    I think NBA Franchises have just as much to do with a player "busting" as the player does. Theres a direct correlation between a disfunctional franchise and the bust potential. Its clear franchises like Sacramento, Minnesota, and even Golden State back in the day before they got bought out that those franchises had terrible scouting, development and personnell in place that contributed to their prospects failing time and time again. The NBA lottery is meant for teams who struggle to get top picks in the futures talent. Teams come and go, but Minnesota, Sacramento and Golden State (back in the day) used to consistently be there. That meant there were failing components somewhere or everywhere in the chain of a player getting drafted to developing into a bad, good, or great player. Obviously the player himself has a lot to do with it. How much work he puts in, how much effort he puts into getting better, what routes he takes in his personal life and time, ect... But the franchises dont get nearly as much blame as they should. We joke about Anthony Bennett, but Anthony Bennett had no right being the first overall pick. The Cavs didnt even know they were picking him until they picked him. The draft isnt a science, its a lottery. Teams can do the most and best scouting, they can get the guys in for workouts, run the analytics, run simulations, get a personality indicator, they get see how hed fit in the system, ask coaches, run backgrounds, conduct interviews, and still get it wrong. Hindsight is always 20/20 with the drafts and anyone who tells you its not luck is lying. None of that is to say the research and effort put behind a draft isnt worth it, or doesnt matter, but at the end of the day its luck. My main point is just this, teams need to get blamed more for players busting. How many times in all sports where drafts are a thing, has a player been drafted to a terrible organiztion, or be put in situtations that arent favourable to his/her success and they flop. How many times have some of those guys gone on to have great careers when they were given what they needed to succeed. Look at Camron Payne, or Giannis, Kyle Lowry, Steve Nash or even James Harden to a certain degree. Guys who either were developed correctly, and given what they needed (Giannis) to guys like Payne, Lowry or Harden who just needed to be put in the right situations and some trust to thrive. Its all a gamble at the draft, but I think a lot of players have the potential to be good or great players. I think everything that comes after the draft is on them AND the organization to see it through.

    Team culture and chemistry and SYSTEM have a large part to play here. I feel like teams have to put more stock in mental and emotional maturity, that’s just as good of a gage as physical as far as I’m concerned.

      @@jarrodborders1235 Especially when it comes to creating a winning culture.
      The Cavs are a great example of creating a winning culture with younger players that they drafted/acquired, a bright young point guard in garland - who knows how to initiate offense and get his teammates involved (still learning but he's already great), Evan Mobley - a unicorn on offense, and fantastic defensively; Jarret Allen (whom also came from another team already and acclimated directly into the cavs core identity) - a fantastic interior defender, who's also mobile enough to stay on players, limiting mismatches; Dovonan Mitchell - Whose already a star and offensive powerhouse, easing scoring and pace by being able to create his own shot and play well in the system; and the rest of the roster all contribute and pull their own weight. This is due in large part because they are well coached and they can utilize their skills to help the team, they actually listen to their coach (J.B. was a great hire and genuinely knows the importance and minutia of player development). J.B. also knows how to define the system that helps best suit the players and can engage in constructive criticism in a mature and understandable way. The players are willing to adapt to help each other win games, which, unsurprisingly, helps define team culture. The kings are also another recent example, but so are the grizzlies, warriors, and Celtics.
      The main underlying constant in this example - Emotional, Mental, and Physical Maturity of the players themselves, they are listening for advice and actively trying to get better, not just focusing on what they're already good at and being selfish - or at least actively doing the steps to become better for the teams. The best teams realize this effort and put stock into development to better the team culture and winning atmosphere. Too many players I believe "chase a check" and that's a big reason NBA basketball's nowhere near as competitive as it should be in my opinion.

    Mentality wise, two players I can think of are Ben Simmons and Andrew Wiggins.
    Ben had the talent of an MVP, however because of his mentality when it comes to scoring, he's never gonna reach that MVP potential. And look, I'm a Nets fan, I can appreciate what Ben does well, but it would be foolish of me to not acknowledge his wasted potential, because of his fear of shooting. Andrew Wiggins is similar, Wiggins when coming into the NBA had MVP potential, however he just didn't have the mentality to achieve that potential. Wiggins was an awful defender for most of his career and would take really bad shots when he was with Minnesota. However, going to Golden State, he was surrounded by vets to motivate him into an All-Defense level player and taking more efficient shots.

What do we need as an organisation to develop players into? But also, franchises fail because they see the physical side of a player, but largely ignore the mental. It's an upbringing process, not just a skills development. As for Luka, Yannis and Porzingis, the NBA just has no idea what is out side the US. Yannis is Greek, but also very Nigerian in his body pride. Also, his family are immigrants in a deeply hostile environment. They fight for what they get. And on, and on. Psychology is complex

(An interesting future episode might be each franchise's biggest missed pick. Many franchises might share the same missed pick.) And the league does change rapidly. A true center like Jah Okafor entered the league as it was going away from traditional centers. He could have had a successful career in an earlier era. But honestly, I think lately; everyone has it wrong on draft night to some extent. The Mavs lucked up and got the best in the draft; but if they'd drafted 1st that night would they have really picked him? They didn't really know what they had just like Joker in Denver.

    Someone said to this once the Lakers would get everyone but no they wouldn't. Maybe they get a lot of kids at first but then they are winning a lot of games and cant offer money or maybe even playing time. Or maybe they have LeBron and AD, if you're Zion do you want to go there and come off the bench? Or consider James Wiseman. The Warriors can't offer him no pressure minutes to learn the game and get comfortable. Of course an 18yo is going to want to join a contender but hopefully someone in their camp would say No, join the Spurs and work with Tim Duncan, join the Rockets and try to talk to Hakeem, go to a team who can turn you into a max player. At the pro level you’re splitting hairs on what makes a guy better for your team. So many of these guys are close in level it’s about finding the guys who fit systems and all that jazz. They call generational players that name because they come so rarely and it isn’t easy to find or land them.

    Boston getting Smart, Brown, Tatum, and Williams through the draft and making a Finals disagrees with this assessment.

      I mean, no it doesn’t? I genuinely think the Celtics are one of the best drafters in the league but that doesn’t mean that there was no luck involved in them succeeding with those picks. They can be good at drafting and have gotten lucky at the same time, those statements are not mutually exclusive.

      I hate losing Danny's drafting. We have yet to see what Stevens can do with a first round pick. But even Danny had the occasional Fab Melo and JR Giddens.

      Jimmy Butler, Steve nash, Gary Payton, Scottie Pippen, John Stockton, Kawhi Leonard all had terrible rookie years. Theres alot of players that need time to develop before cutting them off and labeling them a bust. Some players dont develop into their role until they hit their mid 20s. At the end of the day the draft is a lottery. You never know if ull get a jimmer fredette or a steph curry. A zion williamson or an anthony Bennett. A john wall or a markelle fultz. A ben simmons or a magic johnson..

    Lmaooo celtics passed up two busts with simmons and Ingram to take jaylen brown. They passed on two busts the next year in fultz and lonzo to take one of the best players in the NBA, Jayson tatum. Danny fleeced so many teams on trades and in the draft, that he had to retire because people were scared to do business with him.

    • @theman4884
      @theman4884 Рік тому

      I am not sure many people are call Ingram a bust. His numbers and Browns were very close last year. Brown is pull out a little bit this year. The Tatum move was brilliant on Danny's part. It is a shame that extra pick didn't become more.

      This just prove you don't watch the NBA games aren't you, So please remove Brandon Ingram & Lonzo Ball on your list, these 2 are not bust. The LA Lakers screw both Ingram & Lonzo and LA head office blame both players for their incompetence. For starter Lonzo Ball should be Bulls franchise player instead of Zack Lavine. Chicago Bulls are very good team but After Lonzo is injured everything when downhill. Just look at the Bulls now are they that good now without Lonzo on the court. Brandon Ingram is the most important player Pelicans team who is currently 3rd western standing.
