    Apple hasn’t shipped an iPhone Fold… yet. There’s no flipping Google Pixel phone yet either. But Samsung has just hit deadly number 4 - Galaxies Flip and Fold the next, next, next generation.
    So, why? What does Samsung know - and other companies that refuse to sell their folders any place I can buy them - what do they know that Apple and Google don’t? Or vice versa?
    Are flips and folds… the next big… bigger… smaller to bigger… Samsung thing? Or still just… extremely expensive… excessively compromised tech nerd thirst-traps - that’ll be superseded by glasses or whatever - before Apple and Google even begin?

    Samsung is so convinced that foldable displays is the next big thing because they have invested so heavily in the display technology. they need it to pan out so they can sell gobs of foldable displays to apple and google.
    Even if apple had a foldable phone... I would stick with the regular sized non-foldable phone. for the same reason I don't buy the MAX. I don't need more display and the price isn't worth it to me. also, I don't see the value in making the phone fold. my phone fits in my pocket as is.

    I still feel like folding itself isn’t enough of a feature to make it worth it. I think it’s a question of what folding would allow you to do that you couldn’t do without the fold. Otherwise, folding is just a gimmick.

      When smartphones was called cellphones and folded phones were called flip phones. Some of my ex colleagues would constantly flip their phones from shear boredom or to play with it. As though it’s a butterfly knife and it’s always going to make some feel like they are part of the crew of Enterprise.
      Technology needs to solve and resolve issue’s, making life better and easy.
      However it’s additional work, more steps to unlock it, folding flipping seems twisted. Why do more work unless it’s for working. Might as well get a light or ultralight laptop, hello MacBook Air m1, m2, eventually m3.

    • @aawendt
      @aawendt Рік тому +6

      @@DBE008 I see your point, but feel like we might be talking about different things. I'm not interested in an gimmick or flip for flip's sake boredom - you can literally have so much screen real estate that I can do or monitor 3-4 things at once. I can fold it in half and watch UA-cam TV, have my text thread open for my wife, and also on the bottom have Nest open to see my baby in the crib - all while bent at an angle on my desk or kitchen table. You could totally just grab a Chromebook or M1 Air those are great. But instead of finding so many reasons to think these are silly nonsensical items I applaud Samsung to having the stones to release these and push the bar higher and higher. If we all waited for Apple to set trends in the world we'd be in for a long journey. I'm not pushing anything on anyone. When I read a lot of these comments on this thread I immediately get the sense that most people just haven't used one for an hour or so to even experience it.

    Failure. If I want a bigger screen I use my tablet.
    I don't need my phone to be half the size but twice as thick in my pocket.
    It fits in all my pockets as it is. Nothing is so important that it can not wait until I take my iPad out my bag or I get home.
    I could probably spend less money on an iPad AND an iPhone (or whatever any individuals preferences are) than on a flip phone.
    I am a child of the 70s, and grew up through the whole communication revolution from the portable brick that was the first "mobile" phone to today, and I remember the flip phones from back in the day. I had one for less than a day as it was awful. To make a call I had to 'open' my phone instead of just using the phone, and like laptops, any kind of debris between the screen and the other half leads to disaster.
    I could go on, but I don't want to waste anymore brain cells thinking about it.
    So for me 100% a failure. Pointless and expensive.

    Foldables are trash. You can always see that line down the middle. They are going to break way more. IF Apple ever does a foldable it will be when they aren't compromised. And I agree with Apple no point of shipping one. Foldables are just for tech nerds, not mainstream public and I don't think they ever will regardless of how durable they become. Screens have settled into the max usable sizes and no reason to make them bigger. Tablets folding maybe.... but lets face it no one wants a thick brick so I doubt they ever catch on there either.

  • @iseewood
    @iseewood Рік тому +1

    I’ve played with the foldable phones, but the tactile feel is just too unpleasant. The screen feels like your swiping on plastic, moving your finger over the crease is disconcerting and the crease is visually unpleasant distorting reflected light. In addition, the flipping motion feels too stiff and unnatural and the folded phone is ridiculously thick, like shoving two iPhone Mini’s stacked on top of each other into your pocket. There is just something about moving your finger across a rigid panel of glass and it is visually superior. I just don’t think flip devices are “there”, yet, and I’m not sure if physics will ever allow them to be.

    As someone who's had many phones (including the Fold 3 for a year), I just smile at these videos. It's not for everyone for sure, but until you'd give yourself a few days to spend time with one and see just how different the experience is it's easy to say their "half-baked" and pointless. When I go back to my Pixel 6 (because I love that experience too), within an hour I'm already annoyed because I can't do so many things I'm used to doing with the Fold. Everyone's use case is different, but these are incredibly ambitious devices that give you possibilities that don't exist with anything else in the world. And as far as the price point, when I bought my wife a maxed out iPhone 13 Pro with Apple Care it was $1,700. So let's not pretend it's such a massive gap. A lot of tech is very expensive. But these are all tools and worth every penny to me. And you definitely get what you pay for.

      I had a month with the Flip3 and sold it, as it wasn't for me. A gimmick more than anything that became irritating for the 100X's a day I had to open and close it. Looking at eBay, its value has plummeted, and secondhand is selling for around £300, when at new £950 (Flip4 now £1000).
      It is niche and appeals to specific demographics. It has a place but indeed will not become the de facto number one form factor due to price and compromises. At £1000, I can get far more bang for my buck than the Flip4. The Fold4 is ludicrously priced; I can get an iPhone 13 Pro and iPad Pro M1for the exact cost and would be far happier!

      The data shows the average smartphone is kept for 2.5-2.6 years; it has never been over 3 years (closest in 2019 at 2.96). Being the exception to the rule, more than double it, and screaming iPhone FTW while never even touching one of these is not data of any type. No device is made with the intent to last that long (you really think Apple wants you to only upgrade every 5-7 years rather than 2-3?); happening to is a side benefit.
      Someone who kept an Iphone 6 for 7 years is not the target audience either.

      If you watch Austin Evans, who can be called the evangelist of the Z Flip phone, you’ll find that with foldables, the screens don’t last a year with his level of use. He’s had screen problems with every phone he’s had and is currently debating whether to replace his screen for the third time on his Z Flip 3. One month after he last replaced the screen, the new one started bubbling up. He found that the built-in screen protector had separated from the screen. But he had to peel it off to get rid of the bubble. Now his screen is unprotected. With that kind of history, lasting three years is dubious. Granted he’s one person, but that’s a lot of screen problems on multiple foldables.

Folding is neat, but it's not $1800 neat. The advances in technology required to implement it well will be expensive to gain so prices may be high for a while.

    Foldables are an attempt to revitalise a stale and increasingly redundant product category: the phone. Imo, the current best way of everyday computing and communication is a variation of the tablet, be it “phone sized” or larger.
    Phones should be phased out and essentially be replaced by tablets as a main communicator, with other tools like watches and glasses as the more mobile accessories for quick access to the most essential features.
    Foldables could have a place in that tablet space, just how convertibles have a space in the car market. It won’t be the new standard, I think. I think the wearables will become the more important part of the current ecosystems, be it through watches, glasses, gloves, clothing, or what have you. Maybe the new Matter standard could be expanded from just the home to other accessories that you take on-the-go.

      I don't think we will every reach a point where one device can do it all, mainly because of the contradicting needs based on what you are doing. With a phone you want a small device you can easily carry, but with applications like word processing and spreadsheets you want a large screen. Then when you want to watch a movie you want an even-larger screen.
      What I can see happening is having multiple devices that talk to each other. Each device is right for its use but it can share data with others. My understanding is that is what Apple devices currently have.

      I don't consider a foldable phone to be the same as a flip phone. Instead, I classify it as it own type of phone, occupying a space between the traditional flip phone and the smartphone.
      For me, one of the most important features of a traditional flip phone are the physical keys which I find more accurate to type on than typing with a virtual keyboard. Although I can type fast on a virtual keyboard I tend to regularly make mistakes because of the small size of the keys (As an example, I often hit the C, V, and B when I intended to hit the space bar). Then I have to backspace several letters to make corrections (trying to tap the screen to get back to the incorrect letter[s] takes even longer).
      While typing with the 12-button keypad is a little slower I rarely make mistakes and the ones I do make I can immediately correct. Plus, with practice I've gotten faster typing with it. This is one of the major reasons I went back to a traditional flip phone from my smartphone.

    Because Samsung is early, it doesn’t make them wrong. And it’s not just Samsung, there’s plenty of Chinese companies making them too. Google will be in the race by 2023. And you better believe Apple has foldable prototypes. But I can’t help but view this as a fanboys rant about something his favorite company doesn’t make yet. And there aren’t many compromises, these 4th gen foldables are highly capable devices. I use an iPhone for family, iMessage FaceTime etc, out of necessity and ease of use for keeping in touch, but my business phone is a Galaxy Fold. And better believe that phone is in my hand a lot more than the iPhone.

    I bought an iPhone 13 mini because I spend a lot of time running and a small and light phone is ideal because you don't want a big phone banging against your leg or hip while you are running and you don't want imbalance with your running. There are some shorts with pockets in the center of your back and that's balanced but it's hard to take out quickly if you want to switch from podcasts to music or take a call. One thing about the new Samsung phones are that they are relatively heavy for the size. Unfortunately Apple discontinued the iPhone mini so I will just use my 13 for the next couple of years until they bring it back. If I need a larger screen, there's my iPad mini.
