  • Directed by Martin Wedderburn and Bronagh Keegan, The Howling is The Phantom Band's first single proper from their intergalactically acclaimed debut 'Checkmate Savage'.
Filmed at various locations around Glasgow, with a 40 strong following of the band's fans standing in as cast and extras, the video was shot over the course of one long day. Locations were diverse: the Doublet bar in Glasgow's West End kindly giving their premises over free of charge for the morning's filming. Glasgow actor Allan Tall - who can be seen in Braveheart! - was enlisted for the role of the tramp in the Clyde underpass (fitting in filming between a matinee and evening performance of Scottish Opera's production of Cosi Fan Tutti).
Keen (as always) to maintain a certain degree of cabalistic inscrutability, The Phantom Band opted to don some rather fetching tetrahedron masks for the shoot - full frontal(!) cameos can be found within the video though if you're fleet of foot and eagle-eyed - the masks were hand made by director Martin Wedderburn and have been changing hands on ebay for upwards of £100 apparently.
What's the video about? Don't ask us, but it does contain the following:
    car accident
    a flare
    tetrahedron masks
    a tramp
    woodland
    pubs
    tetrahedron masks
    hand clapping
    alcohol
    leery drunkeness
    tetrahedron masks
the afterlife? death? near death? dreams? nightmares?
we told you not to ask us.
The extremely limited edition 7" single is out at the end of May and features exclusive artwork by comic book artist/legend Frank Quitely. For those of you keen to get your hands on the album, feel free to check out Chemikal Underground's Online Shop where you can purchase a copy here:

Thanks to Martin, Bronagh, Ray and all at MTP for delivering us such a great video.

I was camping in a field last week when this came on the radio. What a treat. I made a note. So pleased I did. Now I return. This is a gorgeous thing x
    The Howling
    The Phantom Band
    Timely certain darkness come
    Lay your finger down
Close my eyes and still my tongue
    Make me dust again
    Something nameless
    A creeping unrest
Hard as we tried to be blessed
Always we ended up with less
    Than we started with
Will there be a ghost on the day I die?
    Following, fallen, dust I tried
To live beyond my lust and lie
    It's all that I was
Well carry my body on the reckoning wind
    Howling, howling
Fate shall brightly descend to love
Then take flight, then take flight
To bide away in an eerie hive
    Between the day and night
    But on earth when use
    Timely our troops
Set your fingers under the noose
You held my legs and you cut me loose
And sent me through the gate
Well carry my body on the reckoning wind
What was flesh is dust again
Leave my spirit 'cause lust and sin
    Is all that I was
Will there be a ghost on the day we die?
    Howling, howling
    Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh
Will there be a ghost on the day I die?
    Following, fallen, dust I tried
To live beyond my lust and lie
    It's all that I was
Well carry my body on the reckoning wind
    Howling, howling
    Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh
Carry my body on the reckoning wind
What was flesh is dust again
Leave my spirit 'cause lust and sin
    Is all that I was
Will there be a ghost on the day we die?
    Howling, howling
    Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh
    Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh
    Oh, oh, oh, ohh
    Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh
    Oh, oh, oh, ohh
    Ah, ah, ah, ah-ah

13 years on ... Was there or thereabouts for song of the year then ... Would be even closer if it came out now.
Had all their kit stolen a day or so before I was due to see them for the third time ....
    Love this band

One of the best new bands to come along in a while. I fell in love with them and bought Checkmate Savage as soon as it was released.

This song has a strange fascination for me. This band and this song never really hit the heights, yet it's got such That strange distorted bass? sound and really unusual mix of sounds thrown in, like the high pitched keyboard notes.
So worried I wouldn't be able to hear it again. Must be at least 5 years since I listened to it. All I could remember was the word howling. PhewSo relieved to play it again

One of the best upbeat existential songs about death ever!
"What was flesh is dust again. Leave my spirit 'cause lust and sin is all that I was."
Very much looking forward to the new album Strange Friend on June 2nd.
"Carry my body on the reckoning wind, howling...howling!"
