The buckwheat was in blossom, it's time to mow it down and let it compost into the soil. There are several to choose from when planting for the purpose of green manure. Buckwheat, winter rye and annual alfalfa being the the best. Some will also use winter peas or crimson clover, sometimes it depends on your area, soil and climate. Green manure puts natural nitrogen back into the soil, it is used in place of animal based manure.
