She's not saying he should have seen her red flags, she's saying she wishes she would have realized just how inappropriate it was for a 32 year old man to pursue a 19 year old teenager!!
I’ve seen so many reactions of this song, men not always understand the meaning of the lyrics. It’s kinda sad that only women get it, you know what I mean?
Because innocence isn't emphasized for boys. I think for a guy to feel this lyric, he would have had to gone through a similar experience of abuse or defining moment where they were forced to grow up quickly. With girls, most of us idealize the time in our life when we weren't pressured by society to appear innocent, because we already were.
@@Zippy_815I’ve seen a lot of male-reactors get this song. Some got really emotional.. but this isn’t only about getting the lyrics.. these two completely missed the point.
This song taylor wrote about her relationship with John Mayer, when they dated she was 19 and he was 31. She had already made another song about him "Dear John" from the album Speak Now
She’s reflecting back at age 32, the age the much much older and more experienced John Mayer was when she was 19. At age 19 she didn’t realize it was borderline inappropriate. But as an adult, she can look back and reflect with fresh eyes, mature eyes, and realize what was happening. Whatever happened, and I think it’s clear in the song, made her question her faith. If clarity is in death, why won’t this die? John Mayer has a famous song called Clarity. But she’s saying she sees it so clearly now, so why hasn’t this died. Well. It’s because it was inappropriate and she sees that now.
not only inappropriate, he groomed her and that’s what hurts for her, how he scarred her so bad, at the point that she questioned everything around her once she realized what was really happening.
@@pamela483 Plus, even though he was older and should have realized what he did was wrong, he did the opposite. He’s so narcissistic and showed how immature he is by continuing to complain about her with any chance he gets in interviews. You would think he would realize he was wrong and finally grow up, but nope. He goes and makes a song attacking her and still can’t admit it.
@@pamela483 He didn't groom her. She didn't meet him until she was an adult. And grooming usually takes place over the span of many years. That's not what happened here.
I´m also measuring reactions to this song by the people´s reaction to the central line of this song: "Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first". This lyric is devastating and her delivery is on point. It captures the whole of the song - her wish to go back to the carefreeness, lightness before being in an abusive relationship - because that´s baggage that is not easy to get rid off and impacts any future relationships. Also "it was mine first" - such a childish thing to say, further driving home the point of wanting to go back to her childlike self she lost during that relationship (John Mayer even once described as looking like a child when writing and doodling on set).
It's such a shock to me that you missed every child reference. Maybe because you're young. But "give me back my girlhood" didn't even register. Shocking.
It's so telling to me how different the reactions to this song/line are between men and women. They really don't get it, but all of the women listening to this song have the same reaction. Because we just *know*. I think it says a lot about how far we still have to go.
This is such an incredible song. Taylor has a way of making feel exactly what she was going through and understand the moment in your life when you had this exact feeling. CHILLS ❤
If you tasted poison is aimed at the subject (John Mayer) of the song and the narrator herself. She tells him he should´ve known better than to get into a relationship with a teenager who hero-worshipped him and that he has to take responsibility for the backlash he received and not just try to erase the relationship.
her writing is the best!! she writes all of her songs, directs her videos, in short she's really involved in the process which makes it more relatable and authentic
Taylor is an architect, in the song "I Think He Knows" one of the verses is "I am an architect, I'm drawing up the plans" this is from her Lover album. It is one of my favorites. I thought it was funny that you said she was an architect.
Another good reaction. Taylor has a lot of live performances here on YT. I'd love to see your reactions to live versions of Don't Blame Me, I Did Something Bad, or Out of the Woods. Just a thought.
Breaking this down: this song is about a toxic/abusive relationship Taylor was in with John Mayer when she was 19 and he was 32. This song was released when Taylor was 32 the same age as John was when they dated, and this song is track 19 on the album

How can men be so calm during she sings "give me back my girlhood it was mine first"
Because they truly don't get it. They've never had to experience the things women do on the daily, so I don't think it even occurs to them.

Love it when people who don't know her songs react to it and get so surprised. Take a look at "I did something bad" live hehe
