  • Either make your own, or buy a good one.
    It might be expensive, or take time to make - but you don't need much!
    Especially if using trays with small cells such as the ones I designed containerwise....
    A good potting compost gets the season underway.

    Thank you Charles for reminding in doing the sprouting test! Last season I ruined most of my peppers by planting in a bad bought potting soil

      @@CharlesDowding1nodig thank you, it looks really better this year.
      After this experience I had a really close eye for all sacks of soil I bought 🧐😅

    What luck! I have a rainy week ahead and I was going to start making potting soil. I’m getting better at this from watching your videos

    Worm castings are better than just compost. On its own or mixed.

      Maybe a mix of Worm castings with vermiculite?

      Yes I value them so much and even 10% makes a huge difference to growth

    I’m sure I’ve seen this video before. I’ve got some really good seed compost from the horticulture society. My living room
    Is turning into a potting shed again full of propergaters, grow lights boxes of seeds and compost! X

      Wonderful Lucy and you are right, a few of the shorts we make from existing longs, so a few people will see them twice, but from what I can see, we mostly reach a different audience

      @CharlesDowding1nodig yes you do, I no longer have time to watch full videos from my favourites channels, so this sort of shorts are amazing, thank you for all the amazing content ❤

    Some of it is crazy expensive!

      Exactly. I daresay a lot of us home growers including myself) do this as a hobby to subsidise the weekly shop. There's no point saving £20 per week if we just spend that on compost!

    My chickens' run has hard woodchip on the floor. I've sieved some of the fine material that collects under the woodchip and tried using that as potting mix - it seemed to work well but germinated some unwanted seeds that my chickens had likely missed from their feed. In theory, would you expect this material to be too rich or immature to work well?

      Lovely job Isla and probably a nice combo of rich + fresh = balance!

    Do you had any fertilizer to your pots for seedlings to germinate in?

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  5 місяців тому

      No, but the compost has plenty of nutrients, and that is good for seed sowing, despite what you may hear!

    Hi Charles, i would like to try the moorland gold after this years seedlings looking very pale on current compost. Do you use the multipurpose, container or seedling compost for your module trays. Cheers!

      Hi, nice and I use the multipurpose, also called container and module compost, has some river deposits which are not peat :)

    13 quid a bag?!

      @CharlesDowding1nodig  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes and worth it for increased crops ultimately, no wasted sowings, use less with small module cells etc

    So many makes of peat free compost are no good at all. Never had so much trouble trying to get seeds going, and if they do grow they are yellow and poorly rooted.
