I hate when the media interviewers ask players those trap questions where the player looks bad however they answer. Best response is to say no comment. Otherwise you might be throwing your teammates and coaches under the bus or taking responsibility yourself for the team's shortcomings, either way it makes the player look bad. Players have the right to be upset at the interviewers for asking crappy questions.

Yeah it sucks. They do these questions on purpose to get ads revenue from clicks on this interview and such. But it makes the players look bad. =\

Not an Oilers fan, but Leon showed loads of patience here. Of course he doesn't want to be there. It's required by the league. If they were both in the same room I doubt Matheson would have had the balls to provoke him that way. I've seen some sports media discussing this today, and I thought it was kind of like the police investigating themselves. Leon deserves an award for the restraint he showed here. Matheson has been doing this job for awhile, he surely can see the guy is not going to open up. Why is he pushing his buttons? I think it's obvious who the aggressor is. Why is the reporter so emotionally wrapped up in this? When Leon says "nope. You go ahead. You know everything".
He's saying, screw you loser. I hope this reporter gets all the negative feedback he deserves.

Backstory: According to Bob Stauffer (Oilers play by play colorman with 630CHED), Matheson was "running around all morning looking for a fight"... Seems like things were a tad premeditated.

The main reason the Oilers lost waa lack of Goals...Matheson obviously doesn't know Hockey well enough to ask questions about shuffled lines, longer shifts, or lack of a stable roster.

11:33 This part is incorrect. To say that Leon gave him nothing is blatantly false. Leon gave him the best answer to his question since there wasn't just one thing to get better at. "Everything" was a valid answer. Jim was clearly looking for Leon to throw someone under the bus. Leon is not in the position to call out one thing on the team that needs fixing. That's management and the front office to work on, that's not a question for Leon.
Oilers fans are sick of Matheson asking the players stupid questions but he'll give management a lot of soft balls. They're too afraid to lose their credentials for doing their job.
Overall, it's a great breakdown of the exchange than most podcast put out there trying to piggy back off the click bait.

Although slightly more adversarial and directed personally, this is quite typical with Leon and this reporter. The mutual dislike has been obvious for years. JM knows the buttons to push with Leon and this time he did. Why...? who knows. This reporter is well past his prime and clearly just tolerated by his peers and coaches/atheletes. Nothing surprising after watching this for years. Damn entertaining though. Enjoyed your breakdown of the exchange.

Brodie, I liked this. This is the best commentary I've seen on this. Lots of media types jumped to Jim Matheson's defense as they have a right to. Lots of us fans jumped to Leon's defense. Leon can be an ornery guy of that there is no doubt. He's also the second best or 1A player on the team and an assistant captain who thought after years of struggling that the team was moving toward annual contention the past few seasons. The GM spent $25 million in the off season on what he thought would improve the team. It's very much up for debate if it has made them better or worse. Jim Matheson has covered the Oilers forever perhaps he feels he has certain leeway or right to get answers from players. That's certainly what I took from this exchange. He wasn't going to stop until he got the answers he wanted and when he didn't he wanted to escalate the interaction.
I've been an Oilers fan for 35 years so I watch all these media sessions on Twitter or UA-cam. From my observation a number of Oiler players have issues with the local media and the questioning. A number of them don't like the way Matheson asks questions or the type he asks. It's not just Leon. Most just answer and move on but the body language says they have no time for it. Leon, as is his personality, doesn't care. If he doesn't like the question or doesn't want to be at the podium you know it. What I can tell you, at least from my perspective is Leon cares. He cares greatly in fact. He and McDavid signed long term to win there in Edmonton. Both are extremely frustrated with the team and its evolution. Their frustration has been obvious on and off the ice the past month or so. That's not good for us fans as we wonder how long it is until they both as for a new address. However, that's another topic for another day.
The media in Edmonton and its not just Jim Matheson but others as well have covered the team and been around hockey long enough to know when the players are short tempered. Yesterday was one of those days and Matheson for sure but Leon as well should have looked at ways to defuse the situation instead of escalate it. I really have no problem with the exchange when I watch it again. Jim and Leon are human and both have emotions and both may have been looking for something. However, with the team in the situation and Edmonton being a small market cold Canadian city an exchange like that going viral does nothing to help the team today or going forward. Hopefully, today's media availability goes smoother or soon enough I think the Oiler players will refuse to even do this and simply take the league or team fine to avoid it.
One last thing I will say is if Jim Matheson plans to have a go at one of the pillars of the team on the ice then the fan base would like him to have a go at the team owner, team president, general manager and coach in the same fashion as they are just as much responsible for the performance of the team as the players.
    Doug

I saw jim matheson at a grocery store in Edmonton yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Low point of the season for sure. We were six points out of the playoffs at this point, and now we've clinched a playoff spot as well as being one win away from clinching home ice to boot. Leon has 55 goals, and 108 points with three games left in the regular season. Huge turnaround when we fired Tip, and promoted Jay Woodcroft to head coach.

This was incredibly unprofessional on the part of Matheson. I think we have all seen teams go through losing streaks. Hell the sharks struggled hard through a long one last season. Interviews become almost painful. Obviously anyone involved or invested in the team want to see the team turn things around. With that said if everything in professional sports were that simple..well you would have a lot more people involved in professional sports. Sometimes you can do the right things to get yourself back on track and still not get the bounces. In general Draisaitl kept it pretty calm given the tone of the questions.

You watch the questions the media asks. A few years ago it was all about winning face offs so the team improved. Earlier this year we were winning games but the media was complaining about the goals against. Crazy. We have an offensive team. Run and gun. I liked it. Well now our coach is trying to reduce the goals against and if you look at the losses over the last month there have been very few goals against but fewer for. Now the media is complaining about the losses. I think when you complain to much everyone gets sick of it. Think about when your wife nags and complains. How gracious are you?
How quickly the media wants trades, wants someone fired or thinks they can run the team better. I’m sick of it and the players are sick of it and its starting to show. How sweet it would be if the team heard positive reinforcements instead of the nagging. Turn off the media and watch patiently as they transform into a defensive powerhouse. Would everyone be happy then? Would we find something new to bitch about? What do you think Jim? Tim

Just going to throw this out there. Is the NHL telling Canadian Teams to "Tank" because of the Covid border restrictions? Is the NHL preemptively avoiding the inevitable circus that the playoffs will become with the insane restrictions that are being placed on everyone at the Canadian Border? The regular season is fast becoming a gong show with the protocols taking players out of the line up. Will this be the first season ever without a single Canadian team in the Playoffs? That might be too obvious but a 1st Round exit by the TML would actually be expected, and serve to give "plausible deniability" to the league that they don't want ANY Canadian teams to participate in the playoffs in the current Covid situation. Vancouver will likely "just miss" the playoff cut and look for the Jets to go on a "sudden slide". Look at what has happened to the Flames of late. Suddenly they are tanking too?

I've seen noticeable dips from Oilers and Canucks after forced breaks.

17:11 Hire better people. You said so yourself earlier, you would not have taken the questioning where it went. Matheson is a hack and bottom feeder, and the fact this clown is in any HoF, is an insult to said HoF. Matheson should've been let go, decades ago already.
This is 100% on Jim. I would've responded, far, far, FAR worse than Leon did. So, props to Draisaitl for keeping his composure, where you could see in his face at the end, he wanted to unload on this parasitic slug.

Yeah fault on both sides. First of all, almost everyone agrees that the Oilers biggest problem is goaltending. That said, Draisaitl didnt want to throw his goalies under the bus - nor should he. Matheson the reporter irresponsibly tried to bait him and that just agravated Draisaitl further.

I think both were in the wrong. However, Matheson overstepped his boundaries as a media member, especially when asking "why are you so pissy?" not once, but twice. You said it best, Brodie. What was Draisaitl supposed to say? I get that Matheson was trying to get more out of Draisaitl, but when the bear isn't in the mood to be poked, you stop. That's also something you pointed out. Now, should Draisaitl have shot back with "you do it, you know everything"? Probably not, but I understand him getting undoubtedly irritated with Matheson's question. When you poke the bear too many times that's just not really in the mood, you should expect an aggressive responsive, because whether or not that's the answer you wanted, that's what you get! So, I completely understand it from Draisaitl's POV. In the end, Matheson... bruh... respect the player's time and they're probably more likely to answer you next time. That and rephrase your questions so that they don't sound so ridiculous.
A few others have said this, too, by the way, but I really like your breakdown of the interview. Great insight and observations!

I think far too often athletes are allowed to sit up in a presser and just act like a spoiled child who just lost his Xbox privileges. You’re a professional athlete getting paid a lot of money to play a game publicly as a job and guess what, when ya do a bad job you also have to answer publicly on why people should continue to spend their money to come see you play. You don’t want to answer? Great! Go home, tell the team they can spend the money on someone who feels like acting like a responsible adult.

You’d think a Hall of Fame writer would come up with better questions. Asking why you’re losing day after day for a month and expecting him to call out his goalie or come up with a new and insightful revelation would annoy and frustrate anyone, especially when every question is negative.
