Do the counter right when you see ike start his walk animation. So basically, quick draw one frame above landing, wait for ike to start walking, and then do counter immediatly as you see the animation. Good luck Ike players
tap the control stick the same time you tap the standard attack button. If you hold both the stick and button, you can charge it before letting go. However, the charge has a limited time, so don't think you can hold it indefinatly
I think that Ike is an actually an AMAZING character if you are playing on a small, tournament stage, because his air is almost unbeatable, and once an opponent is knocked of the edge of a platform, jabs, eruption and even up tilt will allow you to lock any character into a death loop trying to recover, provided that they do not receive more than 3 jumps. (I believe this because I play Sheik/Zelda if Meta-knight is banned, so this may be biased :P)
@ExelDling17 Tier lists do have a point, it's a way to define which characters are better than others in a general sense. If someone of your caliber was equally as good with Meta Knight as you are with Ganondorf, chances are, he'll win because Meta is MUCH better than Ganon. The tier list is also defined by how well the characters do in tournaments. In Japan Pit is A-tier and here Pit is E-tier. It it's all to interpretation it obviously doesn't account for preference or level of practice.
His down smash is pretty good in some cases. People who don't usually play as Ike, when you're using it, will sidestep behind you and won't see the second hit coming. It can also hit people who are directly behind you.
But what happens if they see you whiff? Ike's Dsmash is EXTREMELY laggy if you miss and they are in front of you, which means they have the combined time of the first and second hit, PLUS the endlag to punish you, which means you'll usually be hit much harder than your Dsmash.
I'm a experienced Ike user and I still benefited from this vid, but the n-air to jab to grab was not mentioned as well as using QuickDraw with a sliding reversed f-smash or u- smash for a mind game or a down tilt for a surprise spike off the edge. Also a down grab to aether is ok for damage racking
There's not much explanation needed for the final smash anyway. It kills at about 60% (lower in certain situations). It deals about 60% damage as well, making it a good way to dish out damage The smash attack is triggered by an upward slash that leads into a combo on whoever it connects with. The range is deceptive, and you can often clip someone with the edge of the hitbox and nail them when they think they're safe, that's the big tip for it.
as for his counter, I think ike is better off using as he's falling. The slight delay allows the player to better time the counter as he lands. I always use it when going up against edge guarding. Plus, the counter slows down ike's fall, which can be useful in some areas. If you get the timing, you can counter the person who's trying to attack you as you're falling. Then as he slowly falls below the ledge, time his aether to grab the ledge immediatly after the animation finishes. (continue)-
Same here. I would absolutely love to see Mia in the Smash Bros 4 as she is one of my favorite characters from anything and I would main her but that's not going to happen.
there is 1 more combo with Ike, if you use Ike's down grab then use his up special you can get good damage on the opponent, if there's nothing above you the damage will be greater then a platform you can go through will make the damage less so it's recomened to use this where there is nothing in the area.(found this out by seeing ProtonJonSA use Ike.)
@ExelDling17 the tier list isnt about the learning curve, its about people who have the same skill and use different characters, its actually accurate and mk is better than ganon, NO QUESTIONS ASKED
I never played as Ike in tournaments, but I do pretty well with him in online matches as he racks up KOs like it's nobody's business. I think the reason I do so well with Ike against Meta Knight, Snake, Falco, and Toon Link players is because no one expects much from Ike until he sends them flying more often than expected. When timed well, his Counter works fan-friggin'-tastic against Meta Knight's cheaper moves like the Mach Tornado and Drill Rush.
Ike is actually good at comboing. Bthrow to Dash Attack is a true combo at mid percents on most characters. Then jab 1 and 2 can combo into jab 1, Utilt or grab. Ike's jab cancelling can even lead to 30%+ damage. Ike is mostly a spacing (makes his moves much harder to punish especially his aerials), punishing and a character designed for hard reads. Also I find Dair to be an above average spike because its vertical disjointed hitbox is so big that it beats almost every Up b when timed right.
that neutal special eruption i find works really well if u get smashed in the air and got some fall distance cause of the huge hit box and u can't be stopped once u release, along with major damage so it forces opponents to leave u alone or get blasted
Counter is in fact useful since Ike is slow you can counter fast characters using the hammer and instead of the Down-Air Attack I use Eruption. Aether can be used to attack through solid platforms to attack Hiders.
The reason I removed the comment was because I mad a mistype. I understand what you mean. I suppose that could work against aggressive players if used correctly. I just don't see Ike's counter working against fast characters because the start up time for Ike's counter is so long that you can't use it in reaction to the opponent's move. But hey if counter's working for you then by all means use it. Nice to here you have skill and that you don't need a creed for it.
Oh wow! That's almost the same mains as mine! My first main was Ike, then Meta Knight, then Wolf, then Falco, and now for about the last two years it's been Pit. My mains are Pit, Ike, Falco, Lucario, and Peach. I've tried getting good with Lucario so many times and can never get the hand of him but I try cause he's awesome! As for Peach I'm awful at her but she's so fun to play so I keep trying with her as well. Yeah Ike'e forward aerial is a key move to winning with Ike.
ike and meta knight are my favorite characters including ike beacause his attacks are super powerful and the thing that is hte best of him in my opinion i his final smash
Also u can cancel the jab on the first jab over and over then lead into a back air before your opponent di's out of it. Also you can forward chain grab a opponent if they are backed up against a wall.
Upthrow is not useless: Upthrow --> UP + B --> (when in you're back in the ground) A + A +A -- > Side + B --> (by this point you opponet should be outside the stage trying to reach for one side) --> (all options) a) jump and down + A, b) Wait for him in the border Side + A (smash) c) Down + A
Sonic's speed and manuverability is there to offset his lack of power attacks; to use him effectively you need to combo your oppenent offscreen or gimp them until they fall. While he does have amazing potential, he also has (imo) the highest learning curve of any character in brawl, so he's nothing to complain about. If you want to complain about a character that can be abused with a ridiculous amount of practice, you should see desynched IC's. Game breaking if the technique is perfected.
Although doing an up throw or a down throw would put the target right in the hit area of an Aether, I found myself doing that toward the beginning of matches to build up damage quicker...
I actually found a good Combo for Ike. Down Throw the Aether, it can do some good damage, and in alot of cases brings down the oppenent to follow up with something else.
another tip for Ike is if you have these people that like to juggle you ikes eruption will stop them in their tracks, if used at the right time that is.
i play ike, i like ike. my friends all fear that big platinum sword as, just as you say, its deadly. some things i took away from this video were his up tils on ground attack and his back air attack. my strategies all involved great timing with his side smash and neutral smash attacks but i think if i work these in ill be a better player for it. thanks for the video.
Ike was my favorite character in Brawl... my main at that. He was pretty slow so 1v1 fights with faster characters was not too easy... i find him to be better in 3-4 player fights
Didn't talk about jab canceling :\ the most vital technique to using Ike. you did talk about comboing out of jab, but didn't mention the jab canceling part or mention comboing jab 1 out of jab 1. (basically doing jab 1 repeatably) Luckily you linked a good guide
in all honesty, i was basing the legitimacy of your entire guide on what you would say about ike's back aerial attack. i wasn't disappointed :). no doubt his aerial back attack is the trump card that can mean do or die, and noticing this means you've got skill as a brawl player =P
another really good combo is to grab ur opponent then throw them off the edge of map then if they jump towards the map to recovery, watch closely, cuz if they jump over the edge that they grab onto, then use ur Aether then when ur going down, looks like going to die by taking out ur opponent with you, but instead, ike grabs the ledge and sends the opponent downwards toward the bottom offscreen. i use this multiple times on online and its really fun to do. try it out. :)
Mine's too. Mine's was Ike at first and as son as I got Brawl. Then it changed to Toon Link, then Wolf, and now it's Metaknight and i'm keeping it at Metaknight because I really like him. Ike is now my second best and Ike can defeat a MK player with his forward aerial and up special as MK has a hard time escaping does because of his short air release. MK can easily chaingrab Ike because Ike is a fast faller.
i'm scared to watch the video. Already seeing some of the noob comments make me facepalm...I really wonder how folks are struggling against ike this late in brawl's lifespan....really....have you people not learned to dodge and/or shield yet? have you not figured out how slow most of ikes moves are that have such long startup and ending time that they're easy as hell to dodge?
i got +9 in BB on halberd (usmash) in a 1v1 with 2 cpus. my only death was an SD. it was a link but dem scrubs play the two the same, save for the arrow spam.
Down air: nothing to mention? At the edge, back throw into short hop down air is an almost guaranteed kill to most characters! Edit:I forgot to mention this does require your opponent to use their double jump ASAP. Also, this kills most at 0.
I agree but the "if you have someone fast" part is my only problem with what you said. I know that there are characters that can beat Ike without much issue, but Smash is one of the few fighting games that a lot of people find that all characters are balanced to the point where they can choose one based on personal preference instead of who's better (unlike games like Injustice/Mortal Kombat and other BS). People shouldn't be forced to use characters they don't want to to have a fair chance.
Same here man! I play Ike because I've played the Fire Emblem games he's from and he is awesome! Ike can actually be pretty good. It just takes a lot of practice and patience. I've seen good Ike players beat pretty good Meta Knight players. It took me a long time before I got good at him. So who's your best?
Ike is a medium-tier character and usually not used in tournaments, while meta-knight is officially considered as "overpowered". Some casual players just thinking Ike is OP cause he hits rly hard, but hes one of the slowest characters in the game..
a way that i have found to up tilt with a gamecube controller is pretty simple all i do is i just turn tap jump off (tap jump in case you didnt know is what it is called when using a gamecube controller and you jump by moving the control stick up) and then just use up on the control stick and the a button.
Can someone PLEASE answer this for me. With a WII REMOTE, how do you use a characters up tilt? I know with the forward and down tilts you basically hold the arrow down before you press the "2", but with the up tilt, by doing that, you jump. So how is it done?
Backwards Throw + Downwards Neutral Air(Spike) = usually instant kill. Depends on how floaty the other players character is. Puts them in perfect position as most people will jump when they get thrown off the edge :D.
I'm reading so many comments about how up-throw/d-throw --> Aether is a legit combo. IT'S NOT. The opponent just has to hold left/right on the control stick to evade any sort of follow-up from you. In fact, the Aether will probably leave you wide open for a punish.
I always loved Ike. His style fits mine like a glove.
His style fits mine like Aether fits him.
Ike is hella fun in a 4 player free for all XD He racks up the kills so easily.
Ike is my favorite, I always win as him
true that
I currently main Ike along with Luigi as a primary (Mario and Marth as a secondary main). I win a lot with Ike because he can KO opponents very quickly. :)
I know right

Mine too

Ike’s voice actor in Brawl was the absolute best and nobody can tell me otherwise.
And the sword sound effects. RIP
Me: Ike, do you want coffee or tea?
Ike: EITHER!
XD
Nice One Dude😄👌👍
LMFAO
Ike is a deadly character like he said you have to be smart to use him if he is used the right way then he's unstoppable to his opponents that's why I love using him
I really like Ike. He's so powerful
Ike is my main
Yeah he is pretty versatile in everything.
Same
same but im not a dingus part of the crowd i know his timings really well
Colin King As do most Ike mains-
I actually do really well with Ike against competitive players, even Samus specialists. It really is all about knowing your opponents and having a great feel for timing, spacing, baiting, and movement. Quick draw is great for closing distance, and punishing slow projectile users. It's really satisfying causing so much rage with a character so many dismiss.
"even samus specialists"
that isn't exactly a accomplishment considering samus is considered an even worse character than ike competitively.

I always loved ike. Still do lmao.
Same here!
Combos? In Brawl? This is illegal
Going to use this guide to help perfect my Ike game, going into a tourney Saturday at Anime North, going to main him
Ares Cochrane judging from the profile picture im assuming you stuck with him as a main?
Ike please come back to Smash Bros 4 with chrome & especially Roy XD!!!!!!!
wow you predicted the future
Nah he didn't, Chrom is just a Mii costume (also Robin's final smash) in that game
Soo..
But Ike did come back with Chrom and Roy in Ultimate! That’s when I started playing Marth, Ike and Roy! They are favourite characters playing with Dark Pit, Toon Link and Pichu
@@luckyoof9146 thats not what he predicted, he said Smash 4. even then, he was wrong about Chrom.
best character

I'm referring specifically to his final smash, since all you need to do to land the full combo is hit with that initial strike, since you don't have to worry about the damage on that strike anyway it makes for a good way to surprise someone
-back) As for the trick with the sliding counter, it's not as hard as you would think. As you charge quick draw, release the frame before he goes into his landing animation. tap the control stick the same time you tap the standard attack button.

You do not know how many times I performed a hard punish on Ike's Dsmash.
It can be deadly, but at the same time unreliable.
More unreliable than it is deadly.
I'm a experienced Ike user and I still benefited from this vid, but the n-air to jab to grab was not mentioned as well as using QuickDraw with a sliding reversed f-smash or u- smash for a mind game or a down tilt for a surprise spike off the edge. Also a down grab to aether is ok for damage racking

is it bad that i still play this in 2022?
Absolutely not
as for his counter, I think ike is better off using as he's falling. The slight delay allows the player to better time the counter as he lands. I always use it when going up against edge guarding. Also u can cancel the jab on the first jab over and over then lead into a back air before your opponent di's out of it. Also you can forward chain grab a opponent if they are backed up against a wall.
Came for nostalgia, 2019
Last time I checked, I come here to watch the video
and I don't think I've posted any negative comments about you
Upthrow is not useless: Upthrow --> UP + B --> (when in you're back in the ground) A + A +A -- > Side + B --> (by this point you opponet should be outside the stage trying to reach for one side) --> (all options) a) jump and down + A, b) Wait for him in the border Side + A (smash) c) Down + A
Sonic's speed and manuverability is there to offset his lack of power attacks; to use him effectively you need to combo your oppenent offscreen or gimp them until they fall.
While he does have amazing potential, he also has (imo) the highest learning curve of any character in brawl, so he's nothing to complain about.
If you want to complain about a character that can be abused with a ridiculous amount of practice, you should see desynched IC's. Game breaking if the technique is perfected.
@IcyFlameFilms Obviously it comes down to preference, but according to the tier list, it's Snake, then Marth.
Although doing an up throw or a down throw would put the target right in the hit area of an Aether, I found myself doing that toward the beginning of matches to build up damage quicker...
What characters does that combo work on? Sandbag?
2024??
Why of course
What is the song in the background that you are using? It's good.
I like using his down throw into an upspecial. As long as you can hit with it, it deals a lot of damage
Didn't talk about jab canceling :\ the most vital technique to using Ike. you did talk about comboing out of jab, but didn't mention the jab canceling part or mention comboing jab 1 out of jab 1. (basically doing jab 1 repeatably) Luckily you linked a good guide
could you do an update for all your guides for smash 4?
in all honesty, i was basing the legitimacy of your entire guide on what you would say about ike's back aerial attack. i wasn't disappointed :). no doubt his aerial back attack is the trump card that can mean do or die, and noticing this means you've got skill as a brawl player =P
whats the recommended controller style for brawl?
dude, youre awesome in explaining this shit, i yhink I love ike even more!
Fun tip for Ike in brawl: play him in sample m bath. Practically impossible to be beaten if you space attacks right and know how to use him well.
Thanks for the video, starting to play Project M and Ike is much better. Probably still mid-low tier, but I think he has amazing potential.
another really good combo is to grab ur opponent then throw them off the edge of map then if they jump towards the map to recovery, watch closely, cuz if they jump over the edge that they grab onto, then use ur Aether then when ur going down, looks like going to die by taking out ur opponent with you, but instead, ike grabs the ledge and sends the opponent downwards toward the bottom offscreen. i use this multiple times on online and its really fun to do. try it out. :)
You can use Ike's forward throw as a chain grab on a wall
Thanks so much for this. Just got Smash 4 and needed some tips. Please get SSB4 and do another review!
Sliding quickdraw to a up smash is good for surprise edgeguards and surprise attacks overall.
What does the counter thing?
Ike is a medium-tier character and usually not used in tournaments, while meta-knight is officially considered as "overpowered". Some casual players just thinking Ike is OP cause he hits rly hard, but hes one of the slowest characters in the game..
I'm fairly new to this game and mainly use Link. But Ike really has an appeal because I like swords so much lol
This series is so good.
Also LUCARIO SWEET. Glad you're not doing all top-tiers.
a way that i have found to up tilt with a gamecube controller is pretty simple all i do is i just turn tap jump off (tap jump in case you didnt know is what it is called when using a gamecube controller and you jump by moving the control stick up) and then just use up on the control stick and the a button.
Jab combo+Eruption Straight after-THATS considerable damage, as well as opening an opportunity to juggle.
Awesome!Character! I main IKE. Takes a lot of strategizing to play IKE.
I might look like a noob saying this but...
How do I use the up tilt?
I keep doing the charge up thing
