- Mixing hip hop legends like Jay-Z and Kanye, you learn a thing or two about how to make your mixes pop. Irko is that guy and he recently sat down with me to talk about his mixing approach.
In this interview we cover some actionable stuff that you can implement in your mixes right away, including:
A hack to finishing mixes
The "Half dB Rule"
The biggest mixing mistake Irko used to make
How to know for sure that you're making your mix better
And more...
If you haven't checked out Irko's videos either, then hit up his UA-cam channel ( / irkosb ) and show him some love!
How about Irko mixes one of your rock recordings and you mix one of Irko's hip-hop recordings and see what happens with the different aesthetics?
Big thumbs up on that one.
THIS!!!^^^
THANK YOU GOD!!!!!!!!!! A VIDEO ON HIP HOP!!!!! PLEASE do more. I know it's prob not your thing but man I'd love to see what you have to offer! Thanks graham!
He seems like a genuine guy!! Very lively!! Great interview!!
Needed to hear that bit about the solo button. Thank you.
JAZZ oh hey we meet again!
My arch enemy - the solo button!
Lion's Heart Productions You dere too bro lmao
On Ardour DAW there is a nice feature about that. You can set how much the other channels will be lowered when you solo a track ( -inf => Mute, 0 dB => Solo doesn't work ).
This way you can't be tempted to solo a Channel :D
And this automatically does the thing IRKO says in the video :)
I actually use the solo button to accentuate the characteristics of a sound.then I'll mix it out with the rest of the tracks. For me it's a 2 step process
Thanks Graham...his enthusiasm is contagious!!!!
Graham, Thank you for all your work and insight. I started as a rapper and was getting terrible mixes from various engineers so I taught myself through hours of reading and studying how things worked even when the weather was great and I wanted to go outside. I stopped doing music for a while because it was exhausting. Now I'm back into and love it but making the transition to digital was daunting not to mention I felt light years behind people who went to school for mixing. Lately it seems like every kid with a laptop can mix and have really depreciated the value of the art by mixing for $10-$20 an hour. after 20 years of mixing in my home with various artist-some big names and most not I find myself doubting my ability to mix because I no longer own any outboard gear and a huge console. Your videos give me hope because I love mixing in the box at home and since I'm no wiz at most outboard gear the digital realm is now where I feel most comfortable. Thank you
Graham's so chill dude
One of the best videos you've ever done
Really awesome interview! Thank you! I just started following Irko two days ago after UA-cam suggested a video and boom you interviewed him!
Great interview! I learned, enjoyed, and inspired at the same time. God bless you, guys!
AAAAHHH 😱😱😱 The Thumbnail alone had me screaming !! 😍 so excited to watch this!
Amazing!
Best interview on your channel yet Graham.
Thanks so much for this, inspired me again.
more collabs!!! irko seems like such a cool dude! nice vid Graham!
Maaan, this two guys are pure inspiration! Very cool and fresh video. Graham is asking very useful questions which help to understand mixing pihilosophy better, than just how to use a plugin. Thx a lot
Great interview all the way around! Really good information from Irko ( his sit downs are really informative) and Grahm looking at it from producing your own music. Such as finding alternatives to achieving that sense of separation between artist ears and engineer.
Graham man... May God continue to bless you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Amazing info. Loved the hate on the solo button and that Irko uses the same reference as we do. Thank you Graham.
Hybrid Studios is our favorite studio to work in as well.
I love irko! His videos are, such an amazing engineer!
Must be validating for Graham that Irko watches TheRecordingRevolution videos
P Delano for real
I learned some of these things prior to the video but I love the tip about printing your mixes in phases to make sure you're actually improving on what was sent to you and improving/tweaking what you have already done. Good video and I would love to see you do more hip hop oriented things in the future.
ahahah "stay away of the solo button" ahah this dude killed me but it do sound so right
Would love to see you do hip hop,Thanks guys
Great interview! Both guys seem humble and authentic
My favorite one. Because I know Irko. He's a great person and an incredible engineer...
The part about the solo button is just superb.
This is a great interview! I just subscribed to Irko's UA-cam. Thank you, Graham!
Outstanding interview! Very enjoyable, thanks for sharing.
Great video, I've been watching Irko's videos for a while! thanks for this interview Grayham.
amazing interview!!! the solo tip is a huge thing for me!
I've been following you for so long and I never really comment but I really lived this video 🔥🔥🔥🙏
So there's an Italian guy who has worked for Jay-z and Kanye among the others and I didn't even know him... but to be honest that's a great discovery, it gives me some hope!
This was awesome. A wealth of knowledge here man. Thanks for the upload. (y)
love what you do bro! great interviews and insight! peace man
Nothin but love for the knowledge your giving us
Thank Guys IRKO had a lot of good points, the beauty is in the details.
That last tips was so great, thanks!
Bow ties & Hip Hop! School Uniforms & AC/DC.... Appreciate the interview, thx for the tips!
those guys are the best. thanks for the interview.
looooved it man it was so cool...just subscribed to irko
Great interview, I wish I could like this more than once.
I'm sure thousands of people would like to see a start to finish tutorial on the making of a hip hop track. There are plenty of tutorials here on youtube, but barely any sound half as good as professional mixes and are typically not from very credible teachers.
Thanks Graham
Great video, thanks for sharing! Such cool and humble guys! I'd really find it interesting watching you two mixing unusual genres. Irko Rock and Graham Hip Hop. I guess the overal approaches/strategies would surely be a benefit for all of us. Including Irko and Graham (without wanting to offend you) :-)
Good to hear that all of us are a little insecure about mixing 😅
Everything Irko did and does i was and am doing !! But i didn't know that was normal and that professional engineers do that too !! I thought i was just on my amateur shit.. I guess i'm actually nice when you look at the fact i'm self-taught without any help from no one.. Great minds think alike. This video made me proud of myself. :)
You've watched plenty of these videos, so you've had help the whole time..no one does everything alone.
@@225maine Actually i didn't ! I wasted like two years playing around and tweaking everything, listening to details.. The Presets from the stock plugins were the only help i had ! Back then we had to use our brains and ears, we didn't had these videos and weren't used to looking for every fucking thing on the web like today..
DeluxMusic okay well you hear now lmao just like the rest of us
Great interview, loved all the insights and tips.
The chair noise was starting to get to me though.. :P
great interview. i wanna thank you so much for this lesson. wish i can pay u back cos i have learnt alot from u. am an artist in Nigeria and i produce my own stuffs plus others. and i have been thinking of how to spend so much mixing my whole songs in my upcoming album. but by the time i started following u, i realised dat i dont need to spend dat money anymore in mixin bcos rite now my mix sound close but not there yet but close and i believe with more hard work with will sound like them other mixes out there. thanks so much
Awesome video! Watched this and immediately subscribed to Irko. Realy hoping that you guys will do that hip hop mixing collaboration. Keep it up Graham and greetings from Finland!
someone else who still references Dre 2001 :D
"The Watcher" and "Big Egos" are my favorite references :)
Great interview Graham :) Thanks!
this is a dope interview! I'm brand new to mixing and this helps !
Very useful insight. two great individuals
Graham, you still in Tampa? Man I’ve been following you and your growth for years now and never knew. I’m in St. Petersburg and would be honored to meet you man.
Thank you ! Keep the tips and videos lit man !!
I agree with what he said about recording. I actually think recoding is THE most important part.

Amazing interview!! Great job
I really enjoyed it! genuine guy!
Big Thoughts
Nice chin.
Love Irko so humble cool and talented.
Great interview! Thanks Graham!
it's who you know folks, or who'll give you a chance. you're welcome
great interview, thanks for the time and effort put in.
Wow this content is amazing! Such a cool guy too! Thanks for sharing :)
Fantastic video
Very helpful and what a cool guy
Thank you Irko and Graham !
This guy is just inspiration!
thank you very much...that solo button is my savior for today..!
20:30; I just did this today using splice.com. I sent a mix I was working on to my friend but my friend preferred the version saved from November. So we reverted to that session with no problems, while also not losing what I just worked on!
Dang, I thought he would be interviewing somebody who mixes Hip Hop! Still a great interview.
wow he's really humble. thanks
Fantastic insights, thank you as always.
I see these chairs used in most studios. Whats the brand and name of them?
Etalon Beats I've noticed that too. If you find out get back to me
They are Aeron chairs. I have one in my studio and they are perfect for long hours of sitting.

Great Video!!! I like watchin' this stuff!!!
Thank you! you are great guy and I like your videos! :)
Dude this is an awesome video
Hey Gram. Love your videos. I have been subscribed your channel since 2013. Can you please tell me in what page or community on fb you met Irko? I have been try to be apart of the producer, sound engineer community on fb. Or if you have any other web pages, I would really appreciated it! Thanks! :)
He's so cool! Already subscribed!
thanx alot for all the advice.. very very helpfull...
Irko feels like he's your childhood friend- such cool guy! Lack of anglosaxon phoniness and pretentious 'acting'. As an artist i tell you, the rich art history (renaissance and all) of the our european psyche somehow translates into an intense sensibility in whatever area we are involved with! Cheers
hallobaaaby You don't sound pretentious at all right now
yeah i know but these are the facts :P
I agree Chronic 2001 might be the best mix/master in Hip Hop, WAYYY ahead of it's time.
A VAST REDUCTION OF CERTAIN ENTERTAINMENT WORLDWIDE
Watching this after a full day of mixing hip hop recorded in my living room. You guys are great, should do a podcast.
Holy Duck yea Dr Dre 2001, is the hottest thing man, Dr Dre is the Goat of pumping it. :D
My guy Irko! Really Cool Dude!
I don't think you can avoid the Solo button as long as you are the one who is doing the composing, recording and mixing yourself. At some point you have to hear the instrument, for example, if you are making a Guitar tone. Or to hear if something does not sound right from the composition point of view. Before getting fully to the Mixing Phase, I believe you also have intermediate Mixes in which you are mostly trying to get the best sound that you can from what you have. If there is a way to minimize the time spent in this phases, I will be very interested.
Warren Huart tracked in there on his channel. I have the multi tracks. That room is amazing sounding
Great video graham! I live in Largo, FL would love to grab lunch with you sometime!
Graham dressed like Irko for this lol
This guy has the best room acoustics in the game
Inspiring stuff. Thank you!
Man I really like this guy!!
