The Alchemy of Writing

  • The wellspring of consciousness has long been located in word. Once words were etched on clay or inked on papyrus, a new way of knowing was born. Writing ordered and expanded language, captured ideas, bloomed imagination, and preserved human experience.
Writing is an encounter like no other with oneself and inner others, light and dark. Whether we meet the page in a personal journal or as professional necessity, we discover that ego alone does not do this job. Some days words leap like dolphins; other days find us becalmed on a flat sea. To create through writing is to encounter self and depths, and Lisa shares experiences of writing her forthcoming book, Motherhood: Facing and Finding Yourself. Her words for the creative and challenging process of mothering map a path to soul and greater wholeness.
    HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
"I was attending a house party, and I was in the kitchen. I was wearing a skirt and all of a sudden I realized I had pooped without realizing it and the poop was on the floor of the kitchen. It was like a long light beige dinner roll in size and shape, and there were large batteries in the poop. I quickly picked it up, hoping no one saw me and turned to put it in the toilet, but there was someone in the bathroom, so I wrapped the poop in a yellow garbage bag and dropped it in the garbage can. At some other point in the dream, I had to collect many things I had strewn about in the home because I had to leave to make a train journey. I often have elements of my dream where I'm hustling to get somewhere to be on time for a leaving train or bus, but I can't find my belongings. At another point I was in a van with many people driving along a bumpy dirt road. For the majority of the dream, I was surrounded by people but feeling alone."

I understand from an expressive arts course introducing us to "bilateral stimulation" of the brain which occurs when arms are moved in circular fashion why I have so many insightful thoughts regarding my psychic life while swimming!

Thank you so much for this episode. It may sound silly, but every time I have to write an essay as a Film Studies student I feel like I’m doing something incredibly meaningful for myself. Somehow through analysing films I end up analysing myself. Writing is such a wonderful form of expression.

Amazing guys! Just a quick suggestion, perhaps you can include in the description box the main references that were meantioned. Such as "the art of the letter" etc.
Sometimes it's difficult to go back throughout the conversation and find the references and look them up etc would just make things easier....
    Anyway thanks!

Such honesty about creating anything. We gather up things we know. Its gathering up the crumbs and bringing fragments together and weaving them together into a new and often times beautiful new form. From chaos to new forms.

Such a great episode, I love how the three of you have this mutual respect where you never cut each other off, it's something that is very refreshing to listen to and has much to be learned from!

OK Lisa, I'll test your hypothesis! I want to remember my dreams, but am not very successful. However, I will write down any impression that presents in the morning. Now I'll get more proactive, set my intention at bed, maybe even draw an "invitation" to my unconscious to pay a visit. AND, when I wake up, I'll just start writing, and have faith!

    Fishing For Words
What is it that wants to be known?
    That lives in subterranean waters,
seeking the net that captures letters and
    resurrects them to the surface,
like exotic fish to be displayed
    in the marketplace of mind
    needing to create meaning.
    What is this endeavor
    to dance with an alphabet
    only to stumble and trip
    in awkward steps of inadequacy?
    This longing to discover
    some fresh articulated life,
that now is a maze of the undefined
    gestating in vulnerable territory
waiting to birth an unknown mystery.
Perhaps with the alchemy of devotion,
and surrender to that which serves,
some light will emerge from words,
which of course can only hint
    of the wondrous.

Thank you for the explicit notation that psychological growth is not contingent upon having children!

In Spain thrash cans (and bags) are color coded. Yellow bags are used to place plastic containers, bottles, and cans that can be recycled. If it were my dream I'd wonder if I'm asked to recycle something or if I'm ingesting plastic without knowing it.

Motherhood never dies. We are always some kinds of mother. Mostly we nurture others with a natures. Even when our own children mature we then turn our faces to other connections.

Joseph's description of digestion rings my bells in a major way! Food -- REAL FOOD -- is a major priority in my daily life! It's what becomes me!
