- The 2019 Subaru Ascent is the biggest Subaru ever built, and some might even say the best. Unlike Subaru's first attempt at a three-row vehicle, this one gets just about everything right. It's considerably less expensive than the mainstream competition, is roomier than a Toyota Highlander, has more cargo room than a Honda Pilot, and handles more like a Mazda CX-9 than you'd have thought. Wow, I love Subaru as well Matt. There is just one single thing I dislike about them. How the metal on them tend to be more flexible than normal. This makes these Subaru's more prone to hail damage, more prone to breaking or cracking the bumper. That is my experience. Otherwise Subaru makes the Best Economy and some of the Best Value friendly vehicles in this country. I own a 2013 Impreza.

Hello Alex! I've owned the 2019 Subaru Ascent for two months. And, I read all about it before a test drive and purchase. This vehicle exceeds nearly all of my expectations. It is wonderful to drive, a powerful a/c system, important in Florida, a comforting eyesight technology. I am a single male, no family and wanted a vehicle to drive across the country and offer me comfort and space at 290 lbs and 6 foot tall. The Ascent is AMAZINGLY QUIET ON THE ROAD. I only have three issues about the vehicle because it is truly well built, excellent fit and finish, drives wonderfully, so comfortable and I appreciate the Subaru app telling me all about the vehicle, remote start and so much more. In Florida, I would appreciate a place for a small umbrella as the driver. Everything is a cup holder! I would also like a place in the door to store a pen(s) in a vertical position. Besides the "glove box", which is filled with owners manual, registration and other, we need another small space for other items. The "bin" below the a/c controls is not deep or tilted enough. When you speed off, everything comes flying out over the gear selector and then on the floor! The driver and passenger have two cup holders in the middle. Redesign the driver's door to offer, as example, an area to drop pens, small note pad/small tablet, mini umbrella. Thanks and I love my first Subaru!

Why they would not include a native CVT mode is beyond me. Give it sub-modes like sport (faster increase in output ratio response to throttle velocity) or eco (try to minimize RPM and therefore pumping losses but not lug the engine) and a mode in the middle. Copying an auto is just total facepalm aimed at people who can't adapt to anything different to what they knew as teens.
I'm watching a video for a vehicle I will probably never buy... I just really like your take a new vehicles and seeing what's out there.

Me too. I love seeing these vehicles in traffic and probably knowing more about them than their owners thanks to Alex.
We bought our 2019 in 2020, it was the last one they had so we got a great deal. Since then we have used this bad boy to haul a commercial grade treadmill, we have placed up to six 10 feet long 1 x 6's. Yes, those wood boards fit in there to name a few things you can haul in it. I was considering trading it in and test drove the Telluride, which was too firm, the Hyundai Palisade, had the looks but absolutely no power and lastly the Toyota Highlander, it had all the bells and whistles plus it's a Toyota however the ride was not as smooth as the Ascent independent suspension. So we decided to just keep our Ascent and keep using it FOR EVERYTHING! Reliability, safety, resale value great smooth ride, and great price oh, and by the way, you can take it pretty much anywhere..... unbeatable!!

As usual, a very thorough review, covering just about everything. As for the vehicle itself, it's really jumping next to the top of my list for a family vehicle. Good handling, as well as a good ride are important. Plus, of course, the space.

Just got a '19 Ascent Limited and I can tell you that this SUV is impressive. The roominess inside is quite generous. We got 7 passenger one, no Navi/Pano roof option, to keep the cost down, besides, that Pano roof is too heavy and wouldn't be used much anyways. Navigation is pointless with Apple Car/Android Auto standard. The kids and adults love the interior and the comfort creatures. We traded up from the Outback, completely different vehicle. It's very comfortable and handles greatly. We test drove the Highlander, but it didn't compare in interior space at all. A quick trip from Chesapeake, VA to Charlottesville, VA revealed great travel comfort. My wife loves it. Thank you Alex for a great review(s).

Why? I'd suggested taking the music from them and putting it on your phone for all of the reasons I'll get into in a sec, but I couldn't even do that - the last time I had a computer with a CD drive was 2012. CDs have completely lost out to phones and you should have put your music into a digital library a long time ago: it's smaller (a few electrons are amazingly portable), you can listen to it anywhere - CDs don't play well in small portable players if you want to walk along, you won't have to worry about scratching it and ruining playback, you can search your library a lot easier than rifling through a book of disks, etc.
Also, who has gotten rid of them? Every car I get into these days has one, but I never see anyone use them.

I took a short test drive in one the other day. I have been looking to replace 10 yr old honda van. Front seat with thigh extender way better than all the other suv and crossover-key is its wider and longer without a stiff bolster. I have sat in about every one out there. CVT didn't bother me and the doors closed with a thud. Interior is very nice. Biggest problem they only expect to make around 60k of them in first model year and they will sell. They wont be dealing. For those complaining about the cvt, I have considered the Highlander but they have been having a lot of trouble with the new 8 speed

2019 Ascent eyesight has saved me from numerous "rear ends" Also enjoy the pace cruise control in traffic. No more foot on brake off and so on in slow traffic. Other than two recalls, I've not had any problems and the SUV is great especially after I installed CONTINENTAL tires. Awesome.

Really like the pleasantly designed dash, center console, dials and steering wheel. A quantum leap from the usual Subie interior!! I have no problems with traditional CVT. I really don't understand why people are complaining about it's character. Hope that new motor doesn't inherit the notorious problems of the old 2.5l ! But looking at Alex's review, looks like Subaru has got things back to where they should be again.

I rode in my in-law's Nissan with the CVT and it did the "fake shift." I assume the reason that they do that is because people expect their transmission to shift. I have a 2018 Ford with an ecoboost and 10-speed. The only way I can tell the transmission shifted when accelerating is to keep an eye on the dashboard where it shows which gear it is in. The only time I've noticed a shift is when cruse control is on and going down a hill and it drops down a gear to hold the speed steady. Excellent review of the Subaru Ascent.

Great review Alex! My wife got the limited edition but she’s only getting about 17.2 mgp. Very disappointed about that. First couple of weeks was only getting about 13.5, so took it to Subaru to have them take a look at it. They said no issues were found and miraculously my mpg went up to 17 mpg. I’m planning on taking it back in so I can squeeze a couple more mpg’s. Hehe. Overall wife loves her new Subaru.
Our new Ascent has a serious technical problem. The check engine light came on and all the safety features shut down. Once at 400 miles and now at 1,000 miles. Dealer service had to call in the Factory Tech. They think it might be a bad wire and are ordering a "bulkhead wiring harness". Sounds like a pretty serious issue. 2 weeks in the shop.

The Subaru CVT system is like 60 front /40 rear by default assuming it's active torque split. The CVT Outback will do donuts easily so you know it's sending some decent power back there!!!
Wife and I on now on our 4th Subaru , and thanks to the awesome and fair fact based research you have provided we might have a fifth option to consider.

Wow, it’s so refreshing to watch your reviews. You provide so many details that the more detail oriented car buyers are looking for. Thank you and please keep up the amazing work. A few questions that I still have: 1) Does the Ascent have a center or rear hydraulic locking coupling that can transfer more than 50% power to the rear like the Pilot? Or does it simple rely on the brake torque vectoring (x-mode) alone to send power to the rear? 2) Does the eye sight work at slow speeds or stop and go traffic? Will it come to a stop WITHOUT turning adaptive cruise control off? I am okay with having to tap the accelerator after it stops as long as the adaptive cruise control is still on. 3) I heard the CVTs are the limiting factor for Subaru when it comes to certain off road conditions. Does the CVT limit power output when say only 2 diagonal wheels have traction? What’s the maximum % of power that can be sent to the rear? 40%? Thanks!
I agree with you about the CVT. Subaru should just keep CVT the way it should be.
Great review, but FYI, I've been told that the power distribution is 60/40, so, yes, most to the front, but only barely, like all recent Subaru automatics/CVTs. It is a continuously variable power split using the electronic clutched center differential. In X-Mode, as you probably know, it's 50/50, and the car tried to lock it there, instead of extensively varying it back to front or front to back. The 80/20 splits are a thing of the distant past.
The other difference is, with 4 wheel active torque vectoring, (same side inside turn pair) that power is shifted left to right or vice versa around turns. Previous Subarus with Active Torque Vectoring only did front wheels.
As a subaru tech I can confirm this statement
Every surface inside a vehicle cabin should be matte finish whenever possible. No "chrome", no piano black, nothing reflective to bounce sunlight into your eyes! Function over form.
Yes, I do understand the advantages of the 2.4T, but I wish that there was an H6 option, even though really few people would choose it, I’d get it.
Bernie Yep. Had Subaru 4-pots before. Have the 3.6L H6 now (a 2013 OB with the “real” 5EAT automatic... no CVT here). The lower stresses internally allow for greater longevity. Subaru turbos don’t exactly have a stellar history for bulletproof and forgiving long term reliability. Add in the stress of being nailed every time you need to accelerate an even heavier vehicle? Hard pass. This needed the 3.6 H6 at a minimum. And the people saying it’s more economical fail to grasp basic physics. Making power means fuel and air, whether you let it move normally through a big engine at lower density, or cram it into a tiny motor with a turbo, more power means more fuel. Period. Proof in the pudding: our 3.6R regularly exceeds the EPA numbers, and is only about 1.0-1.5 mpg shy of our previous 2.5L 4-banger... which never did achieve its EPA numbers, PLUS it was a gutless rolling roadblock. First car I ever owned that I couldn’t beat the EPA estimates. What a load of crap. Got rid of it and bought the 3.6L Outback. Much happier. Still undersprung and underdamped, but at least the engine and transmission work and I can count of them to go 200k miles easily.
DucFanDan I give Subaru props for not using a 2.0 turbo. At least they went with something bigger which would not require as much boost to make the power they want.
Thanks for the comment. I'm picking up my Outback Touring 3.6R tomorrow. My first Subaru. Test driving the 2.5i vs the 3.6R was like driving two totally different vehicles. While the 2.5i felt competent, yet exhibited some vibration, the 3.6R was smooth and powerful.

Great review! Do the roof racks have the integrated cross bars like the Outback? Is there a digital speedo readout? I am an avid outback owner. I am not sure I would switch, but the heavier towing rating is attractive.
Great review as always, Alex. I would prefer if however, on the 4 way split screen, you would slide the driver POV to the left and the camera of yourself narrating to the right. As it was, I kept looking down at the right corner and asking myself, "Why is he driving a right hand drive model in the US?"
BTW, your length charts that place the tested model vs. the competition are brilliant (I'm kind of surprised that no one has copied you on this yet) but if you could overlay some actual markers for scale (like every 5 inches or so), I think it would be even more helpful w/o getting too busy).
Love to see similar competitive charts for towing and 0-60 times too.
massive sized subaru, i wanted one about 5-6 years ago but they came short on trim, options etc... i think they would do well if they stepped it up a notch and tried to compete in the luxury market.
Alex: THANKS for this review! I've been waiting for this car for a year and a half now. Subaru, in my opinion, really lost thousands of sales by waiting this long to debut this model. Kia....is making the same mistake with their Teluride. I don't get it. Anyway.....you ask about the "value" of Subaru's symmetrical AWD. It....holds GREAT value....to me. I used to live in New England...in the hills where there was lots of snow. It is beyond believe.....where a Subaru will go in that stuff. Fantastic.
I want to love this car. Not sure if I do. I'll have to drive it. I LOVE Subarus......but I'm NOT crazy with their choice of a small displacement 4 cylinder engine. Should have been 2 offerings.....one of them being 6 cylinders. God knows....they have the engine already. But originally......this car was being purported as being "the size of a Chevy Tahoe". That's what all of the magazines were pumping. This car.....really isn't that much larger than my 2018 Sorento AWD. Only about 1 inch on each side inside....and only 6 inches front to rear. Disappointing. Can't wait to see your full review on this one!

Great review.... I only question your understanding of Subaru’s AWD system and how it works compared to other systems. From what I have been seeing and reading, it is not standard and offers some very promising advantages. I have seen it get out of situations that others fail. Again, great review. Richard Burguillos hi, I worked for Subaru. All Subarus, with the exception of the BRZ, have all wheel drive standard and there are no other options. The all wheel drive is fantastic for getting out of sticky situations as well. Audi has a comparable all wheel drive system as well.
The best AWD system now have the body it deserves.
Around 7 minutes in I catch myself checking repeatedly if I am running the video at 1.25 speed. Nope, it's just Alex racing through the review. Must have been one heck of an espresso.

Always love the content, Alex. Any plans on covering the redesigned Chevy Traverse? I know you covered the new Enclave, but GM seems to have differentiated these models enough where a standalone video would be helpful. Available reviews for this model are lacking, and none come close to yours!
The Tribeca was one of the best cars I have had, everyone I know who had one loved it. It didn't succeed because Subaru didn't support the product. Awful lease deals, the sales people had no idea how to sell it.
Nice vehicle, competitive value, good review as always.Personally I have nothing against CVT's so long as they're tough & reliable. They have improved a lot since they first came out. I recall reading one car maker (forgot which one) had a CVT where you could choose between the standard infinitely variable mode & the 'fake shift' mode. I think Subaru should adopt this switching option rather than just have the fake shift mode only if they want to make their actual & potential customers happier.
I used to love Subies. The Legacy wagons in the early 80's to early 90's were epic all-around vehicles. Small enough for agility in commuter traffic, big enough for family duties/groceries, the best on icy roads, great in dirt with adequate clearance for obstacles on rough dirt roads -- provided of course you chose manual transmission.
CVT's are a plague on humanity. Eeking out an extra mile per gallon, hell even 5 more mpg, is not worth making it painful to press the accelerator.

Not sure if people even notice but I do not like the side mirrors mounted on the doors. More and more car manufacturers have started doing this lately. I prefer them on the A pillars.
Nice review. I have the 2017 Outback Limited 3.6R with Eyesight and it's fantastic. I also have the same complaint about the CVT; however, I like the manual control for engine braking when I tow a trailer or just in traffic. In the midwest US winters, the AWD is a game-changer and it's nice not to have to blow out the snow at the end of the driveway in the morning to get to work. Subaru, like Toyota, put a lot of pride in understanding their customers and delivering top end value; no doubt some of the Toyota values rubbed off on Subaru in their past partnership with the Celica/SRX co-development as well as a lot of core cultural alignment in their business operation. In another year or two I'm going to trade one of our cars and it will likely be replaced by the Ascent. I wasn't impressed with the quality problems and lack of design refinement in the past 3 consecutive Hondas I had, especially the weak charging system and small battery. I have not had a Subaru let me down yet; I had two well-used older ones (92 Legacy and 99 Forester) before leasing a the Outback.

Seems like they did a lot of things right and this will become a very successful model.
How ironic, most reviewers love the CVT in Subarus because they simulate shifts. Alex dislikes it but seems alone in his complaint. It is to increase sales, plain and simple. Good review overall.
After shopping around for months and comparig cars, I ended up with a Crosstrek and it is by far the best car i have ever owned. (vs Escape, Compass, Sante Fe Sport and Kashkai). And for the value you get with the Crosstrek, just outweighed everything else. I did boil it down to a Crosstrek and an Escape for the bigger engine, but the amount of extras you get with the Crosstrek and better traction, i went with a Crosstrek.
But now, i found out i have a 3rd kid on the way. So if this Accent is just a super size version of the Crosstrek, I will be in love again.
I actually prefer a cvt. Consistent pull without the super high revs and annoying shift points. Reminds me more of a torquey diesel
I’m 5’10” tall and my head hit the ceiling while seated in the third row. I viewed the third row as child seating only, adults could not be seated back there for long. Sad about their choice of power plant as well. That is not a lot of displacement for all the weight. Hopefully Subaru has finally addressed their head gasket issue on the 4 cylinder. And I’m disappointed in the lack of a geared automatic transmission. I get wanting fuel economy, but at the cost of reliability I’m not impressed with the power and drive train combo. Others have already done better in this segment better.

Front row passenger seat is unacceptable. 4way is econobox level. My Outback: Self changing oil, whining CVT (although, it works great) road noise, horrific headlights and horrible tires. I've seen Ascent reviews where it slid in the rain. Tires. I got real tires (night and day in the snow) and Subaru fixed the oil, noise and headlight issues. My wife can't travel far in the OB because of the seat. Anyone with a bad back will look elsewhere. Mind blowing that a flagship car and can't have both front seats top of the line. Subaru said it would take regular gas. I could be wrong but one website that sells cars says it takes premium gas. Considering their history with Turbo issues, I can't imagine putting regular in it. Only the CX-9 is a regular gas turbo (more HP with the premium). OB is the #1 ticketed car in America and it's not from speeding. It's the 'always out' headlight. I still like the car because I've owned worse, including numerous way over rated Hondas. Just so short sighted to have the absolute worst passenger seat in the class.
Tom; Wow, you must have some faulty seats in your OB. My 2013 OB premium has awesome seats, better than my wife's 2018 Forester Limited IMO. I put 34k on my OB this past 12 months and enjoyed each mile in my comfy seats. Heading out in two days for a 2,400 mile jaunt. Good luck with it in the future.
My question is on long drives does your arm have a soft place to rest while driving! I don’t care about wood trim I care about long distance driving comfort. Please try to answer my question or rather anyone.
My dream family car we are saving trying to get one before our beautiful princess in born we have 5more months to save. praying we can get it and super excited. We definitely need a bigger family car and who better to choose the subaru

You can use the shifters in Drive mode no need to go to Manual mode
Excellent review, Alex. And timely. Owning a 2017 Subaru Legend, I've had my eye on this vehicle. Here are my 2 questions. You mention the Mazda CX9 quite a bit. How does it stack up against this vehicle. Second question is, for those of us simply looking for 7-8 passenger seating and all wheel drive, how does this measure up against the Toyota Sienna, the only mini-van that offers 4 wheel drive (albeit this crosses two different types of vehicles).

Luxury aside, do you prefer a new Subaru Ascent Limited or a used fully loaded 2017 Infinity QX60? They should be in the same price range.

Really looks like a good fit for our needs...but a shame they didn't go the extra mile for memory power folding mirrors and a 360 camera!

nice review. I cannot possibly agree more on the CVT and it simulating gears. I get the 'give people what they want' but I think you should be able to override that when people are being dumb. If I had a sports car, maybe I want ratios just to traditional feel. But a SUV or van? give me a CVT being a CVT. Its better for performance. Better mileage. Its such a joy in the mountains compared to a hunting automatic. I have a 14 forester with CVT that acts like a CVT. I had a newer subaru as a dealer courtesy car and it pretended to be a traditional auto. I liked mine much more.

From the side without the roof rails it looks very similar to the Kia Sorento, to me at least.
