I'm planning to go in August too. It takes 3 hours just to get to the center of town. However, it takes half a day to get to Gassan Shrine, so it's not possible to do it as a day trip. The bus schedule will change during the summer holidays in August.

山越えだし、運転はお気をつけて。
軽米町の中は、徒歩で大丈夫です。少し離れた研磨ショウヨ出会いの場が商店街から15〜20分離れたくらい。神社や居酒屋に行かないで軽米町の中だけなら3時間あれば回れます。もち、人により滞在時間違うと思いますが。
