  • Nayib Bukele re-elected as El Salvador’s president for 2nd term 01.05.2024
El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is set to begin his second term after a landslide victory in February, securing 85 percent of the vote. The 42-year-old will govern for another five years with near-total control of parliament and other state institutions.
Bukele, who describes himself as a “cool dictator,” will be sworn in at the National Palace in San Salvador. The ceremony will be attended by dignitaries including Spanish King Felipe VI and Argentinian President Javier Milei, both admirers of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Bukele's popularity stems from his harsh crackdown on criminal gangs, which has been credited with reducing violence. Despite criticism from rights groups, he remains the most popular leader in Latin America. His New Ideas party won 54 of 60 legislative seats.
However, economic concerns are growing. Food inflation has outpaced salary increases, and public debt has soared to over $30 billion, 84 percent of the country’s GDP. Experts warn that Bukele’s honeymoon with voters may end as these issues intensify.
Bukele has more power now after the legislative assembly approved reforms easing constitutional changes. He sought re-election after a Supreme Court ruling allowed him to bypass a ban on successive terms.
