- The Yak-3 is arguably one of the best Russian fighter aircraft that saw service during World War Two.
This video captures Graeme Frew's display routine in his Yak-3 fighter at the New Zealand Warbirds Association airshow at Ardmore Aerodrome (Auckland, New Zealand) in June 2014. The aircraft is one of two Yak-3's currently operating in New Zealand.

+trap3400 тут как раз не понятно родной 105й или нет. Все Климовские двигатели вращались по часовой стрелке если смотреть из кабины, а тут вроде против часовой. Не видно на холостых куда вращается винт. А видео кадры могут обмануть как на 4:07

I believe this aircraft has an Allison V1710. The originals had an M? engine I believe that was derived from Spanish/French V12 design.
if i remember correctly the original yak3 had Klimov VK105PF

I suspect that Klimov engine (it sounds great) is a bolt and con-rod copy of an early Merlin especially when one looks at the front profile. Brilliant video.
John Brooks No, this particular aircraft was built in 1993 (believe it or not), and has an Allison V-1710 installed. Don't know how close a Klimov is to a Merlin in design though :-)
***** Yes. Very bad surprise for Hitler. Since long France and Russia cooperate on aircraft engines. But when Stalin bought licences to build French powerplants in Russia, the soviet doesn't have lots of money. Stalin claim for reliability. Swiss also make grat work on Hispano 12Y51 engine for reliability. A Klimov Yak engine is the same engine than in Dewoitine 520. The proof of the pudding is that the Finns have mounted engines Klimov recovered in Russia in a factory captured by the Germans on their Morane 406. With Stalin, things had to work. Other you directly go to jail .

All of the v12 aircraft engines wouldbe considered "powerfull sounding"Because they ARE.....
Fab aircraft and as you say, a very" Merlinish" sound. This was one of the few USSR fighters to give the 109's and 190's a hard time and you can see why.

Below 15,000 feet, the Yak would outfly the P51. Many modern pilots say that it would also outfly the Spitfire.

Looks almost identical to a Mustang.
The wings of a mustang are much more square. If you look at the silhouettes side by side they're very distinct.
Best Russian fighter, but that's all. Poor Gunsight, poor pilot protection, sub par armament. Didn't make the influential fighter list. Looks like it's fun too fly.
You realize the one in vid is a replica? Original was right up there with Mustang and Kingcobra.
Yes, There is more than one of these around, so I am very familiar with the type. Would I rate the original with the 51? No. The Kingcobra only in speed, not in armament or pilot protection.

From what I've read Fighter squadrons were not mixed. Fighter groups, yes. But usually with comparable A/C. I have not read where there was a mix. If a squadron was going to change A/C, even the Russians would remove the squadron from the front line for rest and re-fitting. Usually Lend lease was grouped together. Spits with Hurricanes {Merlins} P-40's with the P-39's and 63's{Allison's}. That's just from what I've read. The Russian did rave about the P-39, and could not get enough of the P-63's. The cannon the 'Cobras had were larger in caliber than what the Luftwaffe fighters were armed with. Plus they claimed the '63 was more maneuverable than the 109's. The P-400 was the hound dog of that family.
+bob dyer In his auto biography Chuck Yeager says his favorite plane to fly was p39. I imagine because it was the first high performance plane he trained on, and the training was very unrestricted and fun. Dangerous too, of course.
