That really is a beautiful running 5.5. No rattles or odd noises in the powerhead at all and it churns right along. Any time I can get 9mph or better out of a 5.5 I know I have a good one.👍
Thank you for doing these videos. Awesome! Exact boat I have 59 F7. I decided not to buy the Johnson with it cause thought it was to small… going back to get it next weekend. Looks like a very solid motor.
I could use some help with my 1956 5.5HP Johnson. Fully rebuilt. Runs really well now. However, it does not plane out my 12' aluminum boat. I wish it ran like the one is the video runs. Any ideas what I might need to tweak to get a little higher high end? Clocked it at 6MPH on a lake this morning.
Hi Ben, first time commenting. Love your work on outboards. I am currently following the 55 Johnson CD12 rebuild you did a number of years ago. I wanted to ask you if there is a way to contact you about a 1956 Johnson RDE 18E 30HP I just picked up. I would like to get it up and running, eventually restoring it to brand new condition. If it is possible to make contact with you, please let me know, as I have some questions to ask you. I am a member of the AOMCI, live in Va.
Dude I love your channel I just picked up a 57 model of that same motor... two questions 1. Does it run a 16/ 1 mix like your 56 and 2 is it possible to put a fuel pump on these and run a newer plastic tank
With todays oil being so much better than when these motors were made is it really necessary to go with a 16:1 ratio?I bet it would be fine with at most 24:1 or even 50:1.
Well today's oils are not that much better. I have piles of dead power heads from thees motors that people thought less oil was ok to use. It is never ever a good idea to use less oil then the oe mix. oil is cheep power heads are not and they run just fine and don't smoke much or foul plugs when using TCW3. Using 50/1 in this motor it will fail half way across the lake, I bought this motor for the power head to replace a power head that someone ran 50/1 in.
@@chrysleroutboarddude Nothing could be more true than what Ben has advised. Never reduce the amount of oil. Think about it....it's 60 years old and running strong - Is that possible if previous owners were running it on a leaner mix? No way! If anything, give the outboard a little extra oil. I run my 50:1 OMC's at 40-45:1. I consider it a treat for them; a way to take extra good care of them.
Wow that motor is quite! I'm confused now though, 16:1 ratio? I thought small outboards are supposed to be 50:1 like my Evinrude 9.5, and that's what I use in my Force 4 HP. Also, why does your outboard have 2 fuel lines going to it? Thanks for the info
These older motors run at 16:1 because they need more lubrication. Yours is probably newer and doesn't need as much oil. The two lines coming from the connector is because it has a pressurized tank hooked up to it. The motor makes pressure in the tank which gives the motor gas. They soon switched to fuel pumps though
That is a very hard question to answer. It depends on your location and the condition of the motor, and do you have the correct fuel tank. I sell them fully serviced and with a warranty for between 250/450 I buy them that need serviced for 50 or less.
@@chrysleroutboarddude I have one that runs great, totally rebuilt a few years ago and I have the gas tank that works also. I've been offered $200 but I'm asking $300. I guess I'm not too far off. Thank you.
Oh man! 16:1 and no ethanol combined with the nice hum that little motor makes! Beautiful.

Nice save Ben got a 56 10hp project going to work on since I'm on covid 19 shutdown so glad your posting yet keep it up ty buddy

A sweet quiet 56 Ben! Maybe a little "hanger rash" but it sounds really nice! Mark in Iowa.
Nice save, that powerhead sure is quiet...
That's a sweet running little motor.
Smart little outboard! Thanks for sharing
This 5.5 is as strong as some 7.5 motors. I never thought there was a big difference in power between the 5.5 and the 7.5.

Nice unit. I have a 57 7.5 hp
Pretty cool videos bud!!!
Thank you. I have been watching your videos for years.

No wonder people use Johnson for a trolling motor they're so quiet good job
Lol I turned my speakers louder to hear the engine run 😂
Have notice anything with better gas?

Hi Ben, can you suggest a parts source?? I have a 1955 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 probably need a few seals, and a couple of gaskets.
I want to see how to change the impeller in a 1958 5.5 horsepower Johnson
Very nice!
Hey I bought a boat motor from you a couple of years ago had a question for you about it. Is there a way I could reach out to you?
Hi Ben how do I contact you has I need help with my Chrysler 72 12.9hp
Thanks Steven

OMC switched to 50:1 in 1964, coincidentally the first year for the 9.5hp. 1963 and prior outboards by OMC use higher ratios of fuel to oil mixture.
what's a fair price for one of these motors in good conditions??

I'm very curious what does it weigh?

I have a 71 Johnson 6hp that only runs 5 mph😂 full throttle
