Very true. A pilot episode following Blocker's death Trileptal tested Curley Joe Besser in the Hoss role. Besser had replaced ,Curly of the ,Three Stuges following his death. However the chemistry, and role was not a good fit for Besser.
Dan had a heart of gold...a gentle, kind man. I don't think he had the heart to hit people playing football, even though I know he would have been great. His character Hoss Cartwright is the same person as Dan Blocker. He was genuine; the real deal. Dan was the ideal cowboy.

Dan Blocker, Eric Cartwright, big hoss was an absolute masterpiece role. His expressions is kindness. His courage was unmatched hard as a rock as sweet as a strawberry sundae, Dan Blocker was one hell of an actor. God bless him and his family.

Dan Blocker was a gentle giant in more ways than one!
As Michael Landon put it, when Dan Blocker died they all knew it was the end of Bonanza. When cancellation came after the 14th season none of the cast and crew were surprised. It just wasn't the same anymore.

Great chance if Dan hadn't died then, Bonanza could've stayed on longer than Gun Smoke, and been the longest-running Western series.
The cast still figured that NBC would still let them finish out the season though.
I remember rushing home from church every Sunday night to watch Bonanza. My family would gather around the TV and eat popcorn. ❤

The plain truth is it was bad enough losing Pernell Roberts after 200 episodes. But there's only one person, that the world came to love, who could be Hoss Cartwright. That was Dan Blocker. No disrespect to Michael Landon cuz he was great as well. But everyone came to love, look forward to and respect Dan Blocker as Hoss Cartwright. I was too young at the time to appreciate. So yrs later I got to watch the reruns of Bonanza and Hoss , alongside Joe, Ben and Adam were so great to watch. No one could say 'Dad burn it, like Dan Blocker or fill his shoes.

Couldn't believe later he was the investigator on another dhow. He sure gained wait and good looking appearance he had on Bonanza.
Pernell Roberts left because he felt like the show was beneath him.

Roberts did not like thesimple scripts or the fact of maybe being typecast into his role. Obviously he went on to act in other venues of stronger intellects

Very kind, contemplative, and "bookish" was Blocker, so said my dad, uncle, and aunt who knew him from elementary school and the Blocker store in O'donnell. In addition, my brother heard him publicly speak, in a classroom, at Sul Ross Univ. He said Dan's mind was deep seated and his voice projected well as a speaker which made him interesting. One notable family story, my dad said Dan was about 12 yrs old when working at his parents grocery store. He remembers Hoss as quite; hence, pop never paid attention to the kid. What caught his eye was elementary age Blocker bringing out of the front door of the tiny establishment a 100 lb burlap sack of potatoes slung over his shoulder to be deposited in my Grandads wagon. My dad did not believe Dan would make it to the wagon without dropping the load. To his surprise, he said the 12 yr old flipped the hundred pound load over the wagon sideboards into the back of the vehicle with little effort. My aunt had a story. She said he was teased a little for his propensity to carry books on his person Vs a baseball or such. My uncle said this was true, so he helped the young Blocker learn some basic fighting skills administered in back of the store with Mr Blockers permission. The next weekend after the lesson. My uncle said Dan met him with a smile and glee exclaiming: 'I licked-em, I licked-em!" I guess this was God's way of foreshadowing what was to come for Hoss.

Dan Blocker was one of a kind actor. I am a fan of his. I admired his personality, kindness, funny character he placed in the show. Dan , is not like no other actor, he was one that made Bonanza . Dan Blocker, will always be remembered and missed. I wish it would have been a different time in medical procedures more modern like today 2024 where he could have maybe still alive. He will always be Hoss Cartwright in my mind. I know one of his sons looks so much like his dad which gives me happiness . May his family be blessed in all the years to come. Really not all that better Even now, Knew a lady that was 3rd Generation owner of a BBQ restaurant in Maywood il. She went in for routine leg surgery, and died on the operating room table, from what I've heard it was due to using the wrong anesthesia on a diabetic patient. By all accounts she should have been back to work the next day making superb BBQ ribs and tips, but life throws curve balls.
@@scottp5803 Exactly why we need to understand any surgery is a risk. Just as is a drive to the grocery store has risks. Tragedy happens infrequently but it does happen. A horrific example of that is shortly after the I-205 Bridge between Oregon and Washington opened, a speeding maniac's car hit another car sending it over the raid of the bridge into the Columbia River! Both women and all children died in that - parts of two families going home from a routine outing with no way to anticipate or prevent such a horrific thing happening - one moment laughing and talking and the next their vehicle plunging off the bridge into the river - no way to prevent or escape. Surgery patients are much like the two women and their children in the car that day - experiencing a routine event with no anticipation other than arriving safely at home when it's over.
Absolutely an American Western Classic. A monumental triumph in American cinema. Every time I watch Bonanza, it’s like spending time with my childhood friends. I have nothing but fond memories growing up watching Bonanza. May the entire cast Rest In Peace in the presence of almighty GOD in JESUS name ✝️🙏🏻

I'm 45 year old and from the South Pacific Islands, I used to watch Bonanza on Saturdays in Melbourne Australia during the 80s. I didn't mind it because my family loved watching it. My 70 year old mother how ever is a huge fan. She's recently taken control of the lounge room and it's been nothing but Bonanza reruns and bush cooking shows for the last 5 months. When ever I walk into the lounge room she's pretty much always laughing and trying to explain to me what Hoss just did. Thank you Hoss/ Dan Blocker and Bonanza for your funny down to earth entertainment that puts a smile on my mothers face. Oh and thanks to the person who made this video.👍😊
I always imagined Dan Blocker in the "Lenny" character of the book, "Of Mice and Men" he would have nailed it.
Will never forget good ol Hoss. When we lost him, it was my very 1st day of basic training. Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. 5-13-72.
That brought back a lot of memories for me.. back in the 1980s, while in incline village I visited the Ponderosa ranch on my honeymoon.. I enjoyed walking through the ranch and seeing the Cartwright home.. Through the years as we had children, we never missed a year.. The last time that we went there, they had closed the park due to lack of insurance.. I felt like the Griswold family😂 .. I was there with my 4 kids and wife. We haven't missed a year in over 10 years... The owner was nice enough to let us in after I showed him our photo album. My kids sitting on plastic horses etc. We had our own private tour.. He even fired up his BBQ grill and made us all HOSS burgers...

Dan Lived only 1 mile away in Hacienda Heights where I grew up. We often saw him at local grocery stores. He was a very down to earth nice person. He was exceptionally nice. He in NO way was altered by Hollywood.
My mother loved this show she watched all the time. Great memories.
Dan Blocker was not only a likable character, but also ran two different steakhouses, Bonanza and Ponderosa. I had eaten at both as a child, while watching the TV series. A truly remarkable man!
Two great restaurants; but most of them shut down last year, I don't know if any are still open or not. That Wuhan Lab Fauci “Gain Of Function” virus shut down a lot of good old restaurants. Now we have dozens of Mexican and Chinese restaurants.
I adored him, he was the only Bonanza cast member I cared about
I was 9yrs.Old when Dan died, I remember crying over losing him, he was my favourite on Bonanza, my older sisters liked Little Joe, I couldn't understand till I turned 13, but Dan was the heart of the show. RIP Hoss Dan Cartwright ❤❤❤

I still watch Bonanza today! My favorite western of the era. And who doesn't love the character Eric "Hoss" Cartwright brilliantly portrayed by the great Dan Blocker. This video was jam packed full of relevant and useful information. Not that I'm really proud of it, but I binge watched All seasons of the Rifleman in about a months time (maybe a little less), and then all the seasons of Bonanza in about a 3 month period.... the last 3-4 seasons went fairly fast because the quality and poor story lines and comedy being interjected and fast forward spared me the agony.... Dad always watched it on Sunday evenings... I also watched every episode of "Gunsmoke", as THAT was my Grandpa's favorite show.. aside the Honeymooners (which I've seen every episode).... All very good shows.

I had the honor of meeting the entire bonanza people. I raced in the all American soap box derby. I placed third that year. The entire bonanza group was so great to me and all who got to know them. Mark kordon. Akron ohio.
I loved Hoss because despite being huge, his heart was even more huge!
What a marvelous teacher he must have been! He made a positive imprint on students, I have no doubt. That show was a moral compass for this country along with Gunsmoke. Once the Ten Commandments and Bible study were banned from schools those two shows and a few others were the way families connected and understood right from wrong. Hoss had tenderness, kindness and belief in hard work and play. He was the character we all wanted to know and spend time with. That is why Hoss and the real man, Dan Blocker are still missed today.

Bonanza started when I was 5 years old. I vividly remember us sitting down as a family and watching it every week and it was a big part of my childhood. Little Joe was my first crush, but Hoss was my hero. As important as Bonanza was to me, I couldn't watch it without Hoss. The heart and soul of the show had left for me. It was shocking and so so sad.
😂😂 Michael Landon and Dan's interactions were always so funny. Michael being so much smaller than Dan, but he was still tough as nails.
Its magical when the directors vision and the actors talent can walk in step with each other and get recognized by the viewers. Im older now and still enjoying what once entertained us..he's still my favorite television character.
I really appreciate this highlight of Dan Blocker. As a little girl, Hoss was my favorite character. I was attracted to his gentle child like nature.
When he died I was greatly saddened... I did not have a father growing up and he was my ideal father fantasy... strong, protective, and loving.
My brother and I were blessed as well to watch this giant man with a giant heart teach us what it was like to have a father (ours passed when we were 8 and 9 years old.) What a blessing for me and my brother to have a mentor as an example of kindness in every way, he was a wonderful pretend dad. They are both in heaven now and I hope they have found each other.

I got to watch Bonanza reruns after school, before my mom came home from work. As I type this, I'm looking at my tin drinking cup from the "Ponderosa Ranch" theme park. It has a picture of Lorne, and the ranch house, and it holds small things I want handy. As I'm from Northern California and we frequently vacationed at Lake Tahoe, I was able to visit there a few times. Yes indeed, Dan Blocker was integral to the show. I did not know how highly educated he was, or that he was 6'4", and weighed 14lbs when he was born. Holy mackerel!!!

No one could Replace Dan Blocker, He was a master at his craft. I miss him dearly, and wish I could have met him. He passed when I was 8, and never was to be. However I met one of his Directors, who knew him well, and said he was a pure delight to work with.His name was Richard Collin’s. Who worked with the cast, but said Dan was the glue that held the show together. He told me many funny stories of Dans jokes and shananagans, on the set at his home in Brentwood. He assured me if I met Dan, he would definitely have been my friend, he said that’s just who Big Dan was. Well maybe in heaven , our paths will meet, but he was one of my favorite actors on the set. My favorite episodes were ( Arnie, and A stranger passed this way. ) But I know if I ever did meet Big Dan, he would definitely be not a stranger to me. 😅i was a kid born in '62 i remember loving that show & how much i mourned Hoss' Death. I wasnt as dedicated to Michael Landon until 'Little House on the Prairie & When he was an Angel on 'Highway to Heaven' !! Bonanza was like part of our family of 10 !!❤❤❤❤

I remember as a kid we lived in Nevada and got to go to the Bonanza set and we got to meet Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker it was in the late 60's I still remember it.
So true how younger people like my brothers and I could relate to Hoss Cartwright during the early 60's when we watched him on TV and caused us to laugh a lot ! was born in ‘71 and he died in ‘72… never knew all those bonanza shows that l had watched when l was a kid, that dan blocker had already passed. never thought about death back then, never knew there was such a thing until you got older. he was always my favorite character on the show, loved the guy.

Hoss was always my favorite, one because I was so happy and thrilled to learn that his name was Eric which is my first name. Although as a man I am much smaller in stature he is me and I am him. I remember being so devastated when I learned that he had passed and actually i still am. Thank you for doing such a wonderful and fitting tribute to such a remarkable man. Dan Blocker was a great guy! I was very fortunate to meet him in 1964, in Eureka Califirnia at the Redwood Acres Fair. I was 12 years old at the time. He was walking with Barry Goldwater that evening. Blocker was just as awesome in person as he was on TV!! He certainly did a LOT in his 43 years!

The loss of Hoss had a huge impact on the show. Even though I was young I was affected deeply and couldn’t continue to watch Bonanza. I loved all of the characters and the show itself, but the loss devastated me too much. It’s amazing how one person can have such a great effect on you. Bonanza was a dynamic show and I still love it. Thank you for sharing this with us. You did an excellent job. It is truly appreciated.

Having lived in Carlsbad, NM, I quickly learned that Mr. Blocker taught school here all those years ago & met people who knew him. He was treasued & they were very sad to see him leave. RIP Dan Blocker.....
I was fortunate enough to have met Dan when I was a kid. He was really friendly and signed my picture Hoss. My favorite episode was "Hoss and the Leprechauns" which still makes me laugh when I think about it.
He was a great actor along with the rest of bonanza. That was a fantastic Western series
I truly grew up watching Bonanza. I was in 1st grade in 1959. I remember as an 8 or 9 year old fantasizing about being "Little Joe's" girlfriend. My bike was my horse. In 1973 when the show ended I was married and a young 1st time mother. So yes I did literally grow up with the Cartwrights. I actually met Michael Landon and Dan Blocker in Albany GA (my hometown) in 1962 or 63 when they came to Albany for the Georgia Sheriff's Boy's Ranch Telethon. I have their autographs. My memory of Bonanza is nothing but wonderful. They don't make good wholesome family TV like that anymore.

I grew up watching Bonanza every weekend mom made popcorn and daddy always had an apple with it. I Loved Hoss,at a very small age I cued in to his humor but especially his empathetic heart that just made him so lovable. There was no-one like him, a rare diamond. I was 12 when he died and Ill never forget the shock or him.

At a Western theme park in Western NC, called Ghost Town in the Sky, there is an autographed photo and news clipping about his visit there many years ago. That theme park is now shuttered. It was thriving in the 1960s and 70s. There was a gunfight enacted as a play for attendees. All that's long gone, half a century ago - back before the decline of the USA we've seen in recent years. Though you can still go to Dollywood in Gatlinburg TN, which is a lot of fun.

The episode with Stella Stevens, who is such a raving Beauty in the episode, you can't help but fall in love with her I didn't know that it was after the death of Hoss. It was a great show, and I'm glad I was able to see it. All of the episodes were great. 😢😢❤

They said David Canary was brought in to "replace" Hoss, but that's not true. David Canary as Sgt John "Candy" Canniday, was brought in after Adam left the series. Candy was well established in many episodes with Hoss, Ben and Joe.
Luv'd Bonanza as a kid , always remember the Theme tune drawing you to the TV.., For him to do what he did an do time in Korea , Mans a Legend.

I honestly didn't realize how much my brother was like Dan, my brother was 6'3" 250 lbs. of solid muscle, he played on the varsity team when he was a sophomore in high school, his number all 3 years was 58, he was in the drama club, he was in Concert Men's Glee, I was in Concert Girl's Glee, we were both on the speech and debate team, my brother was a year younger than me, we lived in Fontana, California back then. I'm the oldest and the shortest, I'm 65 and I'm 5'0" with my tennis shoes on lol.

I was feeling nostalgic and figured I’d watch some reruns on UA-cam, Hoss was always my favorite, since I was the oldest and biggest one in my family. But, I just happened to read comments (normally I don’t and would never leave anything in the way my own comments. However, I felt I needed too after seeing your post.
