  • Testing the delightful Skysurfer X9 to 3 channel - Rudder Elevator Throttle. It works beautifully to make an even simpler and better beginners plane. It works so well I have now removed the aileron servos, taped up the ailerons and curved the wingtips up a little more. Flying weight is now 600g with 1300 3S

I always admire your boldness to just modify straightaway. I would mull things over for a month. You just start cutting and taping! Great vid.

I have so many planes that they have to be perfect or unique or interesting to survive, and I love experimenting

If You have ever noticed how a Cessna rudder hinge is angled,
whenever rudder is applied, it moves the tail-section down
effectively adding up elevator . . . when flying 3-channel, you add a little up ele (or mix some in).
It is amazing how one can fly with 3-channel. Full throttle burst and stick up to 10:00 o-clock for crazy
    tail rolls. I have a Supercub that will 3-D on 3-channel. Much more relaxing . . . aye-up .

I like these model types- so many built on the basic theme
can always chuck the motor for a more exciting flight envelope

Always a good test of a plane to see if it flies on 3 ch. Few do it as well. I'm liking this more every time

This is an important video, Andrew. I think far too many people nowadays are led to believe that every model MUST use at least 4 channels, and preferably 7. Maybe it's due to the ease with which modern radios can be set up, plus the fact that so many aircraft are pre-built, often with servos already installed. For anybody who started out a little earlier when scratch-building from plans was the norm, it was standard practice to design ALL models to be self-stabilising - even the almost-scale jobs.
I had a 56" span glow-engine powered P-51D Mustang that flew beautifully as RUDDER ONLY. Yes, really. The Dallas Doll herself: "P-51D Muskrat, caddy shack of the skies!" [With apologies to the 'Empire of the Sun' film.] Elevator and throttle were only added when I could afford the servos. Dihedral was a compromise of course, but the extra inch barely showed. Ailerons were an exotic luxury back then, and much fun was had by all. Many gliders will happily manage on rudder only as 'occasionally interrupted' free-flight models.

    Hi Andrew,
Nice test with rudder only and the added rudder area. Was going to suggest removing aileron servos and see that was already done. :-)

Great work Andrew, must try 3 channel on some of my gliders to see how it works. My Radian flies brilliantly, you would think it had ailerons the way it feels.

    • @AndrewNewton

    • @stewjade

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  5 років тому

@@stewjade Hmmm depends on what you want really. This is lighter and a better glider, the B 2 is tougher, faster and can be more aerobatic. You need both obviously

Andrew, the problem I have is I have 25 or so planes of all sizes already, and a very understanding wife, so if I bought one of these little cuties I would have 26. First world problem eh ..... ?

I tried to convince a friend to get it... He went for the 2m Ranger instead. Not a bad option either but I had a feeling this would be a gentle soarer.
