  • Iris photography is very tricky, but it's amazing to get a close-up image of the eye. When it comes to getting images of your own eye, there are a lot of factors to consider!
    Choice of lighting, placement and distance are all a factor in reducing reflections and capturing an amazing image of the human eye.

    Wow literally was researching how to do this a few days ago. I'm planning to 3d Print a head stand so that I can do this sat down at the desk. Will need to expand my adaptalux studio collection to get a white LED though

      A head stand would be a great help for sure, and having someone else around to do a quick focus for you is a bonus too! Let us know how you get on with your shoot!

      It does, the darkness of the pupil really looks like the centre of the flower at a glance!

    Been reading a very interesting book on Iridology by Adam J. Jackson which contains many health related insights, including how the IRIS maps the body and can flag underlying issues - a bit dated but seems fairly thorough and sound on many levels. Otherwise, many more modern titles out there which I've yet to look into but first step is imaging your IRIS. ; )

    Woow that's very cool Ben. Thanks for the video. Can I ask which set up in the camera did you use? ISO, shutterspeed and f.
    I have tried with some LED but I need quite a high ISO to get a nice result and the pic get quite grainy. I have also tried with a Speedlight and it gets better in terms of quality, but the reflection on the eye is quite too strong. Any advice?

      Most of these were taken at f11 1/60th and ISO 800. My only suggestion to get better settings would be to use the right light. More light means better settings!

      You should take a look at the Pod Mini that is coming soon, it's a more affordable option for getting started!

    This was a fascinating one Ben! Eyes are a fascinating subject in their own right, but photographing them is even more so! I had to Google Keratoconus! I've never even heard of it before! Nice one.

      Thanks, Ash, they really are cool to look at. It's not too well-known of a condition, but it's a real pain and is not easy to fix. I did notice that my pupil is way off-center but otherwise I think you need to know what you're looking for to spot these things!

      @@Adaptalux General Advice regarding Keratoconus: Lifestyle and Natural Methods
      Diet: Incorporate antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, selenium, and zinc into your diet. These can help protect your corneas from oxidative stress.
      UV Protection: Always wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful rays.
      Avoid Eye Rubbing: Rubbing your eyes can worsen keratoconus. Try to keep your allergies under control to reduce the urge to rub your eyes.
      Eye Exercises: Practices like the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away) can help reduce eye strain.

    There is a solution to this problem when using flash. I have the a7iii as well. Go to menu's second tab, 6th page out of 9. You will find "Live View Display". It has two options: on and off. If you turn it off, you will be able to see your subject before flashing it. I have put it in my function button (fn) menu for quick access. (Don' t forget to turn it on, after the shooting!).

    I've done this a couple of years ago too! That being said mine were nowhere near as nice as your photos 😂😂 I found it was easy to keep my head still with a few books and keeping my chin on them. I've also read that flash isn't really good because it causes damage to your eyes. I did mine with flash and after a few shots my eyes were hurting quite badly so definitely not recommended! LED or even natural light is the way to go.

    • @Adaptalux
      @Adaptalux  Рік тому +2

      The books is a good idea, I think any kind of bracing will help so whatever is most comfortable will probably work best. I was laying on the floor for quite a while! I did try a few flash shots, on a low power setting I didn't find it too bad, but yes you do need to be careful not to shine too much light directly into the eye!

    Are you saying your flash system is not as good as your continuous LED system for photographing eyes?

    • @Adaptalux
      @Adaptalux  11 місяців тому

      Just for photographing your own eye using this method. For shooting someone else's eye it would just be down to personal preference, either would work and have different advantages depending on your approach.

    no, every mirrorless cam can set to lighten up the display for e.g. studio work with flashes.

    • @Adaptalux
      @Adaptalux  10 місяців тому

      True, but the Sony A7II only brightens momentarily upon a half shutter press, nowhere near long enough to be able to focus on my own eye with a manual lens. It's much easier to do this with continuous light, at least when shooting your own eye without help.

    How did you photograph your whole iris, did you force your eyelids open?

    • @Adaptalux
      @Adaptalux  Рік тому

      If you position the camera slightly above and look up while widening your eyes, you should be able to do it without holding your eye open. However, I did sometimes pull down my bottom eyelid for a moment.
