Monarch 10EE 7000.00 Mistake : Getting the Donor Spindle ready to install.

- Time to take the old spindle apart and get the parts transferred over to the replacement spindle. Don even comes out of hiding to help get it done. This is a part of the 7000..00 Monarch 10EE restoration series.. This poor lathe was bought at auction, untested, for around 7000.00 and turned out to have a worn bed, crashed spindle and the wrong electronics installed... What A Mess I'm tiring to rebuild on a budget.
I'm 71 years old and I am not trying to be a smart ass, but you remind me so much of my grandfather. He use to build machines. I remember him building a horizontal boring machine I think it was for a cabinet making company. In 2010 I was building a three story building on top of a 5 level parking garage. The electrical superintendent said he used to know a man from where I live with the same last name. He said Paul was his first name. Did you ever meet him. I said yes, he was my grandfather. He told me he met him at the cabinet company. He said I think he was the smartest man he ever met. He said he taught me about electricity and got me started in what I do today. I enjoy your shop works.
All that time dinking around I was like hit that thing!!
It's somthing I can't afford to replace... the bearings are at least 2800 and who knows what the spindle costs.. costs....
Tell him Brian, hit it with your purse! Lol
Man I second that emotion !!! Thank God I don't live in California,,,, Texas proud !!
I don't know why I keep watching... but then I see another one and have to watch it.
Just keep looking into my eyes.,,, You are getting sleepy.......
I learned one thing from this ==Never under any circumstances Buy a 10-EE lathe , and Thanks for the education !!
Wow, this channel has it all - new characters, guest appearances, and soon trolls in the comments complaining about you got lint from those red shop rags into the spindle bearings and they're now ruined forever!
Aw the tolls never stop :)
Thanks mutt and Jeff
OK Don, when I nod my head you hit it!
HEY! Who's side are you on anyway>???
You and Don have a unique friendship, I love to see the banter without any affect other than some coming back the other way 😊
My wife walked into my shop well I was shooting a video. I didn’t show it, it was early in the morning and she was serving me breakfast in her birthday suit. True story 😀
Good to see the 2 amigos back in action.
Aussie who loves San Francisco Don.
I have my fingers crossed for ZERO runout.
I think it will be ok :)
@@10swatkins are you in San Francisco? Be amazing to see some of the old industry still in the city.
Good to see your friend taking care of you - good to see you taking care of that lathe 😉
Great video. You and Don make a great team. Enjoyed every minute of video.
Thanks Roy...
Hey don is a pretty good sidekick in this show
Enjoying the education, you are providing. Thank you.
Your welcome!
Looks like the 10EE is coming back to life once again thanks to your knowledge and skills, I sure hope we get to see Don's shaper progress videos.
IF I can convince him to wear clothes the next time I will air them :)
Hi Steve & Don!
That 10EE is going to be a sweet machine! Don is a thrifty soul when it comes to hair cuts! Try to keep him away from any rotating machines!
I am convinced that you both are a bit "cross" threaded!... Which one is left hand??..You guys REALLY complement one another, and I really enjoy the banter and videos! Pay no attention to the people out side with the butterfly nets! There just hunting butterfly's! .. Yeah right!
Best WISHES, GUYS!
Gary
I am left handed👍🏻😂
HEY I resemble that remark!
I have been watching your lathe job for some time now. It has been a nightmare and I'm sorry about this. I hope it works out for you very soon.
Oh it will get better... Thanks for watching...
Not bad. Good approach to getting the nut off and back on. There has to be a way to test the preload while in the machine and then adjust as necessary. Keep it up!
The two spacers between the bearings are suppose to put the correct preload on the bearings... Thanks for watching...
We were worried about the scab. Wish you luck.
Thanks John... Just a lot of skin to regrow....
Thanks for sharing 👍 It's not click bate when it's true.
That's what I thought :)
Love i when Don comes over and aggravates the crap out of Steve. We used to do that to dad years ago in the shop. He would grab a hammer and slam it down next to our hands and say "stop that crap!!!" Lol.
I hope beating on that bearing nut doesn't affect the 25 millionths accuracy of that donar spindle.... We usually make a sleeve that would slide over the end of the spindle with fingers milled in the end that would engage the slots to give you even force distributed around the nut. With a big wrench, Bubba style, put leverage on the sleeve until it breaks loose. Of course, most of the time, we would do it just like you just did. Thanks for sharing Don and Steve, Ken
Who's side are you on????
@@10swatkins Hehe...🤠 I'm on yaws side.☺☺
What a comedy duo and you got the work done.
watched the intro . . . . . came back for a proper encore. gotThat. this project is a done deal for sure . . . . but i'm coming back because you're so freakn' straight up & doing things the way that got you so successful to properly meet this challenge. dude . . . . smart, entertaining & you wear the absolute coolest shirts for a guy messn' with a bunch of machines only us machinists could luv. sub'd & i will tell my 16" SB she remains elegant in her comparative simplicity. ciao!
Thanks Scott..... I kick myself in the butt for selling my Heavy 10! I had that one for 34 years, sold it 5 years ago and miss it every week... :(
I'll tell you what is see in this video, especially around 9:11, are hands that have the marks of lifelong learning and problem-solving.
Great video Steve! Great to see Don, too. Always nice to have that 3rd hand around. Also great to see this nice machine a step closer to coming back to its original form! Happy to see that you are getting closer to 100% also. Thanks for your time and sharing! 👍✌️
Yeah just a bunch of old things needing repair hanging around here :)
Right with you, Steve! 😎
Good work! I reckon the new format works well! People just wandering in and out as they please!
I've got to get a guard dog!
It was a real pleasure to watch you both
Thanks Peter
I have a monarch 10ee too i just bought, my spindle has suitable runouts, but i have a less than satisfactory “upgraded” ac motor conversion with a vfd from the period. Only spins me to around 600 rpm. Excited to follow the upgrades you end up making to the motor/drive/control unit
You guys are fun to watch!
Wait till Sundays video... Don is in rare form....... I don't know how much more I can take....
@@10swatkins Save me a front row seat!
Enjoying the videos Steve....Thanks for taking us along on the repair!!! 10EE what a fine machine.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello Steve, another great video.
Another great video Steve. It’s always good to see you and Don together. I think that you should change your channel title to “Steve it’s not a mole Watkins”
I like that
Damn that was on there. It was good to see Don out , I enjoy seeing you to work together Or not Did Don get his ankle bracelet off Ha Ha
Thanks for the video
He built a Black Box to jam it :)
Making progress!
Excellent video good to see the new talent along with the old talent lol.
Lol me thinks we both old! 😂
I'm not old.. I started again on February 10th :)
@@10swatkins I mean t the return of the mythical Don🤣🤣🤣
Hi, Steve! Watching you from Romania, i enjoy your videos. I am currently buying machines and building a small shop. Repair looks good, almost done. Wish you the best!
Well good luck to you also :)
i don't believe the spanner nut puts any preload on the bearings it simply holds the inner races in position on the spindle. the outer sleeve maintains a precise distance between the outer races not a preload. when the spindle is installed i believe the outer race of the bearing next to the spanner nut will bottom out inside the headstock. the bolt flange on the spindle can then be tightened up capturing the outer races and holding them in alignment. i have never had a 10 ee apart so i'm anxious to see this repair thru. good video.
That's what I was trying to explain :) The nut only holds things in place and keeps the bearings tight against the inner and outer sleeve that puts the correct distance and according to what I have read, preload on the bearings.
I get in trouble when I leave the door open too. Usually really bad after the 2nd or 3rd week. in winter especially except in maybe summer. And wasn't it a good coincidence that after the door was found open that Don showed up! Look for footieprints on the washer/drier. And Sammy tried a lobotomy on me while he had me but the smoke got so bad they had to quit and after breaking the diamond bit beyond repair he decided it'd be cheaper for me to go on home. My minus I.Q. was politickal material but I needed to go back to the hills WORSE than be any more of a laughingstock than I already was. Glad to see the electricianer out and about, even if you were going to have to whack him, gently of course. And it matters not whenever you're looking for something it'll NEVER be in the box you look in. Carry on and glad you got that sleeve out from under the shop rag/bearing cushion. That had me worried. Yall remain calm and GBWYall!
I have a guard dog on order!
@@10swatkins Pits or Dobies work well. They'll drag intruders to wherever you are to show off whatever/whoever it is before they lick them to death.
Just found your channel - wow such good content here, going to be entertained for quite a while!

Lookin good Steve. I think the tach gear is backwards...😉
Yep.. I was looking around and found the tear down footage...
nice work Steve , givd don a BREAK
Arm or leg?
I assumed you would realize both. Back in colonial times if you had a portrait done it would cost extra if you wanted an arm or a leg in the portrait so that’s where the term comes from cost an arm and a leg the extra cost associated with the portrait with the limb added
Was Don in a rock band in the 60’s, I noticed his hair/ ponytail?
Don has not had a store bought hair cut in over 2 years :)
Actually I was in a band for over 30 yrs!
An alternative to brass plugs is a lead ball, and easier to acquire. Shotgun cartridges provide a wide variety of sizes of lead balls.
I would think they would work well, Might be a little soft but there is no where for them to go :)
@@10swatkins They conform to the thread and so provide excellent grip. The method is common in European machines.
I can't wait to see this thing turning some chips
Long way from that I'm afraid... Still have to fix the cross slide and rails , motor electronics... :(
Hope your lobotomy is hammer adjustable. I use a soft jaw hammer on mine. Please more videos.
Don't know about that... That was not included in the Do it yourself lobotomy kit instructions........ It was a highly advertised Ronco kit "As Seen On TV"
Think they sold them under the brand name flowbee also.
Did you leave the door open on purpose?
Gosh Dang It.
Keep Driving On Brother
Problem is they got through TWO doors!
I was watching a Keith Rucker youtube video (VintageMachinery) as he was re-building a spindle for his monarch 10EE. If I recall correctly, he found that the labyrinth seal nut went on with the tapered end facing the bearing, which is opposite of how you mounted your nut. I don't know who is correct. Just an observation.
The consensus is that I have the nut backward... Frankly I don't see where it matters one way or the other as far as putting tension on the spindle.... Oil splash I could see :)
Got some progress done. Nice. Now as to Dons videos I assume theyre not up to your standards and you need to fix them is why we are having a delay
Well Don is naked in half of them and I just can't inflict that on the world.....
@@10swatkins figured it was something
Did he mean Running pliers for lead?
I took it to mean something to do with the lead used to make stained glass windows...
Thats a charging port not a mole. So you can run longer jump higher see farther and oh well see the future .. I see you catch hell like me too!
Got to find the right cable for it :)
Steve, please try to use some sort of protective gloves when you use that acetone. I used to use it years ago too, and then I found out how carcinogenic it is.
I mean, you're already trying to deal with a failed lobotomy...... You don't need cancer on top of it. 😉
What is the car horn blowing in the background every little bit?
I didn't hear a horn... Maybe a beep? that's UA-cam notification every time someone leaves a comment.. Have yet found how to turn that off :)
The Nut is scrap anyhiow so mount it in a lathe turn the nut down till it beaks
NAw. it came off :)
I’ve got pliers to cut lead came (yes, it’s came, not cane). Pliers to break glass, etc. but as far as I know, there’s no such thing as a caming plier. To do what?
Well with the correct spelling I found these... www.amazon.com/StudioPRO-603-Studio-Lead-Nippers/dp/B006WQKTYS I don't see where they are much different than regular dikes.. I guess you're suppose to maybe grind the sharp edges off and use then to grip the sides of the keys..
@@10swatkins yes, cutters and nippers, but no pliers. I wouldn’t think of doing that. A parallel jaw plier is much better. Or a vise grip type tool with smooth jaw tips instead of serrated. I use those most of the time if the keys are stubborn.and keys are cheap, if it does get damages, a set doesn’t cost much to have on hand.
Why did you install the nut upside down?
threads were messed up on the outer edge... Put it on backwards to clean the little bit of damage...
@@10swatkins but final assembly was upsidedown. Almost 100% sure Tapered side goes towards bearing
@@earleclemans4836 I will look at the drawings before I place it... Thanks....
Moving along, great to have Don on site to help out. Looking forward to see the progress on his shaper. Keep the "Pyramid"crew functioning. Had forgot about that trick with turning fitting to start the threads, good one. Thanks for the look!
Thanks, will do!
