  • After the 2024 NHL Draft, Mike Grier and the San Jose Sharks have built one of the best prospect pools in the entire league. Sebastian High of Locked on NHL Prospects gives his thoughts on the Sharks' prospect pool, how the foundation is set with William Eklund, Macklin Celebrini, and Will Smith, and why Sam Dickinson was exactly what the Sharks needed on the blue line. Then, examine the Sharks' greatest strength in their forward group and who the Sharks could have four first-round picks down the middle, as well as plenty of complementary pieces thanks to their recent drafts. Then, look at the areas Mike Grier will need to focus on as the Sharks continue their rebuild, including finding a high-end goalie prospect and another blue-chip defenseman.

    Who would Hagens fit better with, Smith or Celebrini? :)

    I also liked how you pointed out that GMMG has used multiple ways to acquire talent as well. whether it was signing undrafted free agents, picking up players from waivers, trades, drafting and other means GMMG has used every tool at his disposal to grab talent and has made the Sharks as destination for players sooner than we thought was possible.
    GMMG also put together a good staff to evaluate talent which shows in their draft selections and acquiring talent from other teams. GMMG has not shied away from making the moves the sting and trades that have mostly panned out. No one (including myself) liked the Timo Meier trade but we all fail to take into account that he has a good staff evaluating the best deal with the teams willing to make the trade.
    I am sure he takes what he and his staff believe is the best offer at the time but he has kept to the type of player he wants to build the team with. I really appreciate it as a long time fan. The most recent example of why we need the GMMG type player is when we got toasted by the Blues. They were built in the mode that GMMG is building now.
    This was a common aspect of the previous regime. Small skilled players that in the end falter and fail against bigger and faster teams. I think that GMMG is building a team that can compete for the cup. Big, fast, talented, physical with a mean streak and deep (another reason we would eventually get beat).

    Hey bro beans. We can't stress the stutzle pick we lost. I'll never forget it, but it is what it is. And if we didn't belly flop the karlsson trade, we wouldn't be Celebrini rich

      Might have been necessary for this team to be good in a few years

      Well, thinking about Stutzle is like constantly following your ex's instagram after they got promoted, married, and kids...

    Timofei Obvinstev is a goalie you should watch out for. The Maple Leafs have him. He is by far the goalie we'll need in the Future.
    I would suggest trade a pick 4th round pick & a goalie.

    Really liked the show and I agree with your assessment of the prospect pool and what it still lacks. I would like to add some names to your list of prospects that I think will make an impact with the Sharks but on the second/third pair on defense and the bottom six on forwards.
    For defense I would like to add Hache, Furlong, Laroque, Fisher, Landen and Pohlkamp. These are players that I believe will factor into the Sharks future to add to Dickinson, Emberson, Thrun, Shakir, Havelid, Leo Sahlin Wallenius and Thompson.
    At forward I like what I have seen in Graf, Lund, Svoboda, Cardwell, Robins, and Laubach. I also really liked the late round selections GMMG and his staff made as well.
    These players are key to a team that wants to win a championship and as you stated, you never know if one or more of them will pop off and become more than was expected (like little Joe).

    Last thing. I also agree with you about how the Sharks have gone about acquiring goalie talent. We are however missing two things. One of which you pointed out was the top line goalie prospect that projects to be a starter. There is another that I do not believe you mentioned and that is the next goalie in line for the immediate future.
    What we have now is two goalies recently drafted that are years away (maybe in four they might see the Cuda?). The Sharks are high on them though but again years away.
    In the Cuda we have two more goalies which neither of them look like they will be starters in the NHL. Maybe one of them could be a decent backup in a couple years?
    Then on the Sharks we have two often injured goalies that look to be a pretty solid tandem but neither are signed for more than two years. Blackwood was hurt again last season (is this a continuing theme?) and Vanacek came to us injured. Are they the goalies you want to lead the team when we get the young core established? I do not think so.
    This is where there is a whole in the Sharks goalie pool. They do not have a goalie of the future that they can be confident in. Currently they have two short-term often injured goalies that are not under contract for more than the next two seasons. Both of whom the team who had them were willing to trade for a goalie we didn't want and a late round pick.
    I also do not think continuing with a patch-work goalie tandem is the answer either. Which is what the Sharks have been doing for a very long time. I believe they need to identify a young goalie that can be the future to grow with the young core and supplement the current goalies we have presently.
    this is where I disagree with you on Askarov. I believe he can fill that hole and as you stated will be ready sooner rather than later. He is not injury prone and his record in the AHL is stellar (30-13-1 at a .911 save percentage) along with his two starts in the NHL (1-0 with a save percentage of .943). Personality does not come into whether the Sharks should acquire him. I refer you to Ed Belfour. He was "out there" too but he won a cup with Colorado and was an awesome goalie. His play style does not matter either. It is a results based business and he has results. I also believe that any concerns that he is "out there" can be taken care of by Speers as long as his playing style (if that is an issue to the sharks). I believe in Speers being able to get him to reach his peak.
    Neither Romanov or Chrona can come even close to matching Askarov in talent or results. He fills a need in our pipeline and prospect timeline. He will provide immediate help to the Cuda as he would solidify the Cuda's goalie situation along with providing the third goalie the Sharks can have confidence in putting into the net if Vanacek or Blackwood gets injured.
    It also provides the Sharks with options as well. With Blackwood entering his final year of his contract and Vanacek only one more year on his contract, this allows the Sharks to keep the best of the two and have Askarov slide in after. He can grow with the young talent coming in and solidify a position that has been a sore point for years. IMO.

    JD got a quick question for you, that Celebrini jersey, how’s the quality, I’m looking at getting one. Is it worth it?

      @Staxxx23 25 днів тому +2

      I went to the store the day of the release it’s honestly pretty bad quality I would suggest to buy the adidas sweater instead of fanatics

    • @graB92
      @graB92 25 днів тому

      That's one of the cheap ones. The better quality ones have the fanatics logo between the collar and name plate. I've not seen one up close yet but they're supposed to be the same quality as adidas

      @@graB92 I saw those ones at the draft they’re nice, fanatics was actually letting people touch and feel the jersey outside of the sphere, but the sharks shop isn’t selling the real ones at the moment also it looks like it’s about $500 for a real one
