Tyla "Water" Official Lyrics & Meaning | Genius Verified

- South African star Tyla stopped by Genius to discuss her global hit “Water." The Grammy nominated single was recently remixed with Travis Scott and is off the emerging singer’s just-released self-titled EP. On today’s episode of VERIFIED, find out more about the song's inspiration and viral fame.
"The water challenge is Bacardi, a dance style from South Africa," she tells Genius. "I ended up working with my choreographer. He came up with the challenge. So we're rehearsing and doing the dance, but I was like, 'Nah, like, I wanna pour water down my back. I ended up doing it in Rwanda and ooh, everybody loved it! Now it's my thing, you know."
Music legend Aaliyah also helped inspire "Water." “Growing up, I really liked the song 'Rock The Boat' and I did not know what that song meant," she says. "I just loved that it was a song about something mature but if you didn’t know, you didn’t need to know. No matter the age or no matter where you from, you can vibe to it!"
Tyla's newly-dropped EP also includes songs like "Truth or Dare" "Butterlies" and "On and On."

Exactly! 🎉
lol. It’s a basic vocal. Damn this generation is basic

I really love how she phrased everything and kept it pg, as adults we know what the lyrics mean but a younger audience can still bob to it without really knowing, just as she referenced “rock the boat”. Nothing explicit and vulgar like a lot music today, one can easily tell their kid it’s a song about dancing with someone you like and we sweat when dance.
Exactly! I loved her explanation. Very PG, but adults know exactly what she’s talking about lol
So it’s good for young kids to bop to vulgar songs as long as they are ignorant to the fact that it’s vulgar?
@@DonAntonio-1 no it’s not, but it’s better than the alternative. It’s your duty as a parent to teach your kids, and even then some kids will either not listen or be influenced by friends. That is an entirely different topic for another day.
Chill out dude!@@DonAntonio-1
@@DonAntonio-1 oh please like you didnt dance to inappropriate songs ?? its not like it matters because its only dirty if you understand. like op said, you can just say its about something else and then its fine
can we talk abt how her vocals sound exactly like the studio version? nothing fake abt her at all💗🤩
My same thought💯🔥just amazing❤
Because SHE CAN SING!!! THIS GIRL IS BETTER THAN AMERICAN SO-CALL MATURE POP ARTISTS....PERIOD
Literally just thinking the same thing
Literally several octaves lower than the original……I’m concerned
@@justinhankerson2730 she's sung it in the original key live several times
As a South African, this makes me sooo happy! How she speaks, explains, her body language, this is us!🥰🤭 Thank you Tyla for authentically being yourself and South African, as you should. It's like I am watching my childhood bestie🥺💗Yoh!😭💝
I'm not South African, but I feel vicariously happy through your comment lol!
💗💗💗@@Kyoukichi
She needs to make an acoustic version because these vocals were fire 🔥
Fr her voice is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Her vocals are concerning. She dropped two octaves during this interview, on a melody that any soprano can hit in their sleep…..I’m concerned….
@justinhankerson2730 you are commenting the same thing on every comment. Go be concerned somewhere else. She sounded great. Completely live and better than many other established artists.
@@justinhankerson2730 How many times you wanna make this same comment? Do you feel accomplished talking about octaves? ☠️

Absolutely right sounds good
I pray she has longevity in this industry..I love her!!!
I think a girl as beautiful and talented as her needs to stay away from the industry., Hollywood is a scary place and loves destroying young girls like this., like no one I loved growing up seems sane rn and they were the Disney/nick stars that apparently became the “well adjusted grownups.” Nah. This girl actually has pure beauty and talent,. I hope she can have a long lasting career on her own terms away from Hollywood

I pray that Jesus Christ protects her soul , my wife Tyla can't sold her soul
For those who don't know. "Dololo" is a South African spang word for "Nothing, small or unavailable"
Haha, reading this in Australia. And thinking South Africa has a lot of "hot slang words". We need to market it more.
She's a perfect example of "tell me you're a South African without actually telling me you're a South African"....and the fact that she kept her accent all the way😂❤✨️
Love her accent, personality and dedication to the craft. Don't let anybody change who you are
That's south african Capetonian accent
@@jupiter242bra just say coloured
No autotune needed. Pure talent. Her diction. Everything! No mumbling at all !
I love how passionate she is about her work, along with her dedication and humbleness. Definitely deserves the Grammy nomination ✨
Edit: For all those commenting she’s not humble or she doesn’t deserve the Grammy nomination, please show a bit more kindness. She’s just another person doing what she loves most in this world. I said she deserves it because she cares about her craft. She also credited the dance as it’s apart of her culture, along with the help of her choreographer. You’re all entitled to your opinions but at least think before you decide to comment something rude. 🩵

I feel it is my patriotic duty to watch any and all videos featuring this baby gal.
I hope she's not putting too much pressure on herself to become the face of globally popular African music, or even just SAn music. No one person can fully encapsulate all that we are, so hopefully her success is the push the industry needed to give more space to African artists across the entire continent, and not just a token.
The girl can really sing , no need for autotune .
Omg her voice is so beautiful accapella
Help keep streaming this song to go to number one on the US billboard she deserves it
I doubt water will reach this with the christmas songs, maybe in the future though, she deserves it!

Smiles... just tell us it is a bedroom talk, she is just tryna make it sound motivational and inspirational too.
Omg I love her! And I love how she said Aaliyah's "Rock the boat" was one of her fave and inspired her because I immedietly felt Aaliyah vibes in her video clip visually and she has such a soft voice too! Obviously she has her own style and she is so talented!
So happy to see her doing big things
Here after a certain fandom is defending their talentless fav by saying that Genius is just for explaining the lyrics and not for singing 💋

Why do accents just disappear when someone sings at least sometimes 😭
Music is a universal language it’s still there you just don’t hear the accent because you’re focused on the instrument (sound of her voice)🔥🔥🔥🔥
Accents change when you sing cause the way you stress vowels, intonation etc go along with the beat and rhythm of the music. You're now speaking (singing) with the rhythm of the beat and not the rhythm of the accent you grow up with.
@@HealedChakras777 that makes sense
Thank yall so much I've always wondered why people with accents disappeared when they sang 💯💯
If you listen to her pronounce "Set of" as Serof in the original you'll hear there's still some accent left. Thought she was South African the first time I heard it.

the way her accent disappears when she sings is so crazy yet impressive at the same time
It’s because she grown up listening to R&B from the States.
That's not the reason, 😅😅 South Africa was colonized by the British Colony so🥱your justification is invalid. Many people in South Africa if they had to speak in english you wouldnt guess that they are from Africa
